Time for a fluffy thread,

About eight and a half years ago I started carrying a gun for a variety of reasons. I bought my first handgun and fell in love immediately. It's an SP101 in 357 magnum. I carried it in an inexpensive Galco IWB holster and was content.

Then I decided it was time to change my lifestyle and health habits about seven and a half years ago, as I had successfully quit smoking and wanted to continue the trend. My diet changed as did my exercise level. I successfully lost about 50 lbs. Suddenly, I was a pretty thin guy and the natural padding that made carrying a revolver in the waistband tolerable was gone. "Hmmmmmm............ I need a new gun!"

I wanted something slim so I bought a SA XDs in 45 acp as soon as I found one. It rides in the waist band easily, gave me one extra round, and is a great shooter.

This past winter I found myself entering the city on a more consistent and frequent basis and felt that the nature of the undesirables in that city, and the numbers that they typically wander in warranted a shift to a higher capacity gun. So I bought an HK P30SK and carried it OWB in a Stealth Gear Flex holster. I carried that all winter and really enjoy the gun. It has nearly double the capacity of my XDs and is utterly reliable.

When I carried the SP101 back in the day, I always felt I could shoot the gun just fine for defense, but it always beet me up. The reason being was that it had too small of a grip. Well recently as posted in another thread, I put a set of Pachmayr Renegade checkered grips on it. Suddenly, the gun finally fits me as it should and I feel it is a lot more practical for me than it has ever been before.

Lately, due to a change in jobs, I've been at my desk a lot more than ever before. As a result I am in desperate need of woods time for mental clarity and physical exercise. So two or three days a week, I jet out the door at the end of my work day, and go for a hour and a half to two hour walk in the woods. I've been tossing my SP101 in a Simply Rugged pancake holster I picked up a few years ago and been enjoying carrying a revolver again. I don't know why it should matter what kind of gun I carry, only that it works.

However, the feeling is there. I find I just like carrying revolvers for some inexplicable reason. I still prefer a higher capacity gun in the city, and that's fine, but yesterday I went for a hike. The SP101 went in the holster, on the hip, and away we went. I carried it at dinner also. All that sticks out of my shirt is the bottom of the holster below my shirt a bit. You'd have to look directly at it to notice it, and even then it isn't apparent.

Do you just enjoy carrying a revolver for some reason? Can you put your finger on why? I have no explanation for what causes it.

I carry a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt. Why?

Because I'm most familiar with the Single Action revolver, and I can get it into action much quicker than I can with any other type of handgun. And the .45 Colt round is sufficient in power to settle any business that might come up.

And, as to the tip of the holster showing, no one has seen a gun until they have seen a gun. If such a person can't describe the gun, they haven't seen it.

The simplicity of a revolver gives me a high level of trust in the gun. I like the all metal construction of revolvers. It feels more balanced to me. Small semiautos just seem more prone to malfunctions (ok, Sig 238 is an exception) but whether that's statistically true or not I don't know. But perception is important to confidence as one of the "intangible" factors of well being.

Not a race-gun owner, but IMO, any wheel-gun calls back to the days of the
Winchester, derringer, and coach gun.

On a more practical note, that revolver also can load ratshot, for snakes...

I don't know why it should matter what kind of gun I carry, only that it works.
agreed, it shouldn't matter...because it works for You is what is important. Being confident and competent with your chosen firearm.
I gravitate to revolvers myself and relate to a number of point you made 460.

I have the hkp2000sk which is similar to the p30sk. I have 15 round mags and use them for woods carry. That would give you triple the capacity of the sp101.

Actually I can put my "finger on why" - because I'm used to it. And I have a whole lot of years of "used to it." My folks had a small, country store when I was growing up, and when I was 16 or 17, they let me buy a .22 revolver (a High Standard Sentinel) through their store. Ever since, most of the time I've had a revolver of one sort or another behind my right hip whenever I'm outdoors, and I'm 69 now. Oftentimes, if the revolver behind my right hip has a barrel 6 or 7 inches long, I tuck the holster inside the right rear pocket of my blue jeans. Naturally, I can't do that with my concealed carry piece (a .38 snubby) because the barrel's too short. But just like that short barrel, the short answer as to "why" I carry a revolver is "because I'm used to it."
Now ya'll can argue and tell me I need more gun, perhaps a DA/SA semi-auto that holds 15 rounds of 9mm (I already have one) to provide me with a decent level of protection. And you might be right - someday. But I haven't fired even one round in self defense from the revolvers I've been carrying for, lets see - 17 from 69 years equals 52 Years. So thanks for the advice, but I'm going to just keep carrying my revolver. I'm used to it.:)

Really, the beauty of this situation, is that we all have the freedom to choose. Over and over, I tell my shooting students, that the only qualification a handgun needs is, "I like that..." Nothing more.

