Has anyone ever seen a flat (shotgun style) ribbed plastic buttplate on a Browning 1885 High Wall?

I'm presently looking at one at my LGS.

According to the serial number, the rifle is an 1885 High Wall built in 1985 -- the first year of production when Browning changed from the older B-78 to the new 1885.

Most of the B-78 and 1885 Brownings I have seen in-person and online have a rubber recoil pad. This black plastic butt plate is not stamped "Browning" but it also does NOT look aftermarket -- the fit and finish with the stock are perfect. And the stock does not look like it has been cut down or reduced in length in any way. The plastic butt plate is affixed with two simple slotted screws.

I know I can order a factory rubber Browning recoil pad to replace this hard plastic one, I'm just wondering if anyone has any sense if this is a factory part or an aftermarket part.

Thank you!

Mine has a rubber recoil pad that has turned into a rock over time. Since it's chambered in .45-90 and very light, this is rather a problem. I need to do something about it, but for the time being don't shoot it.

I've seen them over the years with both plastic plates and rubber pads. Mine is the third type with the blued metal butt plate. And it really sucks with full bore 45-70 loads.

Mystery solved: the previous owner cut about an inch off the stock and added a smaller, aftermarket buttplate.

Gorgeous rifle otherwise.

I passed.
