I took a few snaps of my new RPR before I take it out shooting and ding it all up ;-)

Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor
American Defense Recon Scope Mount
Burris XTR II 5X25X50
Vortex Optics Bubble Level
Harris Engineering S-BRM Hinged Base 6 - 9-Inch BiPod
S-Lock for Harris Bipod

Going to keep this pup bone stock, just as the designers at Ruger intended, at least for a while. Now I need to order some ammo, a drag bag and get this thing out to the range and sighted in.

Great pics and great rifle. Ive been going between a build and this rifle, hard to beat that price. Keep us posted on how it shoots.

Ps. what camera gear you using? looks like more than an iPhone ;-)

:)I'm not exactly an AR platform guy. Never owned one but most of my buds do.
Have shot plenty of them, just not my cup of tea.

I am a HUGE Ruger fan though! Can't go wrong with a Ruger!
If I were going to get one, I would definitely start looking at Ruger first!

Congrats on the pick up and very nice pictures!

Capybara, that is one sweet rifle. What made you pick the Creedmoor? Don't get me wrong on this. I have a 6.5 as well and if I ever get a Ruger Precision, 6.5 creedmoor would also be my choice. Just wondering your thought process. I got a Savage LRP to cure my itch. Yours is top notch. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thanks all.

Robb - Canon 80D, not an expensive camera, Canon EF-S 17.55 2.8 IS for the wides, Canon EF 70-200 2.8 USM IS II for the tighter stuff. Lit with two ancient, Nikon strobes, SB-26 and an SB-800 using PocketWizard Xs (the cheap ones), Small Chimera with a 40 degree egg crate overhead and a smaller, 24x24" Lastolite softbox right below the camera lens. This setup used a boatload of C-stands and sandbags though, had to black out some windows with the black Duvetine as well as make the background. I really need some strip light boxes for a rifle this long but I don't photograph a lot of rifles these days, mostly portraits. I didn't even clean the rifle, this is fresh out of the box, you can see the milling oil stains on the receiver halves ;-)

Thanks Big7 and Browning Guy, looking forward to getting the ammo and a drag bag so I can actually shoot this thing!

dh1633PM, I chose 6.5 Creedmoor simply because of the BCs, they are far superior to anything else in it's class. I figure if I want to learn how to shoot at 1,000 to 1,200 yards, why not start with a caliber that has the best BCs? If I didn't reload, I would have probably bought .308 simply because of ammo cost but luckily I do reload so I am looking forward to load development for this rifle and hopefully a new facet of shooting for me. I live in California so ARs and AKs are being made so inconvenient and neutered, I am looking for a new direction. We have approximately three years, then the antis will come after this rifle because "Nobody NEEDs a deadly, long distance sniper rifle". When that happens, I will move it out of state, soon to be followed by me.

Thanks Bannockburn!

They might, California is tough on gun owners.

The Ruger Precision Rifle is a nice looking and very interesting rifle.

It is, it caught my eye a couple of years ago when they introduced it. I always wanted a precision rifle but the price tag always held me back. Have a guy near here who builds killer custom rifles but they start at $5k.

Nice rig. I've got one in 6.5 also. Vortex 6-24 PST scope and Atlas bipod. Mine's a Gen 1 and did not come with the muzzle brake. I added a Lil Bastard brake. I've got the same level on the scope as well. Really handy to being able to see you aren't canting the rifle.

Nice pics... Every now and then I get a good shot. I'm dealing with a T3i though, so you calling your camera not expensive is irrelevant! (I'm just a minor hobbyist, I enjoy doing it, but I'm not particularly good at it, so I don't spend much on equipment)

I think something we say often as gun owners is applicable to photography... Its not the gun , its the shooter ;)

So, to compliment a future post with a picture, we want a photograph composed with the rifle, at least part of it, and a target with a 5-shot group, plus ammunition data as the subject. :)

Congrats on a good looking setup, I have a Gen 1 in 6.5 with a SWFA SS 3-15 on top. It's a really fun rifle to shoot at our local long range. It may not matter to some, but I really like being able to run regular PMags in my RPR, feeding is always flawless. Your post reminds me, I have 85 primed brass that need powder and bullets before the match this weekend!

Thanks for the response Capybara. About the same for me since I live in New York and had to get rid of my DPMS Heavy Barrel 308. I went with the Savage due to availability. When I got it, it was available and the Ruger was not. Nice rifle. Enjoy it.

