Nightstand Revolvers

I have a lot of snubbies and all have CT lasergrips. My wife prefers a laser that can be turned on to continuous mode without having to find an activation button, Crimson Trace makes a very inexpensive set that is perfect for her so we keep a 640 with 135 Gold Dots bedside.

My EDC, a Kel-Tec PF9, does "primary" nightstand duty. The "nightstand" is actually a desk. However, on a tall hutch on that desk is usually a 3-inch Taurus 85 in stainless.

My "leave-out-for-the-wife" gun sits on top of the safe. It's a stainless Taurus 94, in the only caliber she will shoot. However, when I leave the house, the 85 goes up there next to it.

Since my nightstand gun is also Linda's nightstand gun at the moment it's a Taurus Model 905 9mm revolver, but when her Kahr E9 arrives and is tested next week that will change. The Taurus is likely to remain for my use; it has an excellent trigger and has been perfectly reliable. Since I don't CC this gun I've considered putting a larger grip on it.

I am surprised by so many Taurus mentions. For years mine was my Taurus 66. I had to use it once, too. After I was burglarized and it was stolen I replaced it with a Taurus 689 (basically the fancier version of the same gun). I have had zero reliability problems and the triggers are good.

If I stay up late or am snoring badly I sleep in the spare room. I keep my Charter Arms Bulldog in there. I really like 44 special.

It's kind of ironic that I own many fancier handguns, but my HD ones are so humble.

And as another poster mentioned, for now it really doesn't matter. We have two large dogs that sleep on the floor by our bed. They wake easily, are loud, and have big sharp teeth. I think the handgun would just be to put the dogs' victim out of his misery.

It used to be a S&W pre-10 4" loaded with Remington 158 gr HTP. Now it's a S&W SD9VE loaded with 15 Hornady 124gr XTP. Although both the pre-10 & a Ruger LCR .38 are loaded & close by!

Winchester Model 1300 Defender 12 guage shotgun.
Bingo! Mine exactly. And a para ordnance p14.

But as to revolvers, there's a GP100 in my office...
My wife has a Mauser HSc bedside, but I'm trying to sway her towards an SP101 or speed six loaded with 38spcl (she's not a fan of recoil)

The Mauser HSc is a sweet little pistol, and is on my gun "bucket list". It has been my experience that women who A) are not afraid of guns and B) not afraid of using them, will generally out-shoot their significant others and are often more than capable of putting a .380 ACP or .32 ACP through an eye socket at 20 feet. If she likes the gun and can hit with it, you might oughta let her run with it...just sayin'.

Mine loves the 9x18 Makarov and let's just say I wouldn't want to be on her bad side if she were fondling it. She also has a 4" Taurus Total Titanium Tracker in .357 for her house and field gun, but she loves the Makarov...it appeals to her sense of cheapness (bargain hunter who even washes and dries zip-loc bags for reuse). Sooooo....I let that sleeping dog lie. Both of them...

She has pulled it before. We were on a journey many years ago and stopped in Charlotte, NC for overnight stay. I stopped at a convenience store for gas and beverages. As I stepped back out the store door heading to the car, I saw a big dude running pell mell down the street screaming "Lawdie...Lawdie don't shoot me..." When I got in the car, my wife was sitting in the passenger seat with her Makarov in her hands. I looked at her inquiringly, and she told me that some big dude was pounding and yanking on her car door trying to get in, and so she calmly reached down in her purse and pulled out her Mak. When she looked up, the dude magically disappeared...for some reason. She shrugged her shoulders and then stuck her Mak back in her purse and never gave the incident another thought. Sometimes having one trumps not having...

Oh, you're right. Our ladies seem to have a knack for firearms, and can put us to shame when they wanna!

She does love it, and is a pretty good shot with it. Slow, aimed fire, she is at least as good as I am with that HSc. doing double taps, I can bring it back online faster than she can.
But the real problem (in my mind) is that she will not do failure drills. It's been 100% reliable with my XTP loads, but it has been picky about other JHPs, and I can't get it out of my head that it'll decide to choke on the XTPs at just the wrong moment, and then she's SOL because she has no enthusiasm for practicing how to clear it. (Which can be a PIA with the HSc)

But with her DAO SP101, she really is a better shot with it than I am, can get them down range accurately pretty quickly, and handles reloads fine. A revolver in good shape with no high mileage wear issues is simply more reliable than a semi-auto. (Not wanting to start an argument...just MHO)
And reliability must come first.

Now that I've typed this.....maybe I'll load it with some FMJs and not worry too much more about it.

Mine is the same. No failure drills, plus she is not able to rack the slide back like she could 20 years ago either. She really is good with her Tracker using full-house magnums, but it's "heavy" and "bulky". Her excuse for not toting a big gun is that's why she keeps me around...:D

I gave her an 11ounce 351PD to carry on her infrequent walks. She keeps the Makarov in the car, round chambered with the safety on and if runs dry, can dump mag, & release the slide, but that's all. If the barbarians try to storm the gates, I'll just toss her my nightstand revolver and I'll grab my Bulldog 44.

My wife also favors revolvers so a few years ago I switched back over to carrying them. She doesn't practice often enough to clear malfunctions and more than once I've seen her wrap her offhand thumb around the back of her strong hand on a semi auto, just asking to have the slide slam into it. At that point I switched the bedside gun from a service size XD 9mm to a revolver and started carrying revolvers exclusively. I figured it was best to have uniform ammo and manual of arms in both of our guns in case she should ever need to use mine.

My first ccw was a j frame many years ago so I've come full circle. I've always preferred revolvers aesthetically and ergonomically, but for a time carried autos for the extra capacity. At this point I'd rather sacrifice a few rounds (I mostly carried single stacks with 6 to 8 rounds) and ensure whatever I've got works for her too.

My bedside gun is a 1911, 45ACP. But I wouldn't feel unarmed if the gun on my nightstand was the old, Smith, stainless, 38 Special with a 4" barrel I keep in a desk drawer in the living room. I think it's loaded with some pretty warm, 170gr. "Keith" style SWCs.

Before my Glock 17L with a TLR-1HL claimed the spot, it was a 6" stnls Ruger GP-100 with 158 semi wadcutters over 5.0gr of Bullseye. My wife stole my S&W 67 no dash for her side. It is loaded with 148 wadcutters over 2.7gr. of Bullseye. Any of those will do at the 15' or less they might be used. At least long enough to get to the AR or Rem 870 close by.
