Could I get a 'Born on Date' for my new to me S&W 10-5?
It has a 2" barrel, square grip and a blue finish. Serial C9716**.

MPDC4737

Actually I think that's a round butt Model 10. Haven't seen many like that with a 4" barrel. I like it!

Alte Schule

Nice nickel plated Model 10!

I believe I just bought a K-38 (pre15)
no model number on it, like my other S&W revolvers.
4 screw
6 shot
Square butt
38S&W Spl
Pinned barrel
Adjustable sights
4"
The "&" is the old style with the wide bottom,

Number under the crane is not the same as on the butt and has an "E" above it the number is 36488 with a "7" under it
Ser # on the butt is K 267805
My research tells me it's between 1955 and 1957 . Can you narow it down for me ,and get a birthdate and value. I'd put it at 65% no paperwork and it has a old set of Packmar grips on it .
Thanks

I've just acquired a Model 12 that appears to be in excellent shape. There is what appears to be slight holster wear on the muzzle and on the front of the frame. The cylinder is magnetic, not aluminum.
It's a 38 special
It has a 2" barrel and square butt.
It is a 6 shot cylinder with fixed sights
The serial number is C 3523xx. There is no model # on the crane but there is the cylinder number.
There is a screw in front of the trigger guard. (What is this screw for?)

Can anyone give me an idea of when it was made and would anyone care to hazard a guess as to its value?

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

Looking to find out year on 38 Chief Special Airweight I inherited from my Dad.
a)38
b)2 inch
c)Round
d)5 shot
e)fixed
f)43463

Picked up 4 pieces from my Granddad's collection last week. An Iver Johnson Hammerless Top Break .32 made in 1896. (Easy to find the date.) A Colt DA .41 made somewhere around 1920. (I can't pin it down.) My google fu must be weak. I have been looking all over the internet for help with a date on these two ole gals. Trying to see how old and what they are.
1. S&W Top Break; 6" barrel ; Caliber appears to be .44?; SN 213XX

2. Looks like the S&W; 6" barrel; Caliber stamped on top of barrel .44 Winchester; weird markings on the cylinder and side of frame. Says Belgium on grip.

I have three (3) Smith and Wesson Model 10 revolvers, with two (2) being the Heavy Barrel model revolvers. I also have a J-frame Model 28 (and several other firearms), but right now my questions are on the Model 10s.

The first one (my now deceased father-in-law's duty weapon which he then passed on to me - I was a "newbie" at a different department when he retired and too have since retired - after he retired as that was what we carried then also in the early to mid 1970s before transitioning to Colt M1911A1 Series 70 pistols in 1976).

The info on it is:

Caliber: .38 Special

Barrel Length: 4" Barrel

Butt Shape: Square butt

Number shots: Six-shot

Type Sight: Fixed Sight

Serial Number: C573???

Model Number: 10-3

A couple of years ago I "retired" that Model 10 HB that was "our" service revolver (I had it from 1972-1976, I am not sure how long he carried it before that, he was with a Sheriff's Department and then with a City PD).

I picked up another Model 10HB from a gun shop for the upstairs bedroom hideaway (no kids at home, no visitors ever upstairs)

The info on it is:

Caliber: .38 Special

Barrel Length: 4" Barrel

Butt Shape: Round butt

Number shots: Six-shot

Type Sight: Fixed Sight

Serial Number: AYM86??

Model Number: 10-8

Along the way, I picked up a short-barrel Model 10 to supplement the J-Frame model 28 Airweight that was a duty back up gun and often an off-duty carry gun.

That one is this information:

Caliber: .38 Special

Barrel Length: 2" Barrel

Butt Shape: Square butt

Number shots: Six-shot

Type Sight: Fixed Sight

Serial Number: 5D20???

Model Number: 10-7

Thank you in advance for any information.

Hondo

I fear something has happened to Radagast, health wise. He has been an appreciated and extremely helpful resource person in the past.
I hope for his return to health, if that is the case. Otherwise, I hope to see him again, on a different plane.

Could the moderator or another THR viewer/member that is well versed on the subject (mfg. of S&W revolvers) step in, at least temporarily?

Radagast, I hope you are in a good place, whatever your situation.

I've noticed that this thread contains recently mainly questions and only few answers. But I haven't found a better place to say hello to this forum, so I'll decided to do this here, while asking a question about one of my revolvers. I think that "Revolvers" is the best section to introduce myself. I can date my passion to six-shooters back to when I was about three years old, when one of my uncles gave me a spring-driven plastic revolver (a replica od Colt SAA as I recall) that made a loud BANG that drove my parents crazy. Now, 35 years later, living in a generally non-gun country (not that I complain, gun laws were getting better and better in the last years), in the old world, born behind the - luckily non existent any more - iron curtain, I'm turning my dreams into reality, after I went through all the troubles to get a gun permit.

Let's get to the point: I bought this .38 S&W Military and Police, 5" barrel from a German gun dealer. Thus, it has a German proofmark, dated 65 and a mark of a large German gun dealer, Hege. But from its features (not a numbered model, 5 screws, large head of the ejector rod, type of grips, .38 S&W caliber, no "marcas registradas") I stipulate that it is much older than 1965 and made before 1957. Actually, from what I read in this thread on the S&W forum I deduce that it can be as old as 1941 because it a has no-prefix serial numer 813458. But it has no military proofmarks, neither US nor British, except a "P" on the butt. Can anybody confirm that it is really a IIWW model? Or at least older than 1960? I'd like to shoot it in a historical pistol contest in my shooting club but guns used in the contest have to be older than 1960. The 1965 mark does not help to prove that the gun can be legally used in the contest so I have to verify and get a proof that it is really older, only it was sold as a surplus gun on a civil market decades after it was made. Or just the opposite - tell me that it is not suitable for this contest so that I have to use my 1937-made Nagant...

Regarding the revolver's condition: it looks pretty worn, but it is tighter than other revolvers I have. Grips are the worst and it has a really deep dent on the left side of the frame behind the hammer. I'v no idea what could have happened to leave such a big and deep dent in this place. But the internals work fine, timing is correct. The bore is good, only the muzzle can profit from re-crowning. DA trigger is rather creepy by SA trigger is great so for the bullseye contest it could be a nice gun.

Finally, the pictures:

Some help, compadre, por favor, if you're able!
All the best to you!
Thanks!
