Marlin 22 Rifle, Model 39, Serial #4483

This gun was bought for my dad second hand by his dad, circa mid-twenties. What I read is confusing regarding the serial number date. One of the websites I found on line said it was 1883. Would appreciate input regarding serial number verification/history of this gun. Thanks.

No, your rifle wouldn't have been from 1883 since the Model 39 didn't go into production until 1922. Checking the serial number date for the Model 39 is difficult since there isn't a lot of info available on it. The Model 39A and others are easier.

With a number as low as yours is, it was probably manufactured in 1922 or 1923. You actually have a very valuable rifle there. Even if it is a "beater" it can still be worth over $1,000.

The subtract from 2000 only works on later production guns, not the early ones. Theres a good site dedicated to Marlin owners with alot of info but I can't find the link. Just google it. It'll be one of the first one. Nice rifle.

I have a Marlin 39 (from my late, honored Father) with a four digit serial number, beginning with a '2'. As far as I am able to determine, it was made the first year of production. So a '4,000' could be a first year, or at latest a second year.

The one I have goes to my grandson.

Just to muddy the water, that "serial number" looks odd. The "44" looks to be one font, heavily stamped, while the 8 and 3 are not aligned and appear to be of a different font, plus not nearly so heavily stamped. It looks almost like the tang might have been repaired at some time and the numbers re-stamped.

OP said it was purchased used in the mid twenties so the gun would have been "almost new" at that time. Do you suppose it may have gotten stamped at different locations on the assembly line? It appears to be hand stamped and maybe some of the stamps were worn and replaced with a slightly differently font? If it's been in the family for almost 100 years does the OP know if any mods or repairs have ever been done to it? I would bet my money that it came from the factory that way.

My Dad got this gun when he was 10 years old from his Dad, around 1923. He was not a serious hunter, and I don't believe he ever shot the gun much. We moved to town in 1950 and it was stored in a cupboard. I know it was never shot after that. Thanks for your input.
