everybody thinks their favorite 22 is the best. me included. how about now that spring is almost here we find out. say you go to your own favorite spot. shoot your fav 22 pistol at any range convenient. any normal pistol range. 7yds, 50 ft, 25yds, no matter.
.....only two rules. you have to squeeze the trigger yourself and you have to hold the pistol yourself. no machine rests.
...you can rest your wrist on a bag, your elbows, or what ever, some of us are older, shakier etc. no part of the pistol can rest on anything. up to it?
...then you post a pic of the gun, ammo and target. well? what you think folks?

I would gladly do either in person. I am not interested in "online matches". I am skeptical of many of the results posted.

this idea stems from the what good is a 22 thread. especially how great some pistols are. nothing to be gained or lost by lying. and if you are good/young enough to shoot one handed than you are already the king!

@rem1858 is referring to the firing position for NRA Conventional Pistol - aka "Bullseye Competition." One handed, standing, rimfire, centerfire, and 45acp (1911) fired slow fire, timed fire, and rapid fire at 50yrds... The pinnacle of conventional handgun (not specialty pistol) precision...

What's the point of a "contest" if there is no CoF? How is that a "challenge"? It's just a bunch of small groups. Different kinds of online contest threads are all over online; honor code for shooting, submit target pictures, a moderator and/or the OP keep a running tally of top scores. Rugerforum.net does a couple contests each year (print off the targets, follow the CoF, submit the picture), Marlin Owners has the "Black Death Challenge" thread, Predatormasters used to have one which I think started on the Hide which was a 5shot group, 6 groups per page rifle challenge (both AR's and stick shifts), PM also has one for Dot Torture CoF, wanna say it was here a year or so ago there was a 3x5 card Daily Carry contest...

Pick a CoF which is intriguing, guys will shoot it and post results. Like the late, great James Earl Jones said - "build it, they will come..."

I haven't been shooting lately (change in life's priorities), but I already have targets from similar challenges several years ago. I'm happy enough with these guns, but I don't make any claim that my or any other .22 "is the best".

4" S&W 617, 25 yards, 5 rounds, standing, unsupported, double action:

And since I've been accused of having a revolver bias, here's a target from an on-line match using a MkIII: 3 shots, 10 yards. Rested (bottom), and standing unsupported (top).

I don't know what CoF is, but I used to moderate and participate in online shooting matches at another forum for pistol or rifle.

What we did is not just shoot for groups, because a good group can still not hit the bullseye. What we did was have a score that was based on measured group size added to the distance of the furthest shot from center of bullseye. All measurements were center to center and the smallest total number was the winner.

It is a pretty decent workaround when many people wouldn't have access to the same type of target or even the same caliber of gun.

The OP just wants affirmation that old Colt's and S&W's are better than anything new. ;)

nah not at all. I have enough new and old. just trying to get off the keyboard and shoot something. collected my second soc sec check. lucky enough to be able to hit the range during my shortened work day.

I think he's talking about having fun.
I love having fun. The main thing that indicated the OP wanted to see which gun model was most accurate were, you know, the opening sentences of his post:
"everybody thinks their favorite 22 is the best. me included. how about... we find out."

Varminterror, I didn't know what it meant, either. What does that make you think of me?

Some of us just enjoy shooting... you know, just shooting..

Good grief folks... he's just trying to start a fun thread to talk about shooting fun pistols. No need to over-analyze or criticize. If you don't like the conditions then you can certainly start your own thread with whatever course of fire and position and ammo and target and time requirements you desire.

I don't normally shoot paper so I have to be jealous of PythonElite's tasty 75 yard group. very nice!

Thanks 1K... I shot a target yesterday at 25 yards. I only shot one target. Not a pile and cherry picked the best... Lol

Speaking for myself - as one criticizing the thread - I felt a little cheated when I opened up a "Pistol Challenge" thread where we're encouraged to go shoot, then found out it's nothing more than a "post your targets" thread. Kinda like a sign out front of a restaurant which says, "all the food you want," then when you get inside, it's just pictures of food... Doesn't really sate my appetite.

It WOULD be a fun thread, and I'd go out and shoot some groups if the OP would present a Course of Fire. Make a proper "challenge" out of it. Whether I post my groups to the threads or not, I steal the CoF's of all of these "forum challenges" and contests that I see, and use them as "something new" at the range.

So yeah - it WOULD have been fun to have had a challenge/contest. Even if it's an easy one, and nobody keeps score, and it's all honor-code based, if it gets people out and shooting, it's fun. "Post your targets" threads where guys just dig out the same old targets with random conditions just aren't as exciting. I don't have digital photos taken of them, and don't have any of them photo-hosted, but I have a cache of those "lucky day" targets in a tub under my reloading bench, I know there are a few 22LR pistol groups in there - some of which might be a decade old. Where's the fun in that? I'm a guy who enjoys shooting a lot more than I enjoy bragging on a target I shot 15yrs ago, which is why I haven't cared to digitize and photo-host my old targets. Let's shoot something...

alright now we got the spirit of things. I fished out one of mine (marvel precision series 2) on a kahr 1911. cci mini mag is the suggested ammo. I will need some help with pics tomorrow! thanks folks.

ps chic, I just got my new specs courtesy of the va health care system. now I can see!
