Would you buy a pistol to fit a holster you owned?

I would not, but only because I do not have the funds. Having said that, a Combat Commander is my favorite handgun.

why not. sounds like buying in the reverse order. holster first then the gun. actually any excuse to shop for a gun is good for me.TIME TO GO SHOPPING, I HAVE A HOLSTER THAT NEEDS A GUN.

That's putting some real onus on a holster we know nothing about, nor can we do more than assume it has been tested by you. Too much "if" without qualification and some of those questions have been asked with no need to pile on.

I cannot claim to have always walked away from senseless buys, but I'm making an effort to scrutinize my spending far more than before, most recently eschewing new rifle purchases to invest in upgrading several I already own. My advice; throw that holster back in the unused box and forget about it. If in six months you happen across it again, you probably didn't want to fill it that badly.

Wouldn't buy a holster for anything. I'd make it.
Anyway, the only difference between a Commander and a Government Model is 3/4" of length. They're the same height and width. As long as the bottom of the holster is open a Government Model will fit into the same holster. Sights matter somewhat.

Would you buy a pistol to fit a holster you owned? I have a very nice cross draw holster for a1911 Commander size pistol, but I do not own any Commander size 1911s. So, would you?
If I needed one yeah but I wouldn't buy just cause I had a holster nor would I buy a holster without a plan to buy the gun.

Well, cowboy77845, my father did exactly that. On one of his deployments, he had acquired this magnificent Wild West style gunbelt and holster. Probably too the orphan chained to the table who carved all the detail into the leather weeks to do it. Anyway, he wanted a western style pistol to go in it since it was going to become part of the decor in his home office, so he went and bought an Italian made pistol that looked the part, stuck it in the holster and I think its still there, four decades later.

Of course I've never owned an accessory so nice that it demanded its own firearm, but it can happen.

I bought a used gun BECAUSE it came with a beautiful El Paso Saddlery holster. It wasn't that the holster was anything special other than the fact that it came from El Paso Saddlery but to me, that is special enough. Even today, when I have that gun out; if someone is with me, I show off the holster.
At the time I bought it, I spotted the holster first and looked at the holster first. I bought the gun only because it came with the holster. The gun is a very fine gun and I enjoy it, but the odds are, I would have never just bought the gun.

FWIW: the gun itself is a S&W Model 629, 3" barrel.

Given that I tend to wind up with between 3 and 4 holsters for every handgun I own, yes, it's tempting to fill them all

I have managed to resist that urge somehow. Probably good as I have either five or six M-1936 flap holsters for 1911s.
I also have three dedicated Officer's Model holster--I'm not quite ready to go buy two more. Mostly. (I I saw one in electroless nickle . . . )

To the actual point of the post, no, I'm tolerant of having a bin of holsters and carry gear. Same as how I'm willing to try new carry gear, and keep buying it until I'm happy, too.

Geez, and I thought I might be the only guy to buy a holster (a 1940s Hungarian military for a Femaru 37M) and about a year later I got a 1943 Femaru 37M pistol to match. Boom!

Yes, I bought Colt 1911 rail gun to fit my Galco FN5.7 holster. Fit very gut. The holster is very nice and the pistol very reliable, but the ugly tan coating looks awful:barf: and wears off rather easily. To put it mildly the finish on the gun sucks big time.

Well....I've bought rifles because I already had bayonets for them....so why not?;):)

So, we're related somehow :)
Still debating whether I'm better off for having sold off my Navy Lee sword bayonet and Enfield bayonet in the dar days after 2008.
Ruh-roh--I have three M7 and a pair of M9 o_O (and the LE6920 has a lug, but bayonet is not a nice fit.)

"Ya own more'n one pair of drawers dontcha?" Thats the argument I use at my house......I just hope she doesn't find the other two drums of holsters in the basement!

I do not use a holster much and have not really found any that I like, so, I'd probably not buy a gun a to fit a holster that I had in my holster bin.

Ammunition, brass, bullets, reloading dies, bayonets, history, etc., etc., etc., sure.

I've almost done that.....I have an empty holster for a Walther P38. It's dated 1943 and has all the Nazi markings. One of my late uncles brought it home from Nordhausen Germany in 1945 with a German Luger in it. I inherited the Luger and the holster and I've always been fond of Walther P38's and a few years ago found a 1943 dated P38 with all the correct military stamps. It was in decent shape and at a fair price but someone beat me to it. It's still tempting because they made a lot of P38's in 1943 judging by how often they turn up for sale at online sites. Any old excuse to buy another gun, right?

Finding a really nice holster is a real pain so TBH maybe finding great holsters and then finding the guns to fit them isn't the worst idea. I've never found a holster I liked for my SP101.

1911's are timeless and you're not gonna have a hard time enjoying even a Commander frame.

I bought a rare enfield(RIC carbine) to fit the common p1888 bayonet I inherited.... did the same for a p1907 bayonet...bought a Enfield NO1 MK1***

Wartime P-38s have much in common with 1911 of a similar era.

Some are rattletraps that really want to work together, but sorta don't.

Some, the parts are somewhere between tight and sloppy, and work reliably.

Some are just fit together just right and are a dream.

Most of the negatives you hear are people who picked up one of the first two kinds.

Most of the positives are from folk who piced up one of the last two kinds.

I don't have the first clue how to tell one from the other in a P-38. I sort of have a clue with 1911. But, only sort of.

Many of us do. So, instead of looking for holsters for the gun, it's a search for a gun for the holster.

On a side note, I've got a Blackhawk holster that fits 4 carry guns, right now. Covers the triggers nicely, on all of them.
