TEXAS!
Saw this Remington 700, polymer stock with some kind of black 'crackle' finish in 7mm-08.

Nikon 'ProStaff' 3x9 40mm scope. Decent shape, no real wear. Scope looks good. $300 plus tax. Maybe $350 in all.

Is it a good buy? I don't see that kind of finish on 700s any more and Google just won't cut it.

Thanks,

If you want a bolt action rifle in that chambering, and it's in great shape, it's a good deal. Even if it's an ADL model.

[That scope with rings (used) is usually between $100 and $150. New it's $200 with rings and cover.]

Check on the 'crackle'.
Many composite stocks (including aftermarket) come with that pattern in the material. Good.
If it is a paint someone painted on, it might not be so good if the paint starts peeling off.
That would not be good in my opinion. Use your own good judgment.

Of course, the ultimate test is whether it shoots straight. You only know for sure if you shoot it.

Bad cerakote job? Maybe? It still sounds like a good deal. You could take some fingernail polish remover and try to see if it comes off. If it does, it is probably paint based. The 7mm08 is a awesome round.

Is the crackle finish on the stock or on the barrel and receiver?

$300 sounds like a heck of a good deal me if it's not in the gun metal!

I agree with ants, the crackle finish on the stock would lead me to suspect that it may actually be an aftermarket composite... Which usually start at about what they are asking for the rifle. Of course it could be a polymer stock with a textured home paint job. Something too check on if you go check it out again.

Barrel and receiver. Not on stock or bolt. I think it is factory made. Did Remington ever use anything but blue on their barrel and receiver?

Here is a photo of the actual gun.

Gang, I bet this was a Walmart 700 ADL! They are on sale for $377 right now. But whomever owned it put the ProStaff scope with steel rings and base. Fine with me. It looked almost perfect to me in the store.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Most 700s are good shooters out of the box. And the 700 action is one that you can build on in the future if you are so inclined. I say shoot it and see how it does.

And we'll need a range report of course ...

That's a 700 SPS. It's a factory textured stock. That gun new is $514 on Buds. The pic on Buds its kind of hard to see the stock. But trust me, that's the gun.

$350 for that gun and scope is a good deal.

And I just looked up the ADL, it looks the same with scope for $407. But it doesn't state if it's a Nikon or not. I suppose it's possible.

That doesn't have a 'crackle' finish. SPS' comes with a black phosphated finish and a synthetic stock now. There are aftermarket stocks with it though.
"...a Walmart 700 ADL..." No ADL 7mm-08. No ADL's after 2004. I think the Wally World rifles are M783's. MSRP on those is $399.

I bought my two grandchildren (a boy and a girl) a youth Remington 700 in 7mm/08 when
they were little. They each killed an antelope, the boy killed a bear and both killed a
couple of deer. Then they moved on to bigger sized rifles. The 7mm/08 is a fine cartridge.
It's not fancy it just does what it's supposed to.

Remington still makes ADL's for Academy, Walmart and Cabela's so I'm sure they make them for other big retailers too. That sure looks like an SPS stock. I've seen new ADL's for sale with SPS stocks, I think it was at Academy.

Doesnt matter. If the scope works it's a good deal, it and the action alone are worth more than the asking price IMO.

Looks EXACTLY like mine in 270 purchased at Wllmart several years ago, $330 minus scope.
Same matte finish, same stock with pebble texture at the grip and fore end.
The bolt sounds rough when you run it up and down the receiver, and the hollow stock magnifies it.
But crummy stock and all, it drives tacks every day I shoot it. Heckuva bargain rifle.
In a chambering easy to shoot and not too expensive.

Like any used gun, inspect it carefully! If all is good, get it.

Ok I got it gang. $325, tax included. (actually $324.75... got back 25 cents.) It has a floor plate that opens so I guess it isn't a ADL. 24 inch barrel.

Phosphate finish! Ah... now I know!

Oh, and this gun is subject to the Remington recall (trigger problem). Remington has already sent me a mailing label to cover the cost both ways.

I'll shoot it tomorrow, post info, and then mail it back to Remington.

Have you checked the bolt release tab in the trigger well? If it has a dimple from a punch, it's good to go

No, not Gander. A little pawn shop that had it marked down (been there for years.) At $300 I could not resist!

I do alot of business with a pawn shop as well. You can get good deals, you just have to be patient.

Ok with Federal 'Fusion' 140 grain ammo I got 1 1/2 groups at 100 yards today. Didn't have cell phone so no photos!

First three shots at 25 yards were one hole group. Did a few clicks up and a few to the left and then the 100 yard shoot.

Now clean it tonight and send it off for a trigger fix!
