Two organisations working to protect our use of knives against politicians are the American Knife and Tool Institute and Kniferights, Inc.

Many of you are familiar with AKTI (http://www.akti.org/) and it's strong industry backing working on keeping knives in our hands. ATKI has been successful in influencing legislation to prevent one hand opening knives from being classified as switchblades.

The "new kid on the block" is Kniferights.org headed up by Doug Ritter. Knife Right is a grassroots 2A end-user organisation dedicated to keeping knives in our lives. They've been referred to as "The 2nd front in the fight for the 2nd Amendment". Expect them to be very outspoken and active in individual rights cases.

Both have open memberships and take donations to fund their efforts.

Are they banning knives in Germany altogether....?

In many countrys knife rights are under big time attack.
A forum in Germany reports....or at least this is what I could understand from the Babble fish translation of it.

That they are or were banning knives, forums that talk about knives, and guilds that promote the study and making of knives.
The forum owner writes in an understandably upset tone.
If anyone reads or speaks German, a more clear picture of what is happening with this might be real interesting.
the forum is messerforum.net

Thanks for pointing this out. Living in a "free state" here in the US I've never really thought anything about knife rights honestly. Even before I had my CCW a tactical folder has been part of my EDC since I was a teenager. Being that it is so common place where I live I honestly never really considered that there are places where even a few inch foldable blade cannot be legally carried in a pocket or a fixed blade knife legally carried on a belt in sheath. I will certainly be signing up for these organizations as I think a bare minimum for every human regardless of place of residence should be the right to atleast carry a bladed tool. After all it is just a tool, not merely a weapon. I use my knives just about every single day for the last 15+ years and have luckily never had to defend myself with a blade, so knives are in fact tools and not solely weapons. It's just a shame that there even NEEDs to be organizations to fight for this fact which should be common sense in my opinion. To me a knife, firearm, screwdriver, automobile, walking stick etc are all merely tools. They do not go out and cause harm to anyone, anywhere by themselves. It is the user that does or doesn't make them dangerous so im always glad to see places fighting to make that common knowledge.

You can get into a lot of trouble making assumptions. There are cities in TX where knives with locking blades are illegal. Up to just a few years ago, the definition of an illegal knife in TX state laws would have included an Opinel knife that was loose enough to swing open with centrifugal force. The state knife laws in TX have been improved, but there are still some pitfalls for people who aren't careful. I imagine similar situations exist around the country, even in the "free states".

While TX passed premption into law last year, the point that not every state or community have laws friendly to knife owners. It is important to support organizations like Knife Rights that work with tiny budgets and few staff to change the laws that treat all of us as if we're criminals.

Glad to see people are out there fighting for rights. Here is a scary story:

I flew to Philadelphia to visit an old friend. In Philly, they now have the so-called "Kindergarten Law" in which it is absolutely illegal to carry anything sharp. Anything, even a small swiss army knife or scissors. Whats worse, if you get busted for it you can get $300 fine and 90 days in jail.

Found here under “The Philadelphia Administrative Code”:

§ 10-820. Cutting Weapons in Public Places. 240
(1) Definition.
Cutting Weapon. Any knife or other cutting instrument which can be used as a weapon that has a cutting edge similar to that of a knife. No tool or instrument commonly or ordinarily used in a trade, profession or calling shall be considered a cutting weapon while actually being used in the active exercise of that trade, profession or calling.
(2) Prohibited Conduct. No person shall use or possess any cutting weapon upon the public streets or upon any public property at any time.
(3) Penalty. The penalty for violation of this Section shall be a fine of not less than three hundred (300) dollars and imprisonment of not less than ninety days.

Been a member of Knife Rights for several years now, they also have a GREAT annual raffle that just started and is really worth looking into!

They have made a lot of progress in the last few years in turning around many silly knife laws and increasing sanity and freedom in America. Nothing at all against akti, I'm not familiar with them.
