I have a Taurus nickel plated, snub-nose(1.5") , 5-shot .38 Spcl that I would like to order an IWB holster for. I've been all over this thing & I can not find a model number! I know this is a copy of a name brand firearm. What do I order? Also, would this gun be safe with +P loads?

TIA...Your help is appreciated!

I'm looking at a Vedder's light tuck holster which is on sale today. Can't find a Taurus 85(?) I don't mean to insult Taurus, as I really like this gun, but isn't this the same as a S&W this or a Colt that?

And for future reference, Taurus stamps the model number on the inside of the cylinder crane. I had my M66 for almost 30 years before I noticed that, and only did when I read that about the 85 I got last year and went and looked.

Yes, the 85 is "+P safe." My older 85, a three-inch stainless from 1995, is loaded with a +P load. The 85 is one of Taurus's few well-respected weapons.

Incidentally, the round cylinder release on yours indicates it's not one of the newest runs. If you want to find out when it was made, use the "find my model" feature on the website www.TaurusUSA.com and plug in the serial number. I don't know how far back it goes, though, as it could not find my M66, which I got in 1987.

Thank you all. I learned a lot in this thread. I checked the cylinder crane on my revolver & sure enough it was sort-of stamped "85" but I wouldn't have been able to read the 2 numbers if I didn't already know what they were suppose to say. Also I now know it is a "J" frame. Thank You All!

I believe that one is Stainless Steel, not nickel. They were polished more then than the ones they sell now. I carried that exact looking one for years as a back up when on duty, in an ankle holster or in a coat pocket in the winter.

Actually, the Taurus 85 (the older ones, very worthy snubbies in their own right) has the fully-shrouded ejector rod, so some finely-molded J-frame (the S&W doesn't have a shrouded ejector rod) holsters might not fit the 85, at least without some work and effort.

Most S&W J frame holsters fit. J frame grips will not.
JMHO but I'd be leary about running too much +P through a mod 85 if it's an earlier one. Quality was hit or miss back in the 90s/2000's. Hopefully you got a good one.

As others have said, the .38spl Taurus small-framed snub is an 85. It is largely based on the S&W J-frame with some improvements. The 85 and .357 605 are probably the best guns Taurus makes. I have one from 1991 that I bought 10-15 years ago that I haven't been able to get myself to sell even though I don't really like small-framed snubbies much. Anyway, as said, any S&W J-frame or Taurus 85 or 605 holster will work. Most Ruger SP101 holsters should work also since it is so close in size, though not all will.

Given that any Taurus small-frame revolver holster and any holster for a S&W 2" J-frame will work, you'll have plenty of options. Every major (and most minor) holster makers make holsters that will work, and usually most models of holsters are made for these guns as well. Since there are so many, it will be hard to give specific recommendations without a lot more about what you are looking for.

If you are curious, Taurus' website has a serial number lookup if you want to know what year yours was made, though for some reason it doesn't find all guns:

Thanks everyone for all the good info & advice. Serial number look up says made in 1992. This gun has been sitting unused in my night stand for about 15+ years. I took it to the range & was surprised how accurate the little snubby shot! I'm thinking of putting a bigger gun next to the bed & using the Taurus for carry. That's why the interest in +P's; not for general consumption, but for carry only. I'm a reloader, but as most experts suggest, I thought I'd buy a box of factory's for carry. Now to figure out what.38 Spcl ammo to buy & begin researching the endless possibility of holsters!...LOL

Look on Amazon, I just ordered an old school leather holster for Taurus UltraLite Model 85. Type in S&W J frame holsters and you will see a bunch. Just ordered one on sale for about $37.67. Desantis mini scabbard S&W J frame, black.

That's quite certainly a STAINLESS STEEL Taurus 85. Not nickel.

I rebuilt an 85 almost identical to yours a few years ago for my Mother-In-Law. She'd bought hers several years prior at a gunshow, and the heel who sold it to her saw an easy mark, as it had be severely abused. I had to fabricate a hand, since none of the 3 versions of 85 hands Taurus sent me would fit, and had to replace the cylinder with a Numrich take off since the indexing ratchet had been so damaged and was terribly out of time. Someone had done a kitchen table butcher job on the mainspring, which caused significant ignition issues. About $100 in replacement and tune up parts later, and the old Taurus was as good as new - or in reality, even better, since I'd hand fit and tuned the internals and done considerable optimization work (including an incredible stroke of luck through which the new cylinder actually had less BC gap than the original).

While your Taurus will no doubt be able to handle +P it is harder on the gun. If you look at the numbers +P really doesn't give you that much more velocity in short barrels. +P will give you more recoil and muzzle blast. If you look at the recent Lucky Gunner 38 Special tests many loads didn't expand at all in a 2".

I use 148 gr wad cutters in my S&W and Taurus J frames. Easy on you and the gun, easy to control, the bullet's already in an efficient shape, and gives adequate penetration.

Here's my nickle Model 85, circa 1984. That revolver has spent a lot of time with me over the years and never given any trouble.
