Buck Selkirk

I think it is a good knife and I am a huge Buck fan. Please be advised though that the Selkirk is a model made in China unlike most of Buck's current line up. If you're good with that, then proceed.

@joneb I have one and I'm pleased with it. The fit and finish is very good and I feel that the quality is exceptional for the price. A knife is a very personal thing so when I tell you that the balance and feel suits me, remember that this is my opinion... ymmv. I live on 24 acres and I carry this knife the most. When I hunt or need something for off-property defense I go to a more utilitarian knife

PS - I looked at the ad you posted and it mentioned that the rear bolster can be use as an improvised hammer. I'd think twice about it if your life didn't depend on doing that..... Doc

For about the same price you can get a USA made Buck 622 Endeavor or 620 Reaper that have the same 420HC blade steel. If you're okay with carbon steel Buck offers the 104 Compadre in the same price range. If you're okay with a USA made Kershaw the Diskin Hunter is of similar price and size. None of those four are as pretty as the Selkirk, but all four are very rugged slab scale over full tang construction.

I pondered a Selkirk just a week or so ago. I put it in my cart but backed out. I went with the Vanguard. Similar blade shape but a bit shorter. I think the diamond wood grip on the Vanguard should last at least as long as the knife itself. My main reason for buying the Vanguard is "made in USA". I have a few other Bucks but I needed something to do mainly food prep while camping. The others are either too big or too small.

Does a bolster that is angled forward like that make it better to do detailed work? Like you can get your thumb directly over whatever you are whittling or working or whatever?

The Vanguard is attractive looking and would be fine for most uses. But it has a narrow rat tail tang so probably would not be a good choice for hard use.

Thank you for all the input, at haft the price of this,https://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Master-Hunter-Fixed/dp/B00U1I9V74 I'm trying to make a choice I won't regret.
Only cry once?

That Cold Steel is a pretty nice knife, and CPM-3V is a great steel. But, those rubber handles aren't as hard durable synthetic or stabilized wood slabs bolted or riveted to a full tang. Soft rubber is also notorious for having too much grip on bare hands and causing hot spots or blisters during hard use. Now that you're up a $100 budget you can a Becker, Ontario RAT, Ontario Blackbird, ESEE, or Tops fixed blade. It really depends on what you want the knife to do.

I was torn between this https://www.amazon.com/Ontario-Black-Bird-Knife-Sheath/dp/B005LW4J04 or this

I'm going to try the latter.

Cool. I don'y know anything about Cudemon knives, but that one looks nice. N695 is Bohler's name for 440C, so it should be a good to go if Cudemon does the heat treat right. I'll be interested to see what you think of it once you get it and test it out.

Well this knife appears to be a good a deal. I am impressed with the build of the the knife and sheath. I do feel that the steel has been properly heated it just sounds right.
I am not sure that I will keep it or gift it, I remembered my son has a birthday coming up.
I'm thinking this may be more to my liking http://cudeman.com/en/knives/432-sku-138-ls.html not sure if it can be easily found.

well I gifted the Cudeman MT-5.
I ended up with the Cold Steel Master Hunter in CPM 3V, this a nice blade. I would prefer a exposed tang though.
The micarta grip on the MT-5 was a bit slick for me, I live in a dry climate and my hands are dry and calloused so the rubber grips do not bother me.
