rebarreling a savage axis-what cal?

I haven't converted an Axis but I have converted a Stevens Model 200 (Savage Mod. 10) short action from .223 Remington to .243 Winchester and then to .308 Winchester. It wasn't that difficult. The parts I had to change were barrel, bolt head, forward baffle and magazine. BTW, I have a sporter weight .243 barrel and an E.R.Shaw heavy barrel in .243 to sell.....
how hard was it to swap bolt heads?

Ohio huntrer,I don't know were you live at in Ohio, but ther is a guy in Clendenin WVa on Facebook trying to trade an Axis in 308 for one in 223..I saw it on the Roane County sale site..If he is willing to meet you half way it may not be anymore thanan hours drive for either of you,if you live in Eastern Ohio..I will send you his name if you want..He has a picture of it on there, and claims it has only been fired a few times

Don't forget, it is very advisable to use the appropriate headspace gages when you are changing bolt heads/barrels to make sure that your combo is headspaced properly. You can either buy them or rent them from places like reamers4rent etc. Some work for a family of cartridges depending on what you select. Also make sure that your magazine length will allow a longer COAL for proper feeding-not familiar enough with the Axis to know whether they use different lengths for their actions other than short/long.

I found the er-shaw barrels come with the gauges for about $200.

I'm in Cleveland so roane county is pretty far for me. I have family in roane and Jackson county so know the area somewhat. I will probably end up doing a er-shaw barrel because it comes with the gauges and what not and if I every want to switch back to 223 I can. thanks for the info.

swaping bolt heads is easy, you just take apart your bolt and put the new head on guides are available online.

what city? kentuck, fair plain and kenna is where we go all the time. you could be a family member of mine HAHAH. it takes me about 3hrs or so to get to Ripley.

Axis, Stevens, Savage 10, 11, 16 it doesn't matter it is all the same. It is like legos in re-barrelling version.

I tend to gravitate towards simplicity for an all purpose rifle and with this towards current or past service cartridges or close derivatives from it.
The 308w can be loaded from 110gr bullets all the way to 180gr even 200gr to tackle the largest game. whit the 110gr-130 can handle also hogs
and deer with similar trajectories and effectiveness as a 243, 260 given average ranges. A 130gr solid bullet will hit like a 270 at the average distances.
But it also gives the possibility for inexpensive practice and heavy and long range bullets where the 6mm and 6.5mm will come short in momentum.
Perhaps in terms of ballistic performance the most efficient of all will be the 7mm/08 that can launch small bullets form 100 gr all the way to 175gr
with superior reach and better performance than any others at long range.
I think the 243 is great but it is an over-bored cartridge and efficiency is lost. Perhaps the most efficient 6mm cartridge is the 6mm BR that with the same
bolt face and less powder does a lot of things.
I think the 308 cal and 7mm would be the most versatile and best barrel life. Also scary accurate both of them.

One thing, buy a quality barrel. Factory barrels savage makes are up there with the best in terms of consistency.

Koon and Williams here. good friends are fields and casto out that way too. spent a lot of time at woodrum lake as a kid.

I have an old savage axis 223 regular barrel I'm playing with the idea of putting a 243 barrel on it. has anyone done this? how did it work out? I would like something I could possibly deer hunt with but also use for cheaper target practice and varmint shooting with lighter bullets.

what other calibers would you guys recommend?
Ever consider rebarreling to a 17-223? It's a dream of mine to have cheap brass in a 17 caliber.
