Am I the only one who can't find 30-40 ammo?

Here ya go...in stock...
Thanks for the link! Way cheaper than what I paid! I guess I will have to go online for my ammo, at least if I want to shoot my two Krags very much. I have recently determined that my carbine is, indeed, an actual N.R.A. Carbine, converted from a rifle by Benicia (hope I spelled that right) Arsenal back between the wars, because the NRA had trouble selling Krag rifles through the old D.C.M Program. Everyone wanted carbines, so the NRA contracted with the Benicia Arsenal to convert rifles to carbines. That organization was more than happy to get the business, as they were desperate for any kind of work after the end of the Great War. According to Mallory and Olson, they did around 20,000. The dead giveaway was the 1903 Springfield Front sight. Mine has a 96 Receiver, a Late 98 model rear sight and a new barrel, along with that 03 front sight. A typical cobbling together of whatever parts were available..It has no arsenal re-build stamps, which was another hallmark of the NRA carbines. The determining factor in my carbines authenticity was the fact that it shoots exactly to point of aim with that 98 sight set to the lowest adjustment. This took some range work, and some whittling down of the front sight by the arsenal workers. They did a magnificent job.

It shoots like a dream.

What? Stupid reply. He didn't use a 30-40 Krag. How does that relate to this question? Sure theres anti gun issues from that but not on old calibers. It would effect the common .223, 9mm more than anything that was used.

I think he was referring to the fact that after the shooting spree alot of older cartridges went by the wayside so manufacturers could focus on the money makers. As far as 30-40 Krag, the smaller stores seem to have a couple boxes, at least in my area.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. The ammo shelves changed forever, or at least for a long time, after that fateful date.

The Krag is only loaded seasonally by Remington and, at one time, Winchester with no indication anywhere by anybody of just when that season is annually. Been like that for eons.
Graf's is currently showing Remington 180 grain SP's at $35.39 per 20($33.62 per box if you buy 3 or more boxes) and their own brand of brass as available at $42.99 per 50.

If you want to avoid online shopping, you may be able to get Cabela's to ship it to your local store (if you have one locally) for pickup. I know you can do this online and have it delivered to your local store for free, so I don't see why they wouldn't do it in person because I have always found Cabela's to have great customer service with odd needs. I'm sure other big box retailers may do it as well since they all have an online "ship to store near me" option.

Found five boxes today. One place had three boxes for 49.99 each, and another place had 2 boxes for 65.00 each. I passed, almost passed out too!

Back in the 70s and early 80s it wasn't uncommon to see sporterized Krags in the woods around here...(northern NY). They were family guns and what they used, but now long since retired. Likewise, the 30-40 cartridge...while still a great performer in its limits, has firmly been pushed to the wayside and I doubt any new rifles have been chambered for it in years. Times have changed and so have gun fashions, few folks n0w (relative term) care to take one into the woods. Even sporterized, most are in collector status. Mine still shoots fine with the 180 grain Remingtons, and I will be happily reloading for it once I get a few more cases

FWIW, you reloaders, you can run .303 British case through a Krag die and make perfectly serviceable .30-40 rounds with them. Neck will be quite a bit shorter, but still plenty long enough to firmly hold the bullet in place. NOTE: Do NOT try using .303 British ammo in a Krag. The Brit round is loaded to significantly higher pressure, and the slightly oversized bullet would exacerbate the problem. Could well lead to a catastrophic failure in a vintage Krag or Win '95.

About a year or so ago I got a Ruger No.3 in 30-40Krag and had heck of a time finding brass or bullets for it although the person at the gun show that I bought it from thru in 21 casings of WW brass. I finally struck it rich so to speak at a local gun show and picked up some factory loaded 30-40's Remington Peters much older ammo, and 40 unprimed WW cases at the same stand. I believe I paid right at about $75.00 for the whole kit and caboodle. I managed to get some reloading dies from Midway in Hornady brand and the rest is history. BTW I'm always looking for 30-40 brass just to be safe. I've tried using British .303 brass however I just don't care for the accuracy of the finished product, don't believe I'm getting the proper grip from the case to the projectile, and my Chronograph shows quite a difference in velocity also. Just prefer the proper casings.

Perhaps on the east coast 30-40 is found quite regularly, however out west it sure as heck isn't. too many other more common ammo is available.

I was surprised the local shop near me had half a dozen boxes. I asked him Y? He has a guy that comes in from time to time and buys it. Otherwise he said he wouldn't bother with it.

Other than Ruger, has any other rifle maker produced a gun in that cartridge during the last 90 or so years?

A .30-40 Krag Springfield sporter was my first high powered rifle as a youth. I bought a nicely sporterized carbine from the Jicarilla Apache nation about 15 years ago. It is a handy cartridge but, let's face it, it has been upstaged by the .308 among others. Still, along with the .45-70, it just keeps going on.

Collecting World War One rifles, a Krag came to live with me.

No ammo. Found some commercial ammo at a gun show for $2.00 per round. I have a box of Winchester ammo from long ago - full patch bullets, no less - a collector said the OPENED box was probably good for $150.00. I didn't shoot those either. Graf and Sons has brass sort of 'on demand'. I bought 100 cases and probably should have bought more, but...

No one makes the 220 grain round nose FMJ, either. soft points are available. Powder and primers are no problem. Lee makes dies, someone mentioned Hornady, too. Probably others.

Nope, the rifles, carbines and ammo just are not as popular as they was once. The combination still kills North American game (maybe not the large dangerous bears) very well, indeed. Too much emphasis on volume of fire and ultra high muzzle velocities.

NOTE: Do NOT try using .303 British ammo in a Krag. The Brit round is loaded to significantly higher pressure, and the slightly oversized bullet would exacerbate the problem. Could well lead to a catastrophic failure in a vintage Krag or Win '95.
That's not a worry, as a .303 round will not chamber in a Krag rifle. The shoulder is too far forward. Bolt won't close. But you are quite correct that serviceable 30-40 rounds can be made from .303 brass.
Winchester 95s were chambered in .303. and 30-40 and even 30-06. Only the latter chambering was considered a bit marginal as to action strength.

Back in early 90s a gun store was going out of business in Columbus, Ga. I guess I got 30 boxes of it. I packed it away in a 20MM can and as I remember the boxes fill the lower half. Also got 100 new unprimed cases. Never had to go into it as I have enough 30-40 brass "out" to keep me going. I know in the 20MM can it is good for at least 75 years.
My Krag is a cavalry model and has been rebarreled with a cut down 308 target barrel and contoured to original and Remington 700 irons were put on it.
When I got it, 8" was what I could expect at 100 yards. Seems dirt dobbers had built nest in it before I got it and it was very badly pitted for about 3" at the muzzle end.

Here's another ammoseek.com recommendation. I looked real quick and they had over a dozen different places that had 30-40 Krag ammo.
