Suggestions for a .22 host for suppressor

I prefer bolt actions, so I don't have to listen to that noisy semi bolt clattering back and forth

CZ 455 in 22LR. The suppressor ready model has a 16" barrel and is a lot of fun. Ruger Mark IV is also fun. Louder though.

Just get a Ruger 10-22, or one of the higher dollar clones. You will find you have tons of extra options to customize the rifle to your needs. Easy to find a threaded barrel if you don't thread the one that comes on the rifle.

Mine is very reliable, quiet and accurate with a suppressor.

The Ruger American rimfire is a bargain, and available with a threaded barrel from the factory. It uses 10/22 mags and has decent aftermarket support. I find I shoot it more often than my semi-autos when using a suppressor. The difference in sound level is very significant.

Savage MK II FV-SR, throw the tupperware stock away and buy a boyds laminate or composite. Take an hour or so and slick up the bolt and bolt race with some lapping compound, and it makes for a slick operating bolt. You should only have about $350 into it by that time.

I've heard good things about the Ruger American bolt as well, better magazines than the Savage.

The sights are tall so one could probably use the iron sights.

I have a PWS Summit and a Tactical Solutions AR-22 SBX. I'd like to get a 10-22 takedown and buy the TacSol SBX barrel for it as well.

CZ would be my pick.

I really like the Savage. Slapped mine in a Boyd's tacticool. It piles the Norma subsonic HP's into tiny groups.

I have had a 455 and several 452's. Never thought the trigger looked weird.

If you only have one gun, make it a bolt gun. The difference in noise from the shooter's perspective is significant as compared to a semi.

What kind of silencer are you getting? I'm assuming you want a .22 rifle, but I have a Savage 17 HMR that's a shooter. I also have a Savage 17 WSM which I haven't had to the range yet, but my AAC Element 2 is not rated for 17 WSM - have to use my Silencerco Sparrow which is rated for 17 WSM.

As others have stated, I guess you first need to decide if you want to go bolt or semi-auto if ultimate noise reduction is one of your priorities.

Here's a few I have in .22LR:
1. Savage Mark II FVSR - of course, with that flex at the front of the stock, I replaced with a Boyd's.
I got whatever they call the Tacticool these days (as pictured in post #12) - painted black finish - I don't particularly care for the stock finish as I think the laminate stocks they make with the clear coat finish have better grip. Last time I checked, the only laminate stocks they had for the FVSR were thumbhole stocks?

2. Savage Mark II BTVSS - a beauty, but had to get the barrel threaded by a local gunsmith. Told him I did not want the thread protector knurled - leave it plain to match the barrel. You can't tell when the thread protector is on the barrel - keeps the clean look of that SS barrel!

I never could get past the look of those funky banded sights on Rugers, but things are changing over there! Just bought my first 10/22, and some of the new models (with heavy barrels) have my interest.

3. Ruger 10/22 Takedown Heavy Barrel - one of my favorites - feels like a tight little gun - don't know how they attached the front of the stock, but it's tight with no movment (probably not free floated).
I have a Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot on this one, so it's not set up for ultimate accuracy.
The Ruger magazines get the nod over the Savage mags - appear to be better built, and I like the 10-rd. rotary magazine fitting completely inside the stock (looks better, less to snag).
It has a really nice case to boot - full Velcro inside so you can arrange the straps any way you wish.


4. Ruger American Rimfire Target - don't have this one yet, but since I now have money invested in their magazines after buying my first 10/22, I may end up with one in the future.
I assume the barrel is free floated, is already threaded, and I like heavy barrel rifles.

Of course, there's also something like the S&W 15-22 - I also enjoy shooting it when silenced.

Boyds makes a traditional styled laminate stock for the Mark II FVSR, it is what I have on mine. It is called their Rimfire hunter, and you have to order it with the bull channel. The only thing I had to do to mine was take a dowel rod and sand paper and clearance the channel a minor amount, it took me about 15 minutes of light sanding until i had the barrel completely free floated.

10/22 is a great choice as threaded barrel version are easy to find, and a replacement barrel is pretty cheap if you have an un- threaded one. A bolt action will be quieter, and you can use the slowest (quietest) ammo without worries.

For pistols the Walther P22 is a great size, although its not highly regarded as a .22lr pistol, it makes a really nice suppressor host, an the adapter for its threaded barrel is like $20.

I have a cz 455 threaded and a Ruger 10/22 with a threaded Kidd barrel. They both shoot about the same accuracy wise, but the cz goes to the range with me a lot more. You really need to be shooting standard velocity or subsonic, and since those are kind of spendy I appreciate the slower rate of fire of the cz.

Also, suppressed guns are super dirty, and the bolt gun stays cleaner.

Ryanxia, I am in the same boat as you. I have pretty much decided I'll need to get a bolt gun and a semi-auto. Right now I am leaning towards the Ruger American for ultra-quiet target work and tactical looking semi-auto (probably a S&W M&P .22) for fast follow up shots. But I am still wide open.

I like the tactical .22's for a couple reasons: (1) I can use my extra AR-15 gadgets and accessories on them, and (2) newbies like shooting them. For example, if I wanted to reduce the varmint population in a barn, I can add a red-dot and a light to the many rails. Alternatively, if I want to blow the mind of a New Yorker I can hand them an M&P .22 with a silencer, laser and Havoc launcher.

I hear good things about the Savage but my first firearm was a 10/22 and I had a couple of magazines kicking around so my first rifle host was a Ruger American Rimfire with a threaded barrel.

Later on I had my 10/22 barrel modified including threading the muzzle. Its not as quiet as the bolt gun but its fun to shoot.

A friend bought one of the 10/22 ultralights with the threaded barrel and a stock that is similar to the American. Its a nice rifle.

I am really leaning toward the CZ455 Tacticool. I am also curious about the Ruger American Rimfire Target model, but I don't know if they are in the wild yet. I really like how it uses 10/22 mags and is expected to be less expensive than the CZ. I am going to wait and see how the Ruger stacks up against the CZ after people get their hands on it. I was looking at the Savage, but multiple complaints from multiple sources concerning the magazine being of poor construction and resulting in feeding issues turned me off. I want my bolt .22 to be utterly reliable and accurate.

Ruger has been busy based on customer feedback - I like it!

I was only mildly interested in them until they started coming out with the heavy barrel models, and the new ones have the updated trigger, which can be bought and installed on old units.

I think all the teeth knashing in here over the 10/22 is based on old info / models - they've really caught my attention lately with all the changes going on there.

Got my first 10/22 a few months ago, and now it's one of my favorite plinkers.
I'm keeping the red dot on it - I can see a Rimfire Target Model in my future!?
I've got a spare Nikon scope available to slap on it - I may make it my "accuracy" gun.

I may be late to the party, but wanted to add two cents. The only silenced 22LR I have shot was a Ruger 10-22. While the shot was whisper quite, the bolt cycling was not. I would find a bolt gun if you want the ultimate quite rifle.

And I hope that Ruger eventually threads the new Mk IV pistols. They have threaded Mk IV 22/45 variants, but I'd really like to see the non 22/45 Mk IV heavy barrel versions threaded.
