This is a 25-20 Winchester that my wife inherited. The story is that her great uncle was a cowboy and he carried this. Along the way, a well meaning but no so talented relative refinished it, but that's another story. It seems to be in pretty good shape mechanically. I am wondering about 2 things: first, the possibility of shooting it; is it safe? Secondly, since I am not a reloader (yet), are there sources for decent ammo out there? The few cartridges that came with the gun are pretty scary looking. Any information appreciated. thanks 20170415_135715_resized.jpg

yes its safe to shoot any factory 25-20 in it, and ammo can be found for it. to bad about the refinish, but don,t cry over spilled milk. your wife got a nice shooten iron. eastbank.

Model 92 Winchester, considered a "strong action" capable of handling any .25-20 load on the market. It is safe.

Factory ammunition is available although rather expensive, a dollar or so a shot.
Here is one vendor

A long list at
https://ammoseek.com/ammo/25-20-Winchester
You have to be careful, the Captech/Jamison ammo is .25-20 Single Shot which is NOT the same stuff, even though Ammoseek lists it the same. You want .25-20 Winchester... made by Remington, confusing as that may sound.

Thanks for the information. I am going to buy a box and give it a try- it would be a waste not to shoot it. I really like the size and balance of this rifle- might have to turn it into a high dollar squirrel gun.
