Thanks MidlandMan. Today, after shooting it again, I took it apart. I encountered the 5/32" allen bolts on the mag plate/stock mounting screws and the 1/4" allen bolts that hold the trigger and barrel clamp down. I had watched the U-Tube "how to" videos and still managed to tinker it back together. I did not remove the ejector from the barrel as I could clean the barrel with it in place. The rifle was not really that dirty so I don't intend on doing this that often. Next time I will grease the threads on those screws. Cross threading the bolts can sure destroy the receiver of this gun.

it get easier as you take it apart and put it back together its pretty simple plus I have been to gunsmith school years ago and on any semiautomatic they supposed to be cleaned every 250rnds as when it does get dirty it will start having issues plus I wanted to tell you that firing pin is a floating pin and just slips out of the bolt if you pull that hammer back the round piece that's spring loaded pull it back just a tad and lift that firing pin out so you can clean it! anyway if you need help feel free to either comment here or pm me and i'll help you out! ;)

Thanks! I'll do that. I had all the right tools. I also cleaned the receiver with a shotgun brush wrapped in T-shirt with a little Hoppies, then dried.
Funny my wife hates the smell of Hoppies, but it's like perfume to me!

former girlfriends grandson had a 64. i bought it for him at gander for christmas one year. could not load more than 5 rounds at a time without it jamming, turned me off in a hurry.

E-Mailed Savage arms about the magazine problem and a nice lady from customer service said I could have a new magazine or send the rifle back to them for service. I chose the mag as I had lots of summer shooting to do. If problem persists, will send it back for the winter.

heres what I did as the springs bein new are a bit strong I lock that bolt back in that recessed spot in the receiver then as far as the mags take and load them fully and throw them to the side somewhere safely and just let them sit when not in use! this way it will soften those springs in the gun and those mags and make it work a lot better! just do that constantly for a while each time before and after each use and once those springs loosen up you will notice it will work much better!

The new clip arrived yesterday. I noticed they had given the clip a feed ramp that was semi polished. As if they had hit it with a 3/16" drill bit at the proper angle.
At the range today I was surprised to find the new clip was worse than the original clip. Five or more rounds would all jam the bullets at a steep angle into the top of the chamber mouth and just hang there.
I loaded both clips with 7 rounds and put them to sleep in my ammo box for an indefinite period.
Savage has but one solution to the problem as I see it: Supply the gun with two 5 shot magazines! :)
For the price I can't complain any more. The rest of the gun works just fine.... go figure!

If a person is dead set on spending no more than 99 on a rifle, then yes, no right to complain. And when your local stores who are selling better firearms go out of business, so that all you are left with is 99 dollar rifles, then still no right to complain.

Hopefully the rifle is available elsewhere... there is just no good reason to buy firearms there. BTW did you enjoy being escorted out with your firearm as if you were a possible criminal?

This isn't exclusive to Walmart, many firearm retailers do this, especially big box stores.

lock that bolt back as well when not in use as it will soften the springs a bit and load the mags plum full to when not in use and it'll help soften the springs as it has helped mine! and I been shooting mine more and more with the full 10rnds and mine has gotten to where it even works with hollow points so I believe they send the rifles out with the springs a bit strong but as they soften up it break in it will get better! :)

I don't think a $99 .22 will bring about the end of the world.

The gun shops I see around here seem to do plenty of business, while Walmarts have cut back on their gun inventory pretty drastically. They'll still sell you a cheap .22 or 30-06, but not much else.

Pfft, my local Walmarts carry at least 12 models of firearms and the associates don't know one end of a rifle from the other, how can you possibly expect a gun store to compete with that?

A new Savage 64 does take a bit of breaking in like other semi-autos and like many .22's has particular ammo preferences. I also strip the shipping grease from new firearms and then regrease/oil as necessary before using including the bore and chamber.

I use CCI Stingers (except during the great .22 shortage) or similiar high velocity .22 cartridges for my semi-auto .22's and have fewer problems than using something like Thunderbolt or match type ammo. You can also use crocus cloth to polish the feed ramp on the mags as they come from the factory quite sharp.

I have one gun that cost over $2K (a 50 bmg) and a few Winchester 22's. The Savage 62F for 99$ is well worth it in accuracy even with a 5 round clip. If I play my cards right I may wind up with a third magazine.
Thanks Midland!

Local gun shops that close down do so due to many different reasons, nearly all of which are directly related to their business practices. Things like over-pricing, failing to adjust to changing "gun climates", poor or impersonal customer service, or simply flooding the market are responsible for the demise of far more LGS operations than is a nearby grocery store selling a couple of .22 rimfire rifles for $99.

I have never had to wait more than a few minutes.

I don't think any of the walmarts around here sell guns. they sell ammo but I have seen next to no 22 ammo, although they seem to have plenty of other calibers.

The one in Morris used to sell rifles, but I haven't been there in quite some time. They used to carry the usual stuff; 10/22's, 870's, Mossbergs, whatever sold the most I guess.
