So I took this today while waiting to finish up some paper work at my university in Houston. I'm not completely read on the new chl rules but how can have the area be restricted for only certain times?

Really need more context. What the facility used used for is important.

If you look at the list of prohibited places, and compare to what you know, that may answer your question. As an example, an arena is okay until a meeting of a Governmental entity is taking place, then it is not.

Simple. There are certain times they don't want people there carrying concealed firearms. NOTHING in the law says restricting access must be permanent.

With that said, I don't believe that is a legal sign.

^^^^^^^^^ Correct.

With respect to the sign, the wording is correct, but we don't know if the lettering meets the legal standard for height (at least 1" high), also for the sign to be legally binding it must be displayed in BOTH English and Spanish.

Note: The lack of a 30.07 sign (Open Carry) suggests it would be O.K. to carry openly, but I suspect the person(s) who posted the 30.06 sign simply don't know that (yet). Lots of misinformation circulating among businesses.

There's no way it's legal. That's a piece of 8.5x11 paper. I don't tell people they have a non-compliant sign. I just ignore them.

Guys this is the University of Houston- Downtown and they are campus wide. This sign is on every door and from what I can see they put a new one on everyday.

They can post non-compliant signs until the cows come home and do it on every door, window, and whiteboard, but that doesn't mean they carry the force of law
There's no way it's legal.

LOL, I was trying to be funny. As flint pointed out, so much is wrong with the sign that it is laughable.

.

Compounding the confusion at UH, I was at Houston's Hobby Airport this morning and saw numerous signs warning "NO UNREGISTERED FIRARMS BEYOND THIS POINT". Or something close to that, in large letters but in language definitely not up to the standard required in Texas to be a legal warning. It was strange for a such large airport.

Not to mention we're not required to register firearms in Texas. Sounds like some loony liberal was involved in mental masturbation.

The ONLY thing that is wrong with this signage is that it isn't also repeated in Spanish. Otherwise, yes...it does carry the weight of the law. I mean I guess if you're afraid of a class C misdemeanor and a $200 fine anyway.

Nope. It's on a piece of 8x11.5 paper. There's no way to get the warning in English in 1" letters on a piece of paper that size.

They have 10 lines of text on that "sign" plus a gun buster...and it doesn't even use the full piece of paper.

I guess I'll grab one next time and measure it out. I just have never seen some junk like this pulled. And soonermedic I don't care about the charges as much as getting expelled. This place tried to formally punish me for throwing away an Antigun button some students were passing out and called the cops on some other student vets who were handing out counter info. The Admin in the school just hate guns we've even had some professors quit because of the carry law.

SoonerMedic, the Texas law is really specific for both 30.06 and 30.07 signs, in practice they wind up being 20" x 30" for the required 1" font size (72 point). And, they are required in both English and Spanish and adjacent, one to the other, and by type, The law also stipulates "conspicuous" posting, so you can't just pick a random door or entry and call it good.

There are no pending cases to my knowledge, but the Attorney General's office has a few dozen requests for clarification.

Until we hear from the AG, non-compliant signs might as well insist the world is flat and the moon made of green cheese, and treated accordingly.

1. As pointed out, that's not the only thing wrong with it
2. Even if that really were the only thing wrong with it, it wouldn't carry the weight of law because if there's ANYTHING wrong with it is non-compliant and doesn't carry the weight of law.

Ok regardless of the legalities of it all, why not just respect the wishes of whomever is renting, leasing or whomever owns the building and not carry inside?

How would I know their wishes? For all I know, they are intentionally posting non-compliant signs to keep everyone happy. The anti-gunners are happy to see the signs and the pro-gunners are happy that the signs carry no weight of law.

I've actually talked to one business owner who puts up non-compliant no guns signs with exactly that kind of intent.
