Question on which 1911 you'd suggest for women (wife's Bday present)

I paid a hair under 800 for mine, new, this past week.
I'll take a set of dovetailed Novaks over staked in GI sights with dots any day.

Why? You can't even rack the slide one-handed using rear sight, useless.

You know, I've never had to do that at the range once in my entire life. Considering we're talking about a fun gun for the range, again, I'd take the nicer sights for their sight picture not which one snags on my belt easier when I'm fighting the filthy hordes at my door.

My carry Colt Commander has a rear sight I can use for that purpose. Admittingly, I don't drill that skill very often.

Well, whatever you get needs to resemble what she likes.

Which gets complicated in some of the Armscor and RI offerings, as maybe a positive grip safety bump, or an extended mag well might be cool features, but might not float her boat.

People like what they like.

+1 on Colt. Colt is making some of the best quality in the history of the company, according to the serious 1911 people. I agree, and I now have 4 of them. If you can stretch your budget, get her a Colt Competition in her choice of calibers and finish. Or any Colt, even the baseline 01991, which is a fine gun. You can use future gift occasions for upgrades as needed/wanted.
My 2nd choice would be the Remington, which is in your budget. Even the base gun has a beautiful finish and good sights.
3rd choice would be Springfield. Good guns, and only #3 because they are not US-made.

Now that I think about it, all my 1911s are in these 3 brands. I have had others - CD, Sig, Taurus - but I haven't kept them. Well, I do have one Llama ;)

She is going to probably have this pistol a long time. Get her a keeper.

I'm not sure by what the OP said if it was the 1911 his wife liked or the 10mm cartridge in the 1911 she liked. Was it that particular 1911 or would a similarly nice 1911 do?

If you're going to spend $700 on a gun she won't like you are wasting money unless you do like Homer Simson and buy your wife a bowling ball with your name on it lol.

I know $1000+ is a scary thing but don't make the mistake many new shooters make by buying a gun because the price is low. Buy the gun that makes you happy and cry only once. I'm really curious about the questions I asked at the start of this post.

the OP never said a thing about a 10mm. Nor do I see any benefit to having a converted 1911 to another cartridge. All the was stated was his wife liked the colt delta elite and he couldnt..or didnt feel comfortable affording it.
All the caliber conversation/conjuncture was a series of different opinions from people simply based on their own fancy.

I thought all of the Colt Delta Elites were 10mm?

they sure are. to be fair there was some grey area in the OPs question she had shot the cold delta elite and liked it. but due to not wanting to deal with the price tag decided to look at other 1911s. and that's the real question...what 1911 is for a better price is what it seemed like.
So that's my interpretation of why 10mm was not part of the actual topic. If he wanted a gun comparable to the delta elite...i don't see why it wouldn't have been phrased in the question if it mattered.

What is opinion, if not based on personal fancy. Forums are for opinion, else we would all be reading books at the moment. Facts are nice but sometimes humans wish to have conversation, usually based on experience, which varies greatly.

SR nineteen eleven in ten millimeter. She will love you for thinking of the family finances and saving three to four hundred dollars, for ammunition, with which to spend time with her.

Getting a fourty five auto may be taken as an offense, as if she couldn't really handle a ten.

Anyway, that's my opinion. And worth what was paid for it.
Good luck @Terrey Thompson I'm sure you'll do fine, after all you listened to her.:)

Been watching this thread... and thinking. I've owned, sold/traded off, an AMT Hardballer (The first run 70s jamamatic), a Star PD, a Series 70 Colt Government and a Colt 1991A1 stainless. The latter I had to sell to pay the rent a couple of months after I got married. If I were looking for another I would seek out a Colt stainless, and would not pass on a minty low mileage used gun. My 3 cents.

I agree with Cpl. Agarn. Whatever make you choose make sure it's a 9 MM.
Lot easier for a women to handle.

Zeke

So, Zeke, tell me. Your wife test drove a Buick, with a turbo six cylinder. She loved it. The power, the response the way it looks, everything. She wants nothing but that car, in red.
So you tell her that you will get her a four cylinder, because "as a woman, it will be easier for her to handle."

Really?o_O

And if so can I be there to watch?

Just switch positions in this story. Your wife is buying you a 1911 (something based on her opinion and priorities). You want want the Colt xxx in 45 ACP, she buys you a YYYYY in 9mm. Are you happy? BUT .... she saved some money. Think about it. Also, don't pick out jewelry for a woman either

I would say a Ruger 1911 in 10mm is very close to a Colt Delta Elite (MSRP is only $80 less, though). I've shot the Ruger 1911 in 45 and thought it was just as nice, if not better, as my Sig 1911. And it is also stainless, if that is a consideration.

Next step down would be a 10mm 1911 from Armscor, AKA Rock Island Armory. Not quite as tightly fitted, but still an accurate, reliable gun.

Rugers generally sell a good bit lower than MSRP. I dug around the other night & found a SR 1911 in .45 at Lambo's Armory for $675 and some change. They had the new 10mm SR 1911 for $745. I just looked at Buds Colt Delta Elites are going for about $1000 and up there.

FWIW I don't think the OP is trying to deprive his wife of 10mm or a Delta Elite. I believe he is just trying to get as nice a pistol as he can afford in a caliber they can afford to feed.

I always get a kick out of these" what gun should I buy my wife" threads. That goes for other things already mentioned like jewelry and cars and I'll thrown in things like furniture and appliances too.

If it is to be for her, let HER pick it out. It makes for a happy wife and that makes your life happy. I give this advise from over 58 years of marriage to the same woman.
