I want to buy single rounds of various calibers for a collection. I do not want to buy 50 rounds of 50 cal bmg. I just want 1 or 2 max. Same with S&W 500 magnum ammo etc etc. I just want 1 round of each.

Is this possible? I mean someone has to do this somewhere. Buying boxes of ammo to have 1 round in a glass case is a little ridiculous

You'll often find boxes of random live rounds and dummy rounds for sale at gun shows. People also do sometimes sell cartridge collections (be prepared to pony up significant bucks for anything remotely inclusive). Other than that, you're pretty much left with friends who have one they'll give you or buying quantities.

I cannot help you with that inquiry today. Had you been in San Francisco back in the 1960s and 1970s, The San Francisco Gun Exchange, Nate Posner Proprietor, had a vast collection of handgun and rifle cartridges for sale individually for collectors. That was my only source for .44 Russian cartridges for my old Smith and Wesson DA top break.

Pity. I'm not even looking for old exotic calibers. I'm looking for modern ammo, 44 Magnun, 308 etc

If you use facebook you might try posting a wanted ad on local sales groups there as well. You could probably reach more people that way than any other way.

I've seen individual BMG rounds for sale at a LGS. Old surplus stuff. Mainly as a novelty I guess. I don't recall ever seing anything else though.

How about posting a want-to-buy ad in the Classifieds?

I was thinking of you making a list of what you want (with an explanation) and posting it at the range. Cross off the ones that you get. Don't suggest that you'll pay, let them bring it up if they want to. Most common cartridges will probably be for free.

I know it's annoying that I have two rounds left over when I shoot a box of 50 for my 6-shooter. And now I got a 7-shooter which is even more annoying.... one left over. Grrr.

They ought to make a 7.071-shooter.

WTB ads, gun shows, cartridge collector shows, internet sales, are all ways to find/buy individual cartridges, but be prepared for shipping costs of $15 or so. You can only send live ammo via UPS or Fedex.
A good place to hunt for collectors near you would be:

Others might say buying 1 round to have in a glass case is a little ridiculous :)

Another source might be a forensic ammunition supply company. They have vast quantities of ammunition available for order by forensic laboratories for comparison with bullets & cases found at crime scenes. Expect to pay dearly for your purchases, though.

That actually makes it more difficult. I recently purchased single .44 Henry and .56-56 Spencer cartridges from a rare ammo dealer. IIRC, cost was only $7 or $8 apiece.

Check with your local gun shop. Mine has a box under the counter with rounds that they took out of firearms that people brought in the store that were "unloaded". Ask nicely, and they'll probably hand you the ones you want.

Actually, rental might be the way to go.
Rent a gun in the caliber you desire, and a box of ammo.
Pocket the one or two examples you want and fire the rest--kind of a win/win, really.
Ok, you are still buying an entire box of ammo to get a round or two, but, you'd get to "enjoy" the rest of the box at least.

Well that would be fun to do but I cant afford it and I doubt anywhere in my area will rent out a 50 cal sniper rifle lol

Stores like the San Francisco Gun Exchange (now closed) used to have a glass case with bullets in it. You could buy one bullet for a collection. Oh, those days are long gone now.

Yes, there is a classified section here.
The Forum Folder in Marketplace, IIRC. Go to the Home button, then scroll right down to near the bottom.

Now, an option might be, rather than a WTB (Want To Buy) would be a WTS (Want To Sell) any partial boxes you collect.

Might be a slightly better market to sell, oh, 48 110gr JHP .375mag than buying just two. Could post it both ways, too.

The nice people at MTM (IIRC) make a cartridge display board. Which is slightly effort than taking a router to a display board and drilling tiny holes to pass brass wire around the rims of cartridges.

This example has not been maintained very well, and it's short nearly a whole 'nother board of variants I've shot. Does have some cool rounds in there, like the .30-06 Accelerator. I think I know where the missing revolver rounds are. But, where the .45 wadcutter went I haven't a clue.

I once had an extensive cartridge collection and I passed it down to my
grandson. It took me many years to put it together. I went to gun shows
as Mk4 shooter said, and bought single rounds there. I scrounged from
my buddies every time they would buy a new gun. After while you become
known as a cartridge collector and people come up to you and offer you
a cartridge. It helps to belong to a gun club where you have a lot of people to scrounge from.

Armslist for sure. I imagine between 5 enthusiasts you'd be able to cover a large base of commonly used rounds.

I have brass and ammo for guns I don't/no longer own. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I would speak with the manager at pawnshops, we end up with all kinds of random ammo. I would assume a gunshops/gunsmiths would also.....
