I went to my local Mills Fleet Farm where I buy most of my powder and primers to get some reloader 19 and found that they have hiked the price on powder on about half of there inventory. A few notable hikes,

Reloader 15, 19, and 22 raised to 39.89
IMR 4320 raised to 33.89
IMR 4895 and win 231 raised to 34.89
ramshot tac raised to 29.89
and the worst of all, 700x 14 oz raised to 29.89

I saw an assistant manager walking by and flagged him down to ask him about it. He said he was going to do some investigating but didn't know anything about it. Its a free market but I'm kind of peeved because there are only two places within 50 miles I can get powder and I tailor all my powder selection to what I can get at Fleet Farm and now I've been bait and switched. I am going to send them an email, if you buy reloading stuff from Mills fleet farm I suggest you do as well. Seams like such a foolish thing to do with reloading components now being the most available they have been for years.

I just went to the contact us section on there website and sent the following message. If you shop at Mills Fleet Farm I suggest you do the same to let them know what you think.

Today I went to the store to buy some ammunition reloading components and was shocked to see some of the powder that I normally buy has been raised in price by as much as 50%. For example below are the prices I saw on powders and there respective prices that they are availible for from other retailers

Reloader 15, 19, and 22 raised to $39.89, normally $25-27
IMR 4320 raised to 33.89, normally about $26
IMR 4895 raised to 34.89, normally about $27
Winchester 231 raised to 34.89, normally about $25
ramshot tac raised to 29.89, normally about $25
and the worst of all, 700x 14 oz raised to 29.89, availible from most places for $18

I realize its a free market, but I can't help feeling that I am being price gouged. I can get three of these powders locally for the price I listed and the rest I can get by driving about an hour or by ordering online. I buy about 20 lbs of powder a year but I won't be buying anymore reloading components at Fleet Farm unless the pricing goes back down to what it was.

thank you

same thing has happened at my LGS Ramshot powders now $27 and up sad TAC was a cheaper one close to $20 and Alliant is now in the mid $30's
Hodgdon is $23 to $28 and IMR is unchanged I dont get the Alliant price hike really mid $30's ouch , I will be ordering on line I think
Thought it was just my LGS doing this guess not

Anybody else seeing the Alliant reloader prices going up? I was just about to start loading 300 270win with it. I also use reloader 7 so mabey I need to order some of it.

I'll have to check the Blaine Fleet Farm, although when buying locally I tend to go to Cabelas. With the sale of Fleet Farm from the Mills family, I expect this is happening on a lot of other products as well.

if it's that high, order online at Powder Valley , inc. If you buy enough it WILL offset the Hazmat, and they will ship powder and primers in one pkg, which saves money.
Thats what I am moving towards I am in the process of picking my favorite powders so I can buy a larger lot once a year instead of being gouged

I gave up buying locally almost totally 5 to 6 years ago. I buy online for almost everything in guns, ammo, accessories and everything else. Can't remember the last time I bought something from a store in firearms, computer and electronic items, clothing and just about everything else. Food, pharmaceuticals, gasoline and auto repairs are about the only things I get locally anymore.

I have gone to online shopping for most things but I'm trying to go back to local retailers where I can.

How exactly is that "bait and switch"? It's not, they just raised prices. which I agree is outrageous. I have never bought powder locally. Buy it on line. People complain about the dreaded Haz Mat fee, but it's nothing when spread out over a large order and you don't pay crazy MN sales TAX!
7,875% or something??

The reason I say that is I only have about 15 kinds of powder I can actually get locally so I have tailored most of my reloading to components that I can get locally. As such I have invested a good bit of money reworking up loads for my guns to use what they have, and now that was all a waste of money. I know I can order powder online buts its easier to justify for me to go buy a pound of powder every 2 weeks than to order $300 of powder all at once when I don't know what I will be shooting next month.

I am moving more to buying reloading supplies on line. I needed some shot wads. I ordered them from New Mexico. They arrived in 48 hrs. I have been buying bullets and brass the same way.
I am shopping for a 10MM 1911. It will be my first on line firearms purchase.

