.41 Mag Association

I bought a 6" Model 57 back in the mid 70's.... Had a Ruger 41 mag before that, didn't like the way it recoiled, so when the Smith came in, before I even shot it, I sent it out to be Magnaported. Even though the Smith doesn't recoil the same as an SA, its is a move I do not regret.
I tried the Sierra 170's and 210's if memory serves me... the 210's shot better...

All I shoot with it now are 215 gr hard cast lead with trail boss for plinking...

My first magnum was a 4" Nickel 57 that I bought back around 1980 . Later I bought a blue 58 and then a nickel one . Then a 6" 657 . My interests changed in the 90's and I sold them all . Bad move and regretful .
Finally , many years later , I'm back . Picked this up yesterday . Appears new and with the blue hard case . I checked the serial and it looks like it was made about 1998-99 .
Hoping I can return to the Association now ?

Welcome back to the Association guy sajer,
Your 657 Mountain Gun was a 1999 "Stocking Dealer Exclusive". I am not sure how many were made but they do not come up for sale very often.

KO, it looks like the new Henry will shoot, I will be curious to see just how well when you have more time to play with loads.

Have you picked up a big loop in 41 yet? I've got one sitting next to the bench, business has me going crazy with little time to shoot :(

There were two .41s at the gunshow this weekend, a Ruger Redhawk and a S&W 657. There was a nice 4" Colt .357 with correct grips as well. That one (Blasphemy, I know) was tempting, very tempting. But I resisted them all and came come empty handed. No gun money right now. :)

Just went by a local LGS that had tons of reloading stuff someone pawned off on them. Lee Carbide .41 magnum dies for $35, plus a fully operational Lee Turret with dies and power charger (in .44 Magnum) for $20. And a second Turret with dies and powder charger in 9mm! Whole shebang for $64, tax included.

I have spare turret so the .41 becomes operational, my .44 Magnum setup becomes a .44 Spl., and the .44 Magnum I bought is set up for REAL magnums. The 9mm.... dunno, I already have that set up!

Oh, and I saw a Ruger 'backpacker' .41 yesterday. 2 3/4 inch barrel. Unfortunately they want $999 bucks!

The big loop Big Boy Carbine was the one I hoped Henry would make when the first announced they were going to make a .41 Magnum lever rifle. Picked it up today.
Out of the box the front sight was to the left and rear was to the right, got them both pretty much centered now.
Ordered my H006M41 online a few weeks ago when they started showing up in stock, and my local dealer put in an order for the H006MR41 several months ago and it just came in on Friday. What are the odds of this happening.....I got the same two digit serial number for both rifles.

Last group from 50 yards.

I'm with you (and probably thousands of others), who are leaving Photobucket and heading elsewhere (I'm switching to imgur as well).

Really like the .41 Mag Mountain Gun!

You have to love the stainless mountain guns. Has anyone seen the blued mtn gun? Picked one up on GB a few months ago, haven't had a chance to take it to the range.

For those interested ive been playing with loads for my Henry Big boy steel in 41 mag, Right out of the box its a 1" stack em up with irons at 50yds rifle, But finally got ahold of some 190gr hornady Ftx bullets, Loaded with 21 grs of H110 75Deg 300ft elev, out of the 20" barrel 10 rounds 2025 FPS average and accuracy was one ragged hole. This will be a potent Deer load! Only thing with this bullet i noticed is you MUST Crimp or it will not feed properly at all!

The .41 Mag has always been a very interesting cartridge to me and without a doubt my favorite revolver cartridge. I've had a Blackhawk .41 for a while but recently decided to pick up two more .41's, a S&W M57 and a Ruger Super Redhawk .41. The SRH .41 is still on layaway but I picked up the S&W a few weeks ago.

What other loads are giving you that kind of accuracy?
My Big Boy Steel is more of a 2" - 3" group at 50yds gun.

Nosler 210 with Imr 4227 load of 18grs is 1"to 1.5" off the bench, Biggest help is turning those buckhorns into regular flat rear sight, Im getting ready to make a peep for it to try out this sept.

I fired a new-to-me Redhawk .41 today. I found it languishing on a police supply store rack unloved, apparently the previous owner was found to be a danger to his ex-wife by a judge and he was ordered to dispose of his ample and eclectic collection. It was originally priced at $600.00, but after three months there were no takers. The guy was in need of money (probably for lawyer bills), and I finally talked the store clerk down to $375.00. (I had earlier purchased a CZ 550 American in 6.5x55 with a nice VX-III Leupold on it for 600 bucks from this same collection..this gun, too was practically brand new and well cared for.) There still remains a Super Redhawk .480, a 7x57 Win M-70, a Win M-70 in 325 WSM, and another rifle that may have been a Rem 700 .375 H&H, but I ran out of there before seeing too much of that one and buying yet another gun.

The Redhawk has the 7.5" barrel, and was practically unfired. No trace of rust or pitting was seen, and the cylinders were about as clean as they can get on the inside. The owner had a gold-bead front and a V-express-style rear sight added, other than that the only other deviation was the original wood grips had been replaced with rubber Hogues. Since .41 isn't all too common, I ordered up 1,000 Starline brass and 1000 Missouri Bullet Co. coated 215 SWC's. I loaded 100 with 8.3 gr Unique and WLP primers, which was a load that I found to be accurate and very easy to shoot.

The only issue was an occasional light primer strike when fired double action. A bit of research after the session led me to see this wasn't a rare condition for Redhawks. I want to avoid sending it in for a longer firing pin installation (It's pricy and cosmetic damage to the frame can happen from the pin removal), instead I will remove about .020 off the upper part of the hammer to increase the impact on the transfer bar. If this doesn't work to make this gun 100% reliable, I will bite the bullet and send it in to Bowen or another good 'smith to do the firing pin alteration.

I must say it kicks less than my S&W 629's with 240 gr SWC and Unique, but I also think I loaded these .41 rounds down a bit. I will try about 9.0 of Unique for the next 100 rounds and see where it goes. (I don't have a chrono yet to see how fast they are moving).

I must say that I am now a fan of the .41, I just wish there were more stores that carried it on the shelves!

Wow, your lucky day. You did good.

YA, like I said it sat for at least three months untouched. 99% of the customers in this store are new cops buying their M&P/Glock/Kimber/Sig duty and off duty guns, and most aren't gun aficionados like I am. I walked away from it twice, but the .41 Magnum allure just kept calling.
