I've been thinking about making some Kydex knife sheaths and handgun holsters I see two different forming methods, one being a foam press and the other a vacuum method.
I am familiar with the vacuum system for applying veneers in wood working but was wondering which would be best for my Kydex projects?

Either work, but it depends on the type you want to produce. If you're making "taco style" holsters, a hinged press is largely required. I prefer presses, as I make both types, so I have to have presses, and I can use different weights of foam to encourage different responses to detail in different parts of the holster. I made a press set up which can produce flat pressed sandwich style as well as hinged press taco style holsters. Angle iron frames with plywood inserts, running wingnuts on the bolts to act as adjustable hinges and provide my pressing pressure. I have a vacuum press table, never use it for kydex, only for leather.

I'm ghetto, my "press" is just 2 squares of plywood and I apply manual pressure. For small items, I just use my hands pressing down on the foam, especially if the item has a lot of curve to it like a speedloader.

Some sort of foam press is a cheap, easy, and effective option for holsters, sheaths and pouches. They are pretty straight forward to make.
