Does anyone still make single shot rifles?

For the price and convenience, I suggest TC Arms (Contender, G2 or Encore).

357 mag was just my first thought... I'd also consider one in 308, would that be easier to find? I'm also thinking something fairly budget friendly, sadly I think that means a Ruger No.1 is out of the question.

They made some in 308 but not many, less than a thousand I think. Mostly in the AB configuration. There's a used 30-06 at my LGS. It's been there awhile. They don't move real fast.

Interesting, that looks like a clone of the H&R. Looks exactly the same, even the action pins are in the same place. I wonder if they bought the tooling from h&r after they closed?
It's not a clone... Last I read, all the H&R tooling was worn out and was one reason they stopped making it...

The Henry will be much better finished, higher quality single shot... I do believe it's been announced that the 30-30 and 357 will be added soon after the first batch of Henrys get going...

cva makes a fine single shot for hunting purposes. I own a stalker in 45-70 and its a tack driver for a sub $300 rifle.

I've already been in touch with Henry, asking about a .357 mag Single Shot. They said it's not in the pipeline, but I've told them that if they offer one, I'll buy. In the interim, I'll probably end up buying an MGM barrel for my Encore. Wish I'd have bought one of the H&R's in .357 when they were available.

I do have a Marlin 1894 in .357, but much as I try, I just don't like the lever action.

I'd be interested in the Henry if it didn't weigh nearly 7 lbs. To me, that's unacceptable for a single-shot hunting rifle. A nice 30-30 single shot that weighs in under 7 lbs. scoped would be a welcome gun however. Perhaps a lightweight synthetic stock stainless version will appear someday. One can dream, right?

The CVA rifles are amazingly good. The triggers are excellent. I have one in 35 Remington and one in 300 Blackout. Both were <$200 from Buds.

The fewest number of any single shot actions I know of were 20 made by Winchester in the mid 1950's. Model 70 extended magazine actions normally used for the 300 H&H Magnum were not milled out for the box magazine to fit in. The boltway was ramped so belted case rims slid up behind the extractor claw loading a round. A solid bottom, single shot action, only the ejector and trigger slots were cut in. A heavy, very stiff action.

Bought by the US Army Rifle Team for use in their long range match rifles.

How about Ruger Number 1s. Doesn't Lipsey's still get
them made by Ruger in small numbers?

Zeke
They're still listed on Ruger's website. The numbers they make may be small, but the numbers they want, to the right of the $ sign are rather large.
Even so, I might look into a 6.5 Creedmoor in one. I've always liked the Number 1; my ex BIL had a .458 Win Mag in that model. Never got to shoot it, probably a good thing for my shoulder.

i had 10 ruger #1,s and when the prices rose i sold 7 of them at a hefty profit. but kept three, a new 35 whelen in the A model and two semi varmites B,s with 26" barrels, a 223 and a 300 win. eastbank.

I talked to a rep from Henry at a gun show a couple weeks ago. He said the single shots are delayed and would not be out for a little bit. Interestingly he said that they were going to make the Henry an interchangeable barrel system but decided not to bother since there whole cost for the gun was going to be only a little more than an encore barrel so they didn't think there was a market for it! What an incredible blunder!

There's a company that makes airsoft type rifles that makes a rolling block in 357 and 44 mag. I think the company is Tippman. Browning or Winchester also make a single shot as well though they're falling block rather than break action.

The Miroku/Browning/Winchester 1885s and B-78s are a closet contender for the best simple hunting rifles ever - much more accurate on average than Ruger #1s due to the better free-float barrel attachment. Like the #1 calibers come and go, but right now you can get .405 win, .375 H&H, .243, .30-40 Krag, .45-70, .40-65, .22-250, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .30-06. Should be something in there for most applications.