15 kinds of powder?? You need more brands!;)

Just as an example. Reloader 15, 16, 17 19 at Graf and Sons is $27.00/lb. Haz Mat is $20 (low) and shipping is flat $8.00

Maybe some place is even cheaper??

You do the math:)

I have a local shooting supply store, but unless I just want to buy one pound of powder or 1000 primers I don't want to pay their rate. As an example - they charge 27.99 for a pound of CFE Pistol, and we have 9.75% sales tax in our state. So you're 30.72 including the tax. I can buy a pound from Graf and Sons for 19.99, so you don't have to buy much to make up the hazmat and shipping fees. And the local store is less competitive on primers.

Graf and Sons are great - the last time I looked they had a special going on where they waived their normal flat-rate 7.95 shipping. I responded by buying 4 pounds of powder and 5000 primers - all in about $244 including the single $20 hazmat fee. To buy the same locally (if they actually have CCI SPP) would have cost me approximately $286 before tax, $315 with. That means 6.3 cents/round rather than 4.8 for powder/primer - eroding the cost savings versus buying factory ammo.

The local store is run by nice people - but they're only open the same hours I work, making it a hassle to get there while they're open. I don't see their markup as truly excessive, but it challenges my budget nonetheless. And although it's not their fault they must collect tax, it's not really Graf and Sons's fault they have to charge a hazmat fee. I think Graf and Sons was a LGS before going online - a choice that may be necessary to stay in this business.

^^ agree Rule3^^ If you buy 5 pound kegs of Reloader 15 or 19 or 22 from Powder Valley ($110.00/keg) then that works out to $22.00 per pound plus the shipping/HazMat but you avoid making a trip to Fleet Farm once the week. Buy two pounds and the HazMat is covered so I'm very confused by this thread.

"Two phrases are noticeably missing from this thread:

1. "...and I haven't looked back."
2. "...it just works."
Someone please correct this oversight."

OK I will:)

YMMV

Buy once, cry once

In my semi-rural township here in NE PA there is a LGS/archery/fishing tackle shop that sells mostly (on the firearms side) hunting supplies. This store is no kidding 3 miles from my home and I live out in the country. True, he does have some handguns for sale and associated stuff but not much that would interest a serious target or competition shooter. He does however sell some reloading supplies, mostly RCBS tools, bullets, primers and powder.

All during the great powder shortage of 2013-2015, during the darkest times when no one could find any powder and when they did score some would brag about their find on this and other forums, this LGS had powder in stock. Didn't always have every possible powder and not always at discount prices but when everyone was kibitzing about running our of powder I was adding it by the keg to my bunker. I have not bought any pistol powder in about 2 years and probably will not need any for at least 3 more years although I believe in being well stocked so I will get some at the end of the year.

So what is my point in this message? I know many local (to me) handloaders that were back then crying for lack of powder. We all know some like that and some here were the ones crying. A lot of these people never thought to check this store to see if they had powder for sale. I know of two other stores in the general area that also had powder and little demand for it.

So, what I'm saying is check every nook and cranny, places that you might not think sell the stuff you want. And if that fails, order on-line.

I've bought powder online plenty of times before for stuff they don't have in town. Here is my issue with getting every last thing online. I want to have a local source that I and others can go to and buy a pound of powder or 200 primers or 100 bullets on whim. Likewise I know lots of people that buy 1 or 2 pounds of powder a year rather than my 20. If nobody goes and supports the two local retailers that actually sell the stuff then they will just not bother to carry it. That's not good for me or the guy that needs a pound a year. I'm more than happy to pay a few extra dollars a month to keep my local stores incentivised to stock the stuff, but I draw the line at an extra $10 per pound. In fact my biggest fear here is that there sales on the stuff will crash and they won't bother to sell it anymore.

It is a 200 mile round trip to my next source of reloading supplies. Our local Outfitter's supple is ok. They do take advantage of us. Now with a satellite computer connection I can shop the country for powder and primers.
