I've seen how the muslims make musical instruments. They dig a trench in the object and then lay in a line of inlays, gluing each one in place before inserting the next one. I suspect this is the same technique used here.
 
Having spent 5 months in Egypt.....I agree. The jewelry was excellent and I have purchased several pieces that I had appraised here for 3 to 4 times what I paid. Back then by Egyptian law,,,,they only sold 18k and had a government stamp mark. But I have also seen beautiful inlays in Indonesia and Spanish countries.
 
Nice looking. Appears to be a shallow groove cut into the wood, the inlay glued in place and then filler to take up all the voids between the inlays. Then the whole piece is sanded flush. Gives me ideas for some of my wood projects.
