nice pieces. bet they shoot great

I was a full sized 5" barrel guy for a long time. as I became a better shooter ,I came down with a case of commander sizeditis. I now enjoy the smaller sized guns as much as I do the ful sized 1911s I shoot

That's where I'm at.

I started with a few 5" 1911's, then I tried a few subcompacts a RIA and a S&W Pro Series. I shot them very well, I just couldn't shoot them very well quickly.

I've always preferred 4" revolvers, so figured a 4" 1911 might be just the ticket. I came across my Springer, and even though it had some accuracy issues I fell in love with the handling characteristics so I snapped up the Colt as well.

I'm a recent convert, but think the commanders don't give up much at all.

I love commanders, add a bobtail and I find them perfect for carry.

The Dan Wesson VBob is a particular favorite of mine, though I've had good luck with Kimbers, SIG and Springers in the past.

I plan on bobtailing my beater full-size to make sure I actually like shooting one and if I like it, I'm gonna bobtail the Springer and the Colt.

I have a feeling I'll like the bob.

Too bad I don't know anyone locally that'd let me shoot theirs and I'd skip bobtailing my beater, and just go for it with my commanders.

I'm a fan of the commander-sized 1911s...

Below is my Sig version of the commander. It is all stainless with a bronze/brown vapor deposition coating. The rounded butt, checkered front strap, night sights, ambi thumb safety, and nice trigger make it one of my favorites for carry.

It is definitely heavier than my GLOCK 19, but I like it anyway.

Edmo, if that was a lightweight I'd be all over it.

Front strap checking, forward slide serrations, bobtail, long trigger. I'd just prefer a single sided safety and an alloy frame.

I would suggest you "try it before you buy it". I thought I would like the bobtail design too but when I tried one out at the gun shop I found it rather uncomfortable to hold and changed the handling dynamics of the gun. Found that 1911s felt much more comfortable and handled better, for me that is, with a flat mainspring housing.

If I could find a bobtail locally to try, I would.

But, since I can't...

I've got a Noinco that has been beat up and in a moment of foolishness I installed a Caspian rail onto the bottom of. The Norc has been a bit of a test bed for me and could use refinishing anyways. It's second application of parkerizing is starting to show a good bit of wear. If I decide I really don't like the bob, I'll buy a new Caspian receiver and salvage as much as I can for it.

I'm a southpaw so it has to have an ambi-safety.

Alloy vs steel frame... Lighter to carry vs more durability and less felt recoil. There are many ways to look at it, but every option has a tradeoff. I think Sig makes an alloy framed commander length pistol. However, I don't know if it has the standard 1911 slide profile like mine or their squared off Sig version.

I've never handled one, but the lightweight Ruger commander version looks interesting. Their alloy frame has a feed ramp made of a harder metal (I believe titanium), thus increasing the durability of that portion of the frame.

I could easily see myself picking up a 9mm Ruger lightweight commander.
I heavily considered it, and really do like hire they added the titanium feed ramp and the price is attractive.

I'm mostly going to use the Springer with the steel frame for range time and training to save some wear and tear on the Colt.

Let us know how the Norinco mods go and whether or not you get a Ruger Commander in 9mm. I have been thinking about getting one of those too.

If I do, it probably won't be anytime soon. I've put it on my "if I find a smoking deal on one" list.

I need to put more rounds through these guys, the Norc whenever I get around to modifying it, my P01 and a no dash 686 I'm picking up today. Plus I'm looking into getting into sporting clays here now that the weather is getting nice in Ohio.

Its a good problem to have!

That's odd. Does your champion have a large beavertail like mine? Anything other than the traditional GI grip safety has always worked fine for me. Kimber, Wilson Combat, Springer, Colt, Rock Island, S&W even Taurus's beavertail have never given me trouble.

I like the small ring hammer on the Colt to be the most aesthetically pleasing personally, it's slightly smaller than most as well. I think it would be the least likely to bite you while the Springer does seem to be a little longer front to back than most hammers which could contribute.

Mine doesn't have a large beavertail. It's really strange, I have a Norinco, Rock Island, Colt and Chaz Daly, and the Springer is the only one that tears me up.

Do they all have the GI beavertail?

I'd say that's a good enough reason to modify the Springer unless you want to keep it original for one reason or another.
