I've been looking at Colt, Stag and Armalite for an 18" AR to work as a plinker, but also as something I can stick a scope on and reach out between 150 and 250 yards.

Everything seems to be 14.5" - 16" carbine (or mid)........not a lot out there for an 18" or even 20". I don't know much about Armalite, but I like a couple of their 18" set-ups (M15 3GN or TAC). Colt has the Competition Expert CRE, but I would rather have 410 SS than 416. The Stag is alright, but I would need to change the comp, as everything I've read says it really pushes the muzzle down, and that doesn't appeal to me, or the lack of BUIS (same with the Colt).

BCM has nothing available on their sight, nor does GB....

I guess I'm really looking for views on the Armalite, or ideas of a similar set-up in the $1300 - $1400 range.

Thanks

As you likely already know, you gain virtually nothing from the 18" barrel over a 16", especially at the ranges you specified. Look into LaRue barrels, they are available in every length and reasonably priced for the quality.

Yeah.....maybe 100 fps? I just want an 18" or 20" semi-target sort of AR with BUIS. I already have my carbines and too many mags, as well as a ton of 5.56. If I didn't have so much invested in the platform, I would love to get in to 6.8 SPC, but I digress...

Really no more than $1400. The more research I do on Armalite, the less I find out lol - I think I'm leaning towards the Colt CRE-18T (gen2 I think) the more research I do.......I know what's in the Colt, no clue about the Armalite. And this would be easy if BCM wasn't always out of stock :cuss:

Rock River is good stuff, but when you start adding the options on to their standard HB uppers, you are well into Colt and BCM territory - maybe even more?

And RR makes rifles for civilians, and for NM shooters, and for Gov't agencies. So of course their costs are right there with Colt, BCM and others. Nothing is free, cheap or easy ... Just showing that once you get to the good stuff, it's out there :D

Daniel Defense makes a few models with longer barrels. Those may be slightly above your price range, though.

Thanks for the replies everyone.......I just put money down on one at Bud's. I have been drawn to the Armalite M15 3GN 18" for a while, so that's where my money just went.

I've been thinking about getting into 3-Gun competition for a while now, and last year I bought a Beretta 1301 Comp because I got a great deal. I guess I have no excuses now!

Have you thought about building one? It would be a better rifle and cheaper too.

Yeah, but for the rifle I wanted (see above post) I'm not sure it would have been cheaper. The only thing I will probably change out is the BCG, and I have several of those laying around. Check out the options on the Armalite.......I think it's even a better 'value' than the Stag 3G, and you would be hard pressed to build that rifle for the same money as well. I have built a couple for low prices, but they were all run of the mill carbines that required me having patience for deals.

$1100 gets a killer rifle. Im not saying the Armalite is bad or anything, but building your own rifle is fun and rewarding. Approx prices below.

$250 LaRue barrel
$135 LaRue trigger
$125 upper/lower receiver sets
$100 Stock
$200 handguard
$100 lower build kit
$75 Gas block/gas tube
$100 bcg/ch

Maybe you are correct, Jackal - but it's not apples to apples.

Some of the parts on the Armalite -

$69 Adjustable gasblock
$190 Timney trigger
$85 Raptor charging handle
$140 Luth stock
$140 Adjustable break
$189 Handguard

But you are correct; it's generally cheaper to build your own. I have myself, just not this time.

Looks good. Please post up photos when you get it in your hands. :)

BCM does have them http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-...roup-w-BCM-KM-p/bcm-urg-18-ss410-kmr-a-15.htm , I am looking into the faxon Gunner in 18in to build an SPR upper. It has really good feedback if you want to build and is under $200 with pinned gas block from AIM. On the cheap end PSA regularly has 18 inch uppers for sale. They had a CHF chrome lined one on special this weekend for $399

They aren't (BCM) in stock, and haven't been for a good while now....

I realize you already have money down one something, I posted the wrong link. This one is in stock 13 inch handguards http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-...roup-w-BCM-KM-p/bcm-urg-18-ss410-kmr-a-13.htm
Those uppers are quite overpriced for what you are getting. Almost $700 for just a barrel, $185 handguard, $65 stripped upper, with $60 worth of gas block and gas tube and a $6 flash hider. A person is better off buying parts separately and spending the extra $$$ saved on quality tools.
