Handgun shot load for rats?

I saw a review of CCI .45 ACP shotshells. The reviewer, if I recall correctly said they pattern tight and cycle the gun. All I can suggest is Google and see if you can find out.
Well, I know they'll "cycle" my Smith 1911, but "pattern tight" must be must a relative term.:)

Definitely relative :), I googled it and the first hit was a well done Youtube review. () Perhaps I should state it this way: Big enough payload of 9 shot to pattern densely enough for the purpose, well at least 10 ft. Definitely better than ones I've used in .22 or .44.

When I lived in an urban setting, I used the 38 plastic bullets in a 6" barrel 357 and could kill rats, squirrels and collared doves out to 25', very quiet, light pop, sounds like cap gun, but very effective and fun. I averaged over 30 dove a year while living in a subdivision with no neighbor complaints. The collared doves are an invasive species, larger and tastier than the American dove

It has been my experience that handgun shotshells produce about 1 inch spred for each foot of distance.
Rat at 10 feet, pattern would be about 10".
Patterns tend to be doughnut shaped too.

I like shot loads for snakes, but hunting rats might be a cahallenge.

The use of Speer pastic bullets ot even wax as suggested above might be worth a try in a revolver.
They do hit pretty hard and possibly could kill a rat out to about 30 feet.

I have used rat shot/snake shot in .38 in my Rugers. GP 100 has 4" barrel. SP101 has 3" barrel. The pattern out of the 3" barrel does not kill a snake at 6 ft, but the 4" barrel pattern does.

I ran across an article titled "America is on the Verge of Ratopocalypse" at the New Republic via Fark.com, and it made me wonder what a good shot load (from a pistol) is for rats.

I know bigger is better, but there is something to be said for small and quiet too. Would 22 shot be effective, or would it just make them mad? Would you have to go to 38 Special shot, or all the way to 45 ACP (that's the biggest revolver I have)?

I have never shot a rat, so I have no idea how tough they were. My father told me he used to shoot them at the city dump where he lived with a 22 Short High Standard Model C, but shot would seem preferable to bullets in an urban area.

I guess I am just daydreaming about this, but I'd still be curious to know. Thanks!

No such thing exists except perhaps Taurus Judge or S&W copy called the Governor. There is next to useless toy shotgun caliber made for Ratopocalypse called .410 bore. They actually still make 2.5" target shells that would really work on them rodents.

CCI Ratshot is available for most calibers. I like them in my .44, for snakes.
They get it done, at close range. once you get further out than 5 yards, effectiveness
begins to take a back seat.

Never had to use anything other than an air rifle or pistol, .177 or 22 work just fine. Had a rat gnawing in the house crawl space years ago and one shot was all it took. I was, and still would be hesitant to use any of the .22 rim fires on rats anywhere near a residence..
Many years ago we had a feed mill close by and it was a fun evening for several of us to take air rifles out there. We didn't miss too many and the local LEOs would often join in. with an air rifle. The feed mill owner loved this and actually encouraged us to organize weekly shoots. Good PR with the LE and adjacent property owners
