Unfinished Wood on miltary stocks?

Not all WRA buttplates are stamped S2
Post a clear up close picture of the front and back of your buttplate and I'll take a look at it
I am still learning something everyday about Garands. The day you stop learning is the day you die

On another note ... is anyone aware of a way to get the skin oil stains out of a wood stock?
Only way ive ever found is sand the crap out of it. Mostly ive dealt with spilt gun oil i think as its usually around the action or trigger guard.

Here's a few pics. My plate seems to have a distinct border but I'm starting to think it is a SA plate. My trigger assembly was given to me by the collector who has the 99+ % Winchester so I'm pretty sure it is correct. My psychotic computer wants to post it upside-down. Sorry. The punch mark on the front sight is visible just ahead of the dovetail. The gas cylinder lock screw is the proper early type, but I suspect it is a reproduction. The rear hand guard is a Springfield part. The clearance cut for the op-rod is obvious. Retaining clip should be milled and it isn't. That part is going to be hard to find. My rear sight assembly needs the proper windage and elevation knobs. Oh well, restorations can take time

buttplate is SA, hard to tell from the pic but the aperture may be WRA. Would need to see the sight base disassembled, pic taken from the side to see if its WRA. Op Rod catch pic taken from the top or bottom

The aperture is Winchester. They made the "thick" type. The front surface is slightly more sloping than the SA. Rear sight base is rounded on the bottom, it is a Winchester. My follower rod is a stamped long fork, riveted; should be flat, and milled. The barrel and receiver appear to have left the factory together. It has the Winchester proof mark and the gas port area is not chrome plated. I don't have an erosion gauge, but the bore itself is very good, with no pitting and sharp, clean rifling. I have a long way to go on my restoration.

Here's a little story that will make you scream "stupid" . I found the gas cylinder, with front sight attached, years ago at a gun show, for $55. The guy had two of them.

I didn't buy the other one. Been kicking myself ever since!
