Lotta flashlight options, either as strikers or to temporarily blind.
In my truck I have a 3 cell d and a 3 cell AA maglite, and the little ones goes with me in my luggage when I travel.

Home Depot has a variety of AAA pocket flashlights over 300 Lumens under 35$.
I use them when I go to Canada. Very effective, also multi-purpose. A great all around travel tool. I also travel with the Leatherman Surge, but I haven't been to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or Alaska.

You might consider useful items that can be pressed into service as expedient weapons. I have, for instance, carried lanyards with a heavy carabineer on one end, and either my keys or a sturdy small flashlight on the other, through almost every flight I've taken in the last 18 years.

Braided paracord is very strong, and a 3 strand braid is wide enough to not burn you as it slips/flows through your hand. This is one of the most practical, low observability expedient distance creators you can have, but be advised, PRACTICE is mandatory. Before I carried the lanyard, I always wore a sturdy belt and had a padlock on my carry-on bag. In either case, you have useful items that can fill other roles unless you need to use them defensively.

Like a heavy item like a rock or battery inside of a sock?

Or just a sturdy belt and a padlock on your carry-on bag. And, I only ever suggest stuff that's just generally useful...padlocks are useful when you're traveling, and I usually find belts useful, too.

We'd look pretty silly plopping down to pull off a sock when a padlock on a bag comes off very easily and snaps onto something sturdy and flexible. ;-)

So you don't carry a back up sock and battery in your pocket?
You are no boy scout Sir.