I picked up a first generation model back in August and opened a thread on it:
https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...n-rile-308-it-can-shoot.808625/#post-10334125

These guns can shoot! I went with .308 simply because 300 yards is the maximum at our club and I couldn't really justify another caliber. Can push things out to ~500 yards at my friends ranch, but we are waiting in line for a bulldozer rental to clear sight lines and make backstops, we've had so much rain that it was too wet to rent the first one that came available (we only need it for one day so he is trying to fit us in when one comes in between longer jobs).

Mauser lover, FWIW, I too have a T3i sitting around and I can almost guarantee that if I slipped the tripod plate and same lenses off of the 80D and substituted the T3i, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in the images. Lighting and glass, digital camera bodies are disposable.

Yeah, pretty much. Apparently (as in, I got this from the rumor mill) Canon uses at least two operating systems with minor variations throughout their models. So... With a minor software hack the hardware should be able to do a bit more... Actually, one of the guys I know has a t3i with a different OS and a bunch of nonstandard options for settings, etc. I (we) had a friend do our wedding photography, and I got to play with her 7D (mark one) and (I think) 70-200 Luxury Canon lens during the reception. It was nice, but definitely out of my price range! With the amount of photography I do, I don't even have any dedicated lighting equipment! Sooo, I definitely don't need a 7D at this point.

To keep this firearm related... Can you take a time lapse of you shooting and walking back and forth to your target? Or maybe figure how to get a bullet just clear of your brake in perfect focus? :scrutiny:

Ha, ha, giving me photo challenges. I do actually shoot time lapse, that would be a fun challenge. Don't invest your money into newer cameras and fancy lenses (although I am a hypocrite because I have that fancy Canon 70-200 IS II and it is amazing) but I shoot video and TV docs professionally so it's all part of my work gear. Invest your money and more importantly your time and learn how to light like professionally. It's not hard but it takes some patience and you have to devote some time into it to get good. I am going to give you the best photo tip in the world. www.strobist.com Just go there and begin with Strobist 101. Best photo lighting website on the Internet. Anyone can light, they are just too lazy to. It cracks me up that people always thinks it's the camera/lens that makes good images when in reality, its always the lighting and to light takes a skilled photographer. That's the beauty of the Strobist method, you don't have to buy expensive, dedicated studio flashes, you can buy Chinese manual or older technology used strobes and they work great, if you understand how to use them.

Freezing bullets would be an interesting photo challenge, there are sound actuated flash tools, that's how they do it. You have to be in an almost pitch black room for it to work, hard to shoot off a real gun in a pitch black room although perhaps an outdoor range at night could work?

Great rig! I picked up mine this week too. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the Vortex Razor HD 5-20x I ordered also has a friggin' 35mm tube, so I ordered the wrong mount.

I also agree with your comments on photography.

I got the gen 1 chambered in .308, added a muzzle brake and a Leupold VX-6 4.5 x 20 x 40 and zeroed at 200 yards. I run cattle on 4 pastures and all are infested with feral hogs. I have taken several at 400 yards or more. It took a few bullets from 150 grain to 180 grain and actually best loads were Hornady factory loads in 150 grain. A good evening is sitting in my pickup or jeep overlooking hay fields or senderos with a cold beer....so many pigs, so little time.

Nice rig, how much did it set you back?

$1,399.00 for the RPR in 6.5 CM
$180.00 for the AD Recon Mount
$30.00 for the Vortex level
$1,200.00 for the Burris XTRII 5x25x50
$99.00 for the Harris Bipod
$30.00 for Harris S Lock

A little over $2,900.00 for what is shown here. Also, the ammo ain't cheap, I am getting 200 rounds of the Prime 130gr ammo as my brass base for reloading. Still have buy some bullets, will probably buy the Noslers or the Hornady ELD-X, I already scored four pounds of impossible to find H4350 but had to overpay at $29.00 per pound. No eight pounders around anywhere of the H4350.

Still need a drag bag too, that'll add another $100.00 to the tab.

Long range precision isn't a cheap sport but to me, this is more interesting than paying the same for an Ed Brown, or Les Baer low end 1911. If I decide this type of shooting isn't for me, I won't take a bath with this set up if I sell it.

Thanks! Let us know how she shoots when you get her to the range. Yup, those tube sizes are all over the map, 30, 34, 35mm, 1"

Are your hogs worth eating or too tough/gamey? I know your state has a hog epidemic, and that they are often more culled than hunted for food. Someone told me that it's all in how you butcher them as to whether or not the meat is good? I used to raise 4H pigs as a kid so eating any hogs I hunted would be interesting to me.
