How has your season gone so far? Last year a group of toms flew off the roost directly into our decoy spread and in 10 seconds my buddy and I filled our 3 tags. This year, same set-up in the same spot and another exciting result. The first two toms came from about 150 yards away, skirted our spread and move on, always just out of range. Then two more toms came from about 200 yards away and this time started strutting in range. My buddy and I counted to 3 and shot simultaneously. Both birds dropped in their tracks. I've left the blind set up and plan to return there in a few days and attempt to fill my 2nd tag. By the way, we both shot them with 2.75 inch 12 ga max load #5; no need for 3 inch turkey loads.

Tom

Our season started Wednesday. My hunting buddy went alone. Three came in. He missed.

I'm going first time Saturday morning.

I go a week from next Wednesday...the wait is killing me! My trail cams have captured a lot of activity. There are two exceptionally large cobblers I've got my eye on. Keeping my fingers crossed !

No bird this year. I've seen birds down the road, but nothing around me. I've only got 27 acres to find one on, so it ain't like I have national forest or something to hunt. I hunted with my .223 M4 this year. The one I shot last year was shot with a .22 magnum. I just wanted to try the M4 on one. Shotguns are for doves. :D

In Kansas we can only shoot turkeys with shotguns. Seems nuts to me since many states allow rifles. One place I hunt has large fields and turkeys can be in the middle at about 300 yards. Would be nice to whack on with my .243 which is set up for long distance shooting. Oh well, I'm doing well with a shotgun, so I shouldn't complain.

we can use shotguns and rifles in the fall on toms and hens, but shotguns only on toms(bearded birds) in the spring. eastbank.

I haven't even seen a bird in person. I've caught a jake scratching and pecking around on the trail cam, but no luck. I've been at it since the 6th and the season ends next week :(

And I had a call from my buddy and he called in two toms late this afternoon during a break in the rain.
He had his 8 year old daughter with him and he got one of the gobblers. :D
He, and she, were/are pretty excited about it. :)

Went a few weeks ago in SC for 2 days- 1st day the tome got in a fight about 200 yards away while we were calling them in to the hen decoy and they never came in. The next day some coyotes broke up all the action. Redeemed myself 2 weeks ago in Iowa with a 26 lb tom with a 10 1/2" beard.

Well, won't know until next week, but if the trail cam shots from last week are any indication, I may at least see a few birds.

Just a few pics, but definitely gets me excited! There's a flock of 30-40 birds that hang on the property. And I've got my eye on 3 very nice Toms. Hope to call one in close enough to shoot next week .

I woke up each morning to gobbling. Nature's alarm clock LOL

20170407_070802.jpg Our season closed today. I didn't get a bird this year, but had many close calls.
When it wasnt raining, I was working. When I did get to go, it was rainy and the birds were inactive. Such is life for a farmer.
Son got one. Hunting buddy filled two tags.
Between work and hunting turkeys, I have been getting up at 4am for a while.

I've been trying to go again, but it keeps raining. Looking good for the weekend though.....gun auction on Saturday and turkeys on Sunday and maybe crappie fishing on Monday...my cup runneth over.
Here it seems like they get REAL active just after a rain. I think going after worms, grubs, and such.

OK, last one of the year, today. 14 pounds- nothing to brag about, but a legal bird. Season is over on Sun,. hadn't got one yet in NC this year.

Seems to be an unproductive season for me. It's my first season so I've still got a lot to learn. However, I'm thinking this might be my last time hunting for a long time. Seems the state expects me to live off $600 a month after doling out $1300 to my kids moms. Doesn't really seem fair to me, but I'm not one to judge. It's my punishment for making more money than my kids moms I guess.

here,s what i called in earier this week, i think i need a bigger gun. eastbank.

In Idaho we have more turkeys than you can shake a stick at. We are allowed 7 birds a year (2 in the spring toms only). In the fall it goes either sex which is an amazing hunt while looking for deer at the same time. Went out on opening day and only heard a few gobbles in the morning but none committed to my calls. By 2:00 I decided to try my last ditch spot that was a 1.5 mile hike up a logging road. Got to the draw where I always see turkeys and there was nothing. Called for about 40 minutes and got some responses but nothing came in close. Left that spot and headed back down the road giving calls along the way. Back where I was up at the top I heard a large tom gobbling at me. My hunting partner and I went back up the road and it sounded like he was coming down the road toward us. We took position on the side of the road in a few saplings and waited. I called the turkey within 30 feet of my partner and he missed the only shot taken that day because he had a full choke on his shotgun. We will be going out again tomorrow so hopefully we will have better luck. It was fun either way just being out in the woods again.

The season started really well. I had been in the blind just long enough to drop the shades, sit down, make a call and start texting my wife to let her know where I was. Before I finished the text, I looked up and a big tom had walked in to within 10 yards to my right. I took just enough of a look to know it was big and had a decent beard. My foot slipped while twisting to make the shot. That spooked the tom which ran behind a tree about 15 yards out. It stayed there peering around the tree trying to see what had made the noise. After a couple of minutes I thought what the heck and gave a couple of soft short purrs. It worked. The stupid bird walked right back to where it had been. One shot and it was on the ground. I got out and checked that it was really dead, tagged it and headed home. I knew it was big when I shot it, I knew it was big when I picked it up, but I was surprised when I got it home and weighed it, 32 lbs. The beard is 10", so good but not great. But the spurs are what I need to formally measure. They are big with a curve to them. I want to recheck but my first measure with a straight ruler was 1 5/8" from base to tip. They look more like fangs than spurs.

The best part is the bird is delicious. My wife made home broth out of the legs and thighs. We've had a nice batch of turkey and rice, a couple of nice turkey and mashed potato dinners and two big batches of turkey and noodles with that home made broth. Got just enough dark meat left for another turkey and rice.

Hope to fill my second tag tomorrow.

2nd installment.......went to the same location Monday morning. Lots of gobbling and lots of movement. Saw only one large tom, but too far to shoot. A curious jake walked among my decoys. The large tom followed his girlfriend around and refused to leave her. It was fun to watch. When I decided to call it a day and dismantle my blind, the tom mocked me with lots of gobbling. If I was a better stalker and had a fan, I would have tried to go to him. Instead I went home to a nice shower and some bacon and eggs. My attention will now turn to fishing.
