I found an ammo can full of .429 180gr JHP brand unknown (possibly Sierra?) and want to put some together for my 629 Classic.
I have Unique, 296, and A#7 on hand. Anybody have any favorite recipes, NOT max thanks.
I usually carry 240gr SWC over unique for my woods walking, coyote plinking loads but if I can get a good 180gr load I might switch.

If you're not wanting max loads, then lay off of the H110/W296. You don't have to run 100% max loads with it, but you really can't reduce much, and 'reduced' H110/W296 isn't really reduced...

The other options you have at hand should be serviceable. I might avoid Accurate #7 and #9, simply because they chew up a lot of powder compared to Unique and 231 to get very similar results - getting to 1200-1300fps should be somewhere on the order of 10grn 231 or Unique, whereas it'll be 15+ #7 and even more on #9. I've used boatloads of #7 in 32H&R, but that's about the extent of where I like it, for that reason. They're typically very accurate powder(s), just not as fast as H110/W296, and doesn't go as far as 231.

I used to play with the 180 Sierra Sportsmaster, and less so with the 180XTP. Personally, I've preferred 240-330grn bullets in the 44mag, but the 180's do ok on game at moderate ranges as well. The 180 Sportsmaster over 10.5grn HP-38/W231 was a very well behaved load in a 6 1/2" 29 - just a touch more than a starting load. One hint - it's not listed as such, but the Lyman manual has a 180 "JHC," which is the Sierra Sportsmaster bullet - page 377 in the 49th.

I have a thousand 44cal.180g JHP, I believe Sierra. I bought them many years ago and never got around to working up a load for them. So I can’t be any help but I will be watching this thread for suggestions.
