Good Morning THR Forum,

Can someone clarify the process for me on renewing a cpl in Michigan?

To my understanding...
1. You can apply to renew your CPL 6-months prior to its expiration.
2. You need to bring $115 check to the count clerk office with the application.

(now here is the confusing part..)

3?. You tape the receipt of your application fee to your old license?
- Even if its not expired.
- Keeps you active until you get your class time (3 hours + 1 hour range).

4?. Take the Class / Range Time?
- are you supposed to do this before you apply for a new one?

5. Destroy the old one once you get a new one?

All comments welcome, I'm just confused on the actual process / time frame...
- Seems a little loose to me?

Thanks,
Ron.

I renewed in Michigan a few months ago, I did a class I think before I renewed but they do not ask to see the certificate like for my original CPL. If I remember correctly all I did was fill out the form I printed offline and went to the clerk, handed it in and paid. new Licence came in the mail. I did this before my original expired. Go online to your county clerk, the info should be there.

I renewed in MI spring 2016.
  • go to the michigan state police web page http://www.michigan.gov/msp/ . Search for CPL renewal for an overview.
  • While on the MSP page, search CPL application. fill out the application online and print it out. Saves time at the county clerk's office.
  • Bring your licence with you to the county clerk's office.
  • At the county clerk's office, you will have to sign a form stating that you have spent at least one hour on the range in the last six months and have reviewed the training for 3 hours.
  • Pay your money. I think I used cash, but don't remember. They would have taken a credit card but would have charged a few extra dollars. I'm not sure about checks.
I lost track of time and let mine lapse by about 4 months. It didn't make the paperwork any more difficult. I was legal to carry with my receipt + expired license until the new card arrived. If I had renewed before the old license expired, there would have been no need to carry around the receipt. The old license would still be valid.

My new card got lost in the mail. Several weeks after I applied and did not receive a card, I returned to the county clerk's office to inquire. Then I had the new card about a week later.

Destroy the old card? I punched a hole in it and locked it away with the old, expired passports.

I chose to take the class again at my range. It wasn't required, but that seemed like the easiest way to meet the "study the laws" requirement.

Expect a long line and short office hours if you are in Wayne county.

1.yes
2.or cash
3.only if your old one expired
4.you do not need to take any class only revue MI laws if your old one has not been expired for over a year / range time can be anytime you shoot in the last six months
5.new one is not valid until old one expires

I renewed for the first time last year. My license expired in April 2017, so I applied for my renewal 6 months prior.

The only tricky part was that when you get your new license, it isn't valid until the day your old card expires, so I had to make sure to switch cards on the renewal date.

With a driver's license, the new one is valid immediately so you can switch licenses as soon as you receive it in the mail.

Did it take long to come in the mail?
- Originally it took like 4-6 months for my initial application to get approved...

Surprisingly, it only took about 2 weeks to receive (Ingham County,) then I had to sit on it for 5 1/2 months. I set a calendar event on the day to switch cards in my wallet.

Another surprise, they used my driver's license photo on the replacement instead of the original 'passport quality' photo of my original. The only thing is that they distorted the image horizontally. I'm not exactly a lightweight, but now I look like William Conrad from Jake and the Fatman.

That just makes sense. You paid for a 5 year license. If you renew early, why should you loose several months if the new license takes effect before the old one expires. I recently renewed mine and I and I'm good til Feb. 2022.

It's nice to see all these Michiganders.

A coworker just renewed his CPL yesterday. He was concerned that he had to 'lie' on the form about the class time and shooting time. I looked at him confused. He said that he called the instructor of his class but he didn't have a three hour class to refresh on.
I asked him if he knew it was a felony to lie on state paperwork, which really got him worked up.
I let him worry for a minute, then I 'scolded' him for not listening to our instuctor or reading the section on renewal in the information packet we recieved.
Our instructor is a local detective and put together a very good course. In which he told us that review of the course material would suffice for the class time. We shoot much more often than the average bear, and with our children and his wife, so the range time practicing strict safty is a non issue.

My license is in need of renewal next year and I had planned on bringing the info packet as proof of review but it seems I won't need to. You know how the officials are, they like to make everything sound more important, daunting and egregious than it is.

Have a good Michigan morning!

(Edited for bad proofreading.)

No, it really doesn't make sense. On my driver's license, it only has an expiration date, so when I get a new one I can carry it immediately and not worry. My new CPL has both an expiration date and a valid date. It is not valid until the date that my previous license expires. If the license only had an expiration date that was five years out from my old expiration date, this wouldn't have been an issue.

Since I shoot in my backyard almost daily.... do i need to take pictures of it?
- Just wanted to make sure.

If you can honestly say you have met the range requirements, check the box on the form and don't worry. The whole renewal process has been very streamlined since the elimination of the county gun boards. The county clerk isn't going to make you prove you've reviewed your training materials from your original class, and (s)he is not going to make you prove you've met the range requirement. You just sign the renewal form under penalty of perjury.
