Assume I know nothing about AR15s...

I have had nothing to do with this mans addiction, I can't even remember his address. :neener:
Yea yea sure sure as I sit here looking at the growing pile of AR parts thinking of that black and red AR you build for you son. Thinking one similar in Red, White and Blue would be cool. (But not very practical now)
Wondering if 300 Blackout or 6.5 Grendel should be next
Thinking FDE and olive drab look good on "black rifles"
Knowing this is just the entrance to the rabbit hole as I reallly have to get some powder and load some more ammo or all of this is just an exercise in building fancy artistic pieces. Actually, I'm trying to figure out which powder to try. I won't mention to OP that reloading is as addictive as building ARs and has what seems like as many possibilities!

Armoredperson if you are still looking for an entry level AR, Grabagun has a sale "today only" on a Del-Ton Echo 316H Lite.

$369 + $7.99 shipping.

As Mosin Bubba wrote it's about as low end an AR as you can get. No sights, no ejection port cover and no forward assist, but it's $200 cheaper than the S&W M&P15 I bought only a year ago.

Like you I found AR options overwhelming and decided on the S&W on the basis I had to start somewhere. No complaints. On the first time out I was shooting 2 MOA groups with just its iron sights (which the Del-Ton does not have, but there are all sorts of AR sight options).

The S&W M&P15 Sport II would still be my first choice for an entry level quality AR. You can easily find that model today for about $450. (S&W's model designation is 10202)

I don't think there has ever been a better time to purchase an AR. Best wishes.

Also today (July 25), Midway is selling a kit (everything but the stripped lower) for $330. It does include a port cover, forward assist, and front sight; you'd need a stripped lower and a rear sight, and the patience/skills to put together the lower. I don't need another AR, but I'm tempted all the same ...

I didn't need another AR 12 or 15 ago.
Add this TN Arms polymer lower for $29 (free shipping) and that's just ridiculously inexpensive.
I've built four rifles with TN lowers. I had trouble with the last one I built. The space between the front pivot pin hole and detent hole were out of spec. They replaced the lower and everything is fine.

Don't over think it. You won't know what you want until you know what you want. And you won't know what you want until you spend some time with one. At this point, I suspect a lot of this is meaningless jibberish to you.

Problem is, I recommend what I think is important to me. My thing is ultimate accuracy and a really good trigger. That may not be at the top of your priority list. My wife buys cars depending on the cup holders. Seriously. Priorities and all that.

So why do I want any of those things? Remember, zero AR knowledge. I'm the CZ guy. :) Why is a mid length gas system desirable as opposed to the carbine length? Why the nitride finish? Why new take down pins? I really don't know any of the questions to even ask to begin with a new rifle. My service rifle was an M-14, for crying out loud. :) But seriously, thank you very much for going into detail on your build. just wish I knew what it meant.

Why is a mid length gas system desirable as opposed to the carbine length? Reliability and more versatility with ammo and supressors.

Why the nitride finish? Reduces need for lubrication, handles heat well, increases reliability.

Why new take down pins? Easier to use and stay in.

You're younger than I, how a was your rifle an M-14? Shipboard duty?

A bit off topic but the M14 and it variants MK14 "EBR" are still in service today, I believe many of the M14 rifles were brought out of storage and back in use today,

Sprooooing indeed. The ARs I notice the sproing with have rifle stocks, either A1 or A2.

I haven't really noticed the sproing with adjustable carbine stocks.

For the heck of it, I finally ordered a flat wire spring from Tubbs. Just to see if it will dampen the sproing in my A1 stock. Not that I need to, its just that I'd like to.

I was basing that on his last time firing an M16A1 in '84. (Basic?) The only M14's in Army service at the time were actually M21's, but I do know M14's were issued for shipboard use, for repelling boarders, I guess would be the official use, but sailors I knew back then mostly shot flotsam for target practice. Yes, of course I know many were pulled out of mothballs and converted to DMRs.

so true I have been thinking of picking up another and I already have 4

I'm building a third, and honestly will probably buy some more mags after that. Now is probably the time to stock up on all things "scary". It sounds like the Dems are doubling down in their leftward drift, having decided that they took a too centrist approach in the last election (no idea how they came to that conclusion, but I've heard several commentators and guests on NPR state as much, seems to be a trend). I'd expect the assault on gun rights to be kicking into high gear in about 3.5 years tops, and ARs are always at the top of the list.

In the district next to ours in SW Va the guy whose fiancé was the reporter killed near Roanoke live on TV is running for state Delegate on a gun control platform. He's said he's not avenging her death and he's not trying to take our rights away, but he sounds like carpetbagging Tim Kaine and Terry McAwful who can't open their mouths without saying how horrible the 2nd Amendment is.

To answer the M-16/M-14 rifle questions, the M-16A1 was with ROTC in Ft Huachuca, but the M-14 was shipboard in the Navy. Not to repel boarders - we have plenty of other firepower for that. It's because 5.56mm doesn't have enough oomph to throw a line for UNREP, STREAM method. Need a 308. Only 3 were full auto, the others were factory semi auto M-14s...the kind DCM will never be allowed to sell. Heck, we had 4 Ruger Service Six 38 Specials in the Armory, with no explanation. Also I did "work" on the M-16A1 in Gunner's Mate "A" School - they didn't waste new rifles on people like us, who would likely see them walking past with SEALs, not in our Armory. :) BTW the funniest use I ever saw for an M-14 was sinking the "killer tomato" giant floating orange square target - the moron on the 3" 50 main guns, (roughly 76mm), couldn't hit it at any range, and we sank it with rifle fire, because we had no more time to fool around.
I was at my favorite local gun shop, On Site Shooting in Casa Grande, and got to handle some different AR styles, which leads me to say I like the PSA Freedom setup with the MOE style hardware better than that milspec version. They agreed this is the time to grab what you want, as the prices are unbelievable.

Another pic of the Nikon 3X scope mounted on an AR. Nice little scope. Good glass, not great glass, shows up in low light.

OK so seems both you and the Armored farmer have it protruding just beyond the charging handle. Makes sense now. I was setting it up so that my nose was near the charging handle as when using the iron sights, but if I pull the scope back a bit and extend the stock by another notch, it seems to fit me much better.

So do I, but when I hit "reply" to let him know, I was able to see the photo all of a sudden.

Weird. I can see the photo using that method as well. I'm not sure what happens with photos around here, but depending on what I name the photo I've noticed a photo will become a red x. I'm not talking the web address either, just the name of the .jpg file seems to cause issues at this forum on occasion.

In this case I believe I linked to an old pic from before the software change. They show up as a red X in a post, but show up if you "edit" a post, then dissapear when you save changes.

Fixing some of the threads with lots of pics in The Reloading Library of Wisdom was a royal PIA. :)
