Which Glock to Buy...for a guy who has none??

19. Best all around 9mm made IMO.

After you get a 19 you can branch out from there.

I only have one Glock and it's an very early Model 17. Just bought it mainly because I was fascinated by the then new polymer frame design and technology. Still have it and works great as a range gun.

View media item 51This is my baby, gen 3 17L. I got it new in the box last year and have run a few thousand rounds through it so far. It is very accurate and I either carry it or my 17 IWB. View media item 52 I'm 5'8" 260 and have no problems concealing either. I'd like to get a 19 sometime, but my 17's do what I need for now.

If this were a general purpose or carry pistol, I'd say the G19. As a pure range gun, I'll suggest something in full-size: G17, G17L, G21, G34, G41, etc. I've never shot most of those pistols, but I really don't see any reason to get anything less than full size for range fun.

I did this....bought a glock just to say I had one. g26....nice gun, utterly useless. To fat to conceal carry, to short in the grip to enjoy shooting at the range. Sent that junker down the road and replaced it with a Shield.

I also at one time picked up a G20...wonderful gun, but at the time I didn't reload so 10mm wasn't in my budget. Sold it and I'd love to have a G20SF for hunting but I have a few more purchases before I start hunting up one again.

There's nothing glock makes in "normal" calibers that appeals to me, so it really didn't take me long to decide I didn't need a glock to prove I'm a serious gun owner. I suppose my biggest problem is my ego wasn't big enough to fall into the "glocks only" trap.

Lol. To each their own, but I found the shield utterly useless. To skinny to grip well, too big for a pocket, doesn't conceal better enough than a 26 to justify the lost rounds in the mag. Also, I hate the trigger, even with APEX.

Range Glock, thy name is Glock 34.4 or Glock 35.4.

4th gen G34's are ruling range games all over the nation. Get Warren tactical sights, gen3 guide rod adapter, gen3 SS recoil rod, wolff 15# recoil spring, Agency arms magwell (for stock mags), Dawson ICE magwell (for TTI extended mags), use the largest beavertail grip. Medium striker spring, and a little polish, some 2000 grit sanding, and you have a pistol that's as good as anything out there. KT makes nice OWB holsters for the 34/35, but I recommend using a 41 holster instead. Just about all Glocks will fit in a 41 holster.

Glock 41 is also a fine choice, if you feel like shooting a .45.

Sounds reasonable. I'm taking notes.

There's no magwells available for the G41 though. And never use aftermarket trigger springs in any Glock.

If 9mm mags don't drop free, you can shave them down. Usually a simple set of calipers will show why they aren't dropping free. (plastic is, as plastic does) I've never had this problem with .45 and compact frame Glocks.

I have owned or shot almost all of the small 9mm pistols. The G43 is my favourite.

Whatever model # is the full-sized 40 caliber, that is my FiL's favorite pistol atm and it is easy to shoot well.

I would vote for the 17L as a range toy, though.

19, because it is no bigger than it needs to be.

ETA: One of my favorite pistols of all time. The others are the S&W Model 10 and the Browning Hi Power.

The 17L with the 16" barrel is my every day EDC.

I would probably lean towards the glock 40. I have a gen2 glock 20 but I know 10mm likes the longer barrel.

All out full blown range gun = 34

Now, one thing to consider is a 23 or 35. Why? Because they can be converted from 40 to 9mm with just a barrel swap. Can't do that with a 17/19 or 34. Not a bad deal and you have a very versatile pistol. Truth be told 40 mags don't work great with a 9mm barrel so you'll want caliber specific mags.

I have no idea how many rounds I've ran through my 40-9 barrel but I am completely confident in its reliability as long as I'm using 9mm mags.

Get a 34, since you aren't carrying it , it should make a fine range gun. You can always add some fun things to it down the line. Maybe an RMR. A lot of guys who did a lot of work in extermination love them. The extra weight is nice in front as is the distance between sights. They also can be hidden well if necessary.

I carried a G19 for years. We upgraded to the Gen 4 a few years ago, and I bought my old one.

I later bought a bone-stock G34. I picked it up on a Friday, cleaned it, and shot it Saturday am in a local LEO competition against other guys shooting various Glocks, S&W M&P's, Springfield Armory Xd's, 1911's of various makes, etc. I finished first in the expert category, winning by an X-ring count over the second place expert shooter (If I remember correctly he had a really nice 9mm 1911...). I am not a great shot, but I immediately found out the gun hits where you point it very well. I have carried that gun daily since, and all I have added since then are tritium sights.

Give a G34 a try at a local range, I think you'll be happy with how it works.

I have several Glocks. If I were you I would go with a G17 with a 3.5# Ghost connector. And maybe a 6# trigger spring to replace the OEM 5.5# spring. Enjoy!

Well I need to update this post about my G17. I've had it a few months and added the 3.5# Ghost connector. It shoots great and I was very pleased with it. It is definitely my favorite Glock.

I recently added a 6# trigger spring to replace the OEM 5.5# spring. Yesterday was the first time I've shot it since changing the trigger spring. I was shocked to find that when I pulled the trigger it fired 2 rds. in rapid succession! Wow, wasn't expecting that!

I tried it several more times and it continued to fire 2 rds. each time. Since the only change was the trigger spring, I brought it home and changed the trigger spin back to the 5.5# spring. I will fire it again soon and confirm that it is operating correctly. I will update again if changing back to the 5.5# spring doesn't solve the problem.

Never had a Glock and never really wanted one except the G20. No one else was making anything in 10mm quite like it with that capacity to size. I never bought a G20 over the years because the grip size was too big. But the move to SF and Gen 4 fixed that for me and I finally got a decent deal on a Gen 4 last week. Can't wait to take it for a spin at the range.
