I am looking for feedback on a Traditions #FR18512 (made by Pietta) 1851 Navy Black Powder Revolver chambered in .44 caliber. I realize that an authentic reproduction 1851 Navy Revolver would be chambered in .36 caliber (as Wild Bill Hickok and many others would testify), but I am leaning towards buying the .44 for several reasons.

1) I already have an 1858 Remington cap and ball revolver chambered in .44 caliber so I figured that would keep my BP handgun shooting more simplified than adding one in .36 caliber. 2) The cost on the Traditions .44 1851 Navy model is hard to beat for a steel framed revolver at about $215. 3) I am only shooting for recreation and my own enjoyment so having an 'incorrect' revolver chambering does not bother me.

Has anyone shot the Traditions P/N: FR18512 revolver? Does the larger caliber throw off the balance and feel significantly? I imagine that eventually I will find a steel framed .36 caliber 1851 Navy at an agreeable price and get it just so I can see for myself if it is one of the best balanced and most natural aiming revolvers of all time to shoot, but as seldom as I have a range day featuring BP shooting, I figure the .44 version will give me a taste with plenty of 'bang for the buck'.

I had a Pietta Navy in 44 for a few years and, after handling one in 36, sold it and replaced it with a 36. The 51 frame and grip is smaller than the Army frame and grip which, in the Navy, felt better balanced while shooting it in the 36 caliber.
YMMV

You obviously are not hung up on the historical correctness of the caliber, so go for it. I'm confident you will enjoy it.
For what it's worth, Cabela's has had several Black powder revolvers on deep discount sale around the November/ December time frame for several years in a row. Many of us are eagerly waiting to see if 2017 will be another repeat.
You just might find the 44 and/ or 36 1851 well under $200 out the door and delivered.

Thanks for the replies.

Waiting for the November / Black Friday type sales is a good idea, but ... my nicest shooting weather, and the time I usually get out the BP, is generally during the month of October. And ... I have a couple of hundred dollars saved up for it now.
I may go ahead and get the .44 caliber 1851 Navy now, and keep my eyes open for a great deal on the genuine article .36 caliber in a couple of months. Guess I just realized my mind may already be made up!

il.bill - That is the way to think. You can NEVER have enough guns!!! If your wife complains, explain that it is like jewelry, shoes or purses and watch the light of awareness begin to glow in her eyes.

Where are you finding them at that price?
Cabela's will usually have their 44 brass frame 51 Sheriff on sale for $100 to $150. Cheap easy way to get a short barrel 44.

I am sure you will enjoy the 44. Get the 36 when you have the chance. I have several revolvers in 31,36 and 44 both Colt and Remington and enjoy them all. It's a lot of fun and I am amazed at the power and function of this old design.
Post a pic when you get your new gun.

one copy of everything is my motto......................., still working on it, lets see now
Need:......................................

I think the OP specified a steel frame, and I am thinking he is looking for one with a 7-1/2" barrel as he is concerned about the balance.

My post wasn't very clear.
I'd buy the full length barrel steel frame gun. Then come November - January buy a brass frame short barrel confederate Sheriff version on sale at Cabela's. Then he'd have a short barrel for his steel framed gun.

Nice looking 1851 .44 Navy! Some decent color case hardening along with some nicely figured grips.

Where'd you buy it?

LGS - ended up costing $225 plus tax. State of Illinois classifies black powder revolvers as regular firearms (that is also the case for pellet guns >.177 caliber!) so the rules for transfer are the same as if you bought a Glock 19 or a S&W Model 500.

I escaped from IL in 2010.
Bought my 1st house in rural Missouri.

Did you have to do a 4473 on the gun?

No, but Yes - "the rules for transfer are the same as if you bought a Glock 19 or a S&W Model 500." A non-licensee must do a 4473 and background check with three day waiting period. I did not, since I am an 01FFL dealer and purchased the cap & ball revolver from my own shop as a Licensee (still had to pay the sales tax, though).
