Yesterday I found .30-40 Krag brass in the spent brass bucket at the range. 10 rounds. This seems extremely unusual to me as I would think that most rounds chambered in firearms that have not been commercially available in decades would be of interest, for shooting purposes, to those who reload, unlike the more common finds, such as .222, .308, .270, and .30-06. As I have 2 Springfield 1898's, I will put my find to good use.

Just seems rather curious to me, and hence this thread.

Now all I need to find are a few dozen .50-70 Government discards.

Finding .50-70's would indeed be rare & a great find! But .30-40 Krag is not so rare & ammo is readily available - at least here in Texas. I see cases left at our range every so often. Midway sell brand new Rem Krag brass for $56 per 100.

Havent found any krag brass here yet, tho ive seen a few krag shooters. They get uppity when u get near their pile of brass, so do the .375 win guys...My feathers ruffle when folks get near my wierd brass to tho.

Oddest brass ive found has been 357max and 25auto

"....30-40 Krag is not so rare & ammo is readily available..." Both brass and ammo is only loaded "seasonally" by Remington and Winchester with no mention of what season that is either. Readily available it ain't. There are constant requests on all the assorted forums about where one can find .30-40 Krag ammo or brass.
Midway shows Remington brand (only) as "Unavailable - Limited Production". No ammo in stock at all. Graf's is currently showing their own brand at $42.99 per 50 though. PCI brand ammo only.
Anyway, you have no idea what has been done to or how often it has been done with range brass.

In my experience, range brass tends to be either once-fired stuff (or so it appears) by those who don't reload, or obviously well used stuff probably discarded by someone who does reload.

I found a full box of 257 Weatherby Magnum cases put neatly back in the box recently. Also 20 rounds of 458 Socom brass and occasionally 50 beowulf. 9, 40, 45 and 223 by the bucketful.

Wish i could find socom brass here, i know guys that shoot it besides me, but no one stocks ammo so they horde their brass.

A few days ago someone left me a box of 300 WSM brass and a hand full of 300 RUM

The only problem is I don't reload it. Heck, I've never even heard of those cartridges.

I didn't see the guy who shot the 300 RUM. :uhoh:

I usually go to the range during the week when the brass rats are working. I find all kinds of strange stuff in the brass bucket.

Regarding the found 30-40 cartridge, please remember that several years ago Ruger chambered their single shot No.3 rifle ( and possibly their No. 1 rifle) in this caliber and that brass may of been from one of those Ruger single shots. Just a thought.
