I bought some tracers at a gunshow and forgot to ask if they were corrosive:banghead: Well the main reason I really want to know is because I'll be shootin it out of an AK. If it was a bolt action I just would shoot, clean and go on. Maybe yall could tell me. It is 7.62x39 has a green laquor ?(how to spell) coated case has the red seals around the bullet and it completely covers the primer. The only markings on the bottom of the case is 83 which I guess that means it was made in 1983. Any info on these is appreciated.:)

This is probably a dumb question, but did they come in a box? is there a company name on the box?

To eliminate any worries, I would simply assume they are and clean appropriately. What's 5 minutes of cleaning time?
Shoot the stuff and enjoy yourself!

Highly unlikely, yes, but definately possible. The "83" headstamp could be a factory code rather than a date stamp. Not knowing where this ammo came from, who made it, or when I would assume it was corrosive and clean accordingly. Better to spend some time cleaning than assume you're ok and have a ruined gun.

Your options are:

1. Shoot them and clean on the assumption they are corrosive.

2. Shoot them and take your chances.

3. Toss them in the trash.

It normally takes longer than 5 mins to clean the gas tube, piston, gas block, and carrier

Good catch; it seems I didn't read the post very thoroughly. Now I see that's for an auto chucker... make that 10 minutes extra cleaning time.

After finishing a case of berdan/corrosive Soviet ball I bought with my type 56 SKS in the mid 90's, I figure I should know by now. I doubt an AK variant will take much longer.

My original suggestion still stands. ;)
