Nomenclature Clarification: Action Length

It is unfortunate that so many erroneous statements have been made when it was clear that facts were presented to discourage such embarrassing utterances. Clearly, the 308 fanchildren have taken umbrage with their "long action" propaganda being slapped down.

Until the advent of the 308 family, the x57, 30-40, 303 and 30-03, 30-06 cartridges informed the standard length of the bolt action rifle. Historical and chronological fact. Subsequent to the arrival of the 308 family, a shorter than standard, aka short action, became practical.

There, are at most, a handful of batu hunters aux Etats Unis, for whom the marginally shorter bolt throw of the short vs standard length action could possibly matter. And perhaps for Tommy Tactikewl and his mates shooting "mad minutes". There is nobody for whom 3-4 oz weight difference alone is material. If 3-4 oz matter, your rifle decision is not simply standard vs short action

There are excellent reasons for the varied choices one makes about firearms and cartridges. Pretending that 3-4 oz in weight and maybe a half inch of bolt throw constitutes a valid, let alone excellent, reason is absurd. And continuing the erroneous and purposefully misleading propaganda of "long action" can only be done in the face of the fact that it has been demonstrated as such and that doing so begs contempt.

One hopes these clarifications have been edifying for those who have been laboring under the misunderstandings addressed here. For those purposefully using misleading statements, you have been corrected.

That is all.

Gads. I do wish the forum software could automatically detect for and select when a good old fashioned smiley face emoji was needed so we wouldn't all get quite so riled up by folks looking to yank chains and pull legs -- whether consciously or unconsciously.

There's arguments we need to have. And there's arguments nobody, anywhere, needs to have.
This is one of those latter cases.
