DeSantis Mini Scabbard

Hi all,
I have a Colt Combat Commander and a Colt New Agent SA 45 acp.
I always carry condition 1 and use either a thumb snap belt holster, a Galco Miami Classic, or my DeSantis Mini Scabbard. I kind of like the DeSantis Mini Scabbard, but of course there is no thumb snap to put leather between the hammer and the firing pin. On the other hand, it is simplicity itself to draw or reholster the weapons. And yes..I'm aware that the design makes the pistol quite safe, with the grip safety as well as the frame mounted safety. Anyway, does anyone here carry in this style instead of a "possibly" safer thumb snap style holster? If so or if not, any thoughts on carrying condition 1 in an open topped holster like the DeSantis Mini Scabbard?

I carry condition 1 in open top holsters all the time; that said, the Mini Scabbard always seemed sort of 'floppy' to me, since it's not a design that pulls the gun in tightly to the body. I prefer either a pancake or Askins style, with at least two belt slots, but YMMV, of course.

I have both the Mini Scabbard and E-Gat Slide holsters for a couple of my carry guns. Retention is great with both holster designs as is concealability and comfort while wearing them.

I carry a 1911 Condition 1. I own no holsters with thumb breaks. All my holsters, except one, have plenty of retention for nearly every activity. Many thumb break users have commented their thumb breaks have disengaged their thumb safeties while being worn. Thumb breaks are probably a good idea for LE, open carriers, or wilderness activity, but for just about everything else, an open top holster is probably the best option.

I've never used one, but that would have been my guess.

There are lots of great options from, Milt Sparks, Kramer, Mitch Rosen, Alessi, Ritchie, Lobo Gun Leather, Tucker, Tauris, etc.

Are Galco Holsters for 1911s Designed to be Carried Cocked and Locked?
All Galco holsters with safety straps and thumb breaks are designed to carry 1911-style pistols with the "hammer down, chamber empty." Galco 1911 fit holsters that are "open top" (no safety strap and no thumb break) are designed to accommodate 1911's in all safe "conditions" specified by the firearm manufacturer.

I use one of these every day. Not with a 1911 but I don't use thumbreaks for those either. Actually, I hate them quite intently.

I carried a Gov't model 1911 in a DeSantis Speed Scabbard for about 3 years. I never had any problems. Granted, my life basically goes "home --> office --> home," so there very little running and jumping involved, but I never felt like my gun was about to fall out of my holster.

Hey Spats,
No running or jumping here either, though I did have a brand new Walther PPK/S fall out of a vertical suede shoulder holster and hit concrete as I bent over to empty fuel out of a small portable generator. No harm..no foul!

Spats..it did just that to me too. First I said Oh s**t, then Oh crap..and after just a second...Thank God! No ND, no huge explosion, no dead neighbors and no dead me! It tends to instill one with renewed caution in all things!
The Walther suffered no injuries either..tough pistol!

Spats, I've used Speed Scabbards without a thumb break with a variety of guns as a LEO since the 80s. It's become my favorite holster. Never lost a gun.

I think my Speed Scabbard was my first holster. I've moved on to different pistols and different holsters, but I it has served me well. In fact, I dusted it off yesterday to carry that 1911. If I were in need of an OWB leather holster right now, I'd grab one in a minute.

I recently bought one for my S&W Shield. It's a great holster for carrying OWB. Have used it almost everyday and would definitely buy another.
