"...into battle tommorow I'd rather take my M1 Carbine..." Yeah. No SKS though. Isn't accurate enough.
Never had any interest in a semi-auto varmint rifle even when they weren't evil up here.
"...ownership is at one level a political statement..." Gotta muscle car? Same analogy. Take the politics out of the equation and the whole issue goes away.

I bought one before the last scare. Had to sell it due to hitting some hard times.
When things improved I picked up a PSA lower then an upper when I got a little more money.
Things are still tight but I'm piecing together another one a little at a time which I'm documenting here. It's a budget build to build a decent 3 gun AR not as cheaply as possible but as value oriented as possible.

As others have said ARs are addictive and like Legos.
I'm building the current one to get exactly what I want and to learn how.

My PSA is a good basic AR. But I'm not thrilled with the stock or the grip. My current build has an ACE Skeleton stock and Magpul grip which I really like. And I currently have an ALG trigger which I may keep or swap out down the road depending on if I like it.

On a side note the cheapest I've seen for a decent AR is via PSA $130 for a lower and $250 for a complete upper for a total of $380!

I bought the parts and assembled both upper and lower. It was a good learning experience.
Now that, to me would be the best reason for getting an AR-15. In fact, I just might do that - sell my factory made (Ruger) AR, buy the parts, and assemble my own. It sort of goes along with my love of assembling my own ammo for everything I shoot - with the obvious exception of rimfires.:)

I now have four after I had to buy a PSA Dissipator upper to go with my A2 Bushmaster Dissipator. I snapped together a PSA midlength rifle last summer and have been happy with the performance so I went ahead with the Dissipator (complete for$500).
I shot the PSA Dissy today for the first time and the only problem was with one 2Amend magazine that works fine in my other ARs. ARs are so cheap right now why not buy one or second, or third.
Also the middle finger to grabbers warms my heart as well.

I have just one.

I first fired an AR in the 1980s and I didn't warm up to it. I got to shoot them again in the early 2000s, but still didn't warm up to them. All were A2 type rifles with the integral carry handle.

I finally bought one because I wanted one before the government said I couldn't have one anymore. I thought I'd like the adjustable M4 stock it came with, but no. I wanted a fixed stock like those old A2s on my 16" barreled flat top. I actually like it that way and I like it much better than my new in the box screwed in barrel Norinco SKS I bought in the early 1990s.

I still would like to have Mini 14 someday. Specifically the 16" barreled, stainless steel, synthetic stocked version.

I have one. I bought an assembled upper. Then I put together the lower. That way I got to learn a little more about it. I like reloading for it and shooting it...so I'm happy.

Nope, not me, I never could get on board the Rubbermaid bandwagon. On another note I just bought me a 6.5 Norwegian krag Jorgensen and a new Yugo SKS

Both of which will easily be out-performed by the simplest AR platform. There is no "Rubbermaid bandwagon" and it doesn't really matter if you accept a superior platform for a given cartridge or not.

Do yourself a favor ... actually shoot an AR in a caliber of your choice ... before you condemn the AR platform.

Just never got around to getting one, I will eventually! ;)
I do have an AK,L1A1,M1 Garland and an M1 Carbine plus a few others, just never got around to get an AR

This is the exact attitude Jim speaks of. Everything is inferior to you AR fanboys.

I am most definitely NOT A AR FANBOY.

I only own one AR. I own it mainly due to my belief that we should be more like Switzerland with a adult head of household (Yep I include women) owning a AR and some preloaded magazines. I built my own AR using higher quality parts so it also performs well as a target and hunting carbine.

My experience with the Mini-14 is based on qualifying with it on a regular basis with my agency at the time and with one I personally owned.

I found the Mini-14 to be very reliable...

but so is the AR.

As I like shooting other types of long guns more one AR rifle meets my needs at the moment...

but a AR Pistol with a 10.5" barrel looks interesting.

I really don't get the AR hatred at all. I like all guns. Yes I know there are some that are not comfortable and such, but..... Plastic? OK whatever, yes I love wood, I mean wood is indeed the most beautiful thing on a gun and even some hoplophobes warm to lever guns and such, simply because of the tree connection. But the dripping disdain is fairly ridiculous if the given excuse is "plastic". Mainly because I know many AR's - including my don't have a whole lot of plastic. Yes buttstock, yes my grips are Ergo rubbery nice grippy "plastic", and the optional foregrip. That's it..............here's is my 10mm SBR DI AR. Everyone who shoots this says: "wow....accurate" and something along the lines of FUN. My mission is not necessarily to get (uninterested) people to enjoy firearms, but it doesn't hurt. Disparaging one platform or another serves exactly what purpose?

.
What's an AR FANBOY (or FANGIRL)?

I don't consider myself an AR Fanboy because I'm not a fanatic (which is where the term fan came from).

IMHO the line is where one starts putting down alternatives, only seeing ARs as "the best" and not considering any other views.

So while I love ARs, I love building them, I love shooting them and I love looking at them I don't think I've crossed the line.

;-)

I do not hunt varmints or enjoy much paper punching. Never had one and probably never will. As to WSHTF we have the largest if not the largest military in the world plus sophisticated network of law enforcement agencies with substantial amount of duplication, therefore restoring order should not be a problem if anything happens. Going against the establishment is obviously out of the question.
Oops! Guess LE / military just couldn't live up to your perceived duties. Small in scale; huge in reason. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/04/0...arges-against-man-who-killed-3-intruders.html

I'm primarily a collector. I'll admit, they are utilitarian but they just seem boring to me. Also, they are too "me too" for my tastes. I prefer AK platform rifles for that reason, functional but a little different. The one exception I would make would be a retro gun, line something from 1965. That would be cool.
