I had a few of my favourites at the range today and among them was my XDs .45. I shot it last after a couple .40s and a 9mm and the muzzle flash was almost disorienting at the indoor range from the XDs. I was firing Fed. HST and Hydroshock among other ball ammo and they all had a huge fireball out the end of the barrel. I shoot a lot of magnum handguns and muzzle flash has never distracted me, maybe it was just darker than normal in the range today. My question is, has anyone else experienced this and is there any low flash ammo in .45 for short barreled pistol?

My XDs 45 has quite a lot of muzzle flash also, which is of course expected in a short barreled gun. Personally I don't find it that bothersome, but it could be a distraction in a low light situation.

Speer has a Gold Dot "Short Barrel" 45 round on the market. I also believe Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty use a "low flash" powder.

I still carry Hornady TAP ammo in my 45's.

Most ammo makers claim their SD ammo is low flash. Five inches is the traditional length for 45 barrel and I would guess most factory ammo is loaded with that in mind.
If you load your own there are many low flash powders and loads for shorter barrels.

Thanks, guys. I don't reload my carry rounds so i am going to try some of the gold dot just to see if it makes a difference.

I have the xds .45 also, I shoot Fed. HST and Gold Dots 230gr. I love this pistol and enjoy shooting it, I guess I just don't notice a flash

First, I think this pistol is a great package for CCW and carry it often. I also shoot it quite a bit but it wasn't I until shouting it in an indoor range in fairly dark conditions. The shooting lane light was out, not the target light just the one over the shooting station. I shot several calibres and guns that day and didn't notice anything un till I shot the XDS.

Every gun I own will produce muzzle flash if the light level is low enough. The gun is not the problem.