I am a dyed in the wool Glock guy; they are proven to me. 1911's have a solid place in my handgun history... When I get outside the glow of the Golden Arches, and into the country, I like my 44 Vaquero.... I never thought I would have to explain that to anyone, nor would I ask somebody to justify a carry gun. I can't pick out a pair of boots for you, and you can't pick out a handgun for me...

I own some semi autos, and I appreciate what they have to offer, but autos, polymer ones in particular, feel soulless to me.

There's just something about a revolver. The looks, the feel, the sounds it makes when you open and close the cylinder, when you cock the hammer, when the hammer falls. The whole is much more than the sum of the parts.

Have my S&W model 638 in my pocket right now. I could be carrying another gun. I have a few that are suitable including a 9mm Shield but I shoot the 638 very well, and I like it!!

I hear what you're saying jimbo. Capacity is important.

Typically I carry my 686+ seven shot 357 in the woods in a hip holster. However, I also carry my 1911, my HK45, My P30SK, and will be carrying my Sig Sauer P220 10mm, Wilson 92 Brig Tac, and my VP9, just as soon as I prioritize money for good holsters.

I actually own more semiauto pistols than revolvers at this point. My point in this thread is that for some of us, carrying a revolver is just plain fun, and in some situations I don't necessarily know why. I mean yes, tradition, chunk of steel vs plastic in some cases, reliability arguments, yada yada yada. We've collectively argued those differences many times in the past and in the end we all seem to acknowledge that both types of guns have benefits and downsides.

Fortunately for me, the larges vicious animal I'm likely to encounter in the woods in my neck are people, dogs, and mountain lions. A 5 shot 357 magnum is adequate for my peace of mind, here at least. Different woods, different gun.

My revolver experience has been with Rugers only and I prefer their SA.

I carry my Blackhawk in the woods because it's my hunting gun so I'm gaining familiarity every time I tote it.

As for CC I can't see how a revolver will suit my needs any better than the semi-autos I have now.

I started out many years ago carrying a 4" S&W K-Frame revolver. I have carried one off and on throughout the years but traded off the ones I owned for other guns.

Then about 2 or 3 years ago I picked up a well used law enforcement trade-in S&W Model 10-6 4" heavy barrel 38 Special. It felt really good in my hand. I installed a set of factory magna grips and a Tyler T-Grip and it was a instant perfect fit for me. I sit wondering why I ignored the 4" K-Frame for so long.

Today due to the situations with terrorism and mass work place shootings my primary edc is a Beretta 92FS carried iwb and a spare magazine on the off-side hip. But if for some unimaginable reason I had to give up my handguns and only keep one handgun this Model 10-6 would be one of the leading candidates to keep.

I started carrying a S&W Model 38 in my coat pocket when I took the dog for a walk in a less than ideal urban setting. I liked having the shrouded revolver there as I figured it would work okay if I didn't have a chance to draw it if I carried it in a holster. Also figured a semi-auto wouldn't work at all beyond the first shot as the slide would snag on the pocket lining.

Revolvers and reloading go together. I have grown to favor revolvers because of their flexibility. I reload a lot of .357 and .44 mag cases, with loads ranging from light target loads to full power hunting loads. I have found that new shooters like revolvers, especially when loaded light. I have semi-autos, but I really prefer shooting the wheel guns.

I switched back from a Sig P938 to a S&W 640 for summer carry* because I can't find a decent holster for the former. I don't feel like I'm really missing out on anything; the ballistics are similar and the 640 has a laser sight, so I'm content. If it's a pocket carry day, I do the Sig, but that's rare.

*Winter carry is either a compact 1911 or a CCO 1911.

IMG_0661.JPG I always liked Revolvers best. I tried semi Autos and carried a few. For the last bunch of years the semi Autos have been in the safe ( only Two left). I have been carrying Snub Revolvers. Normally Two J-Frames at a time but, I have a couple others to substitute if I feel like it.

My God - if you can carry a 92FS iwb, you must be a monster of a man!

I'm just a revolver guy. Don't get me wrong I have semi-autos and I prefer full sized 1911's. just to big and heavy for carry gun.

I've always liked the revolvers too. One reason...that's what I started with ( probably '62 or '63 ). Another reason...I reload and I like to have the brass stay where I put it...not scattered all around.
