I got a star on my car and one on my chest
A gun on my hip and the right to arrest...

If you break the law, you'll hear from me, I know
I'm a-workin' for the State, I'm the Highway Patrol...

-Junior Brown, "Highway Patrol"

I was minding my own business, wandering through one of the gun shops here in town on a rainy afternoon, when what should catch my eye but an early 1970s S&W Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman. Now I have a thing for four-inch barrels on a revolver and I didn't have an N-frame, nor a vintage pinned and recessed S&W. This one looks good and locks up tighter than the proverbial bank vault and the price was reasonable - so I am now the proud owner of another classic Smith & Wesson service revolver.

They are great guns. I have had several but foolishly let them go

The one I regret selling the most was one that had British Proof Marks. I found out is was a fairly rare gun.

One of the best service revolvers ever. Quite controllable with hot magnums and when loaded with .38's turns into a real pussycat.

Here's to N-frame .357s. Mine's a bit newer, though... and a treat to shoot with standard bullet-weight commercial mag loads.

Congrats on your acquisition of a classic! : - )

So that's your story and you're sticking to it?

My thoughts exactly! He just happened to be out and about and purely by chance came across this sweet Model 28 that he just had to buy. He didn't have an N frame and has a thing for 4" barrels and the gun itself is vintage S&W and it checks out fine mechanically and by golly the price was right...

Yeah I would go with the "minding my own business" story too.

Howdy

Nothing like a Model 28 for shooting 357 Magnum. I have three of them, two with the six inch barrel and one with the four inch barrel.

I found this 28-2 a few years ago.I believe it was made about 1973. It has been refinished, with kind of a bead blast finish to mimic the original dull polished Model 28 finish.

Shoots great, and it is comfortable to shoot with full magnums, and yes it is a pussycat with 38 Specials.

I was, I swear! Umm...it jumped out of the case and followed me home? It looked sad and lonely and needed a good home? When did I get that one, honey? Oh, a while back...

Have one that was issued to me almost 40 years ago. In the mid 90's when the department began adopting the wonder 9 mm's. I, and a few others, were "grandfathered" and allowed to keep and carry our original issue. Still have the original box and ppwk.
I had another exactly like this one I picked up a couple of years ago that I recently sold. The condition of that one was a little better but this one has a lot of sentimental value.

Sentimental value will always win out over better condition. Your Model 28 is definitely a keeper and certainly lives up to your THR member name!

Great find on the 29-2..Even with the little "Miss-Match" on the grips..Bill.

Great gun, you are going to love it. Its recoil is much softer than a K frame. The muzzle blast will be the same! You will get fireballs out of that 4" barrel, don't forget, wear plugs and muffs!.

"I swear! Umm...it jumped out of the case and followed me home?"

"Personally, I believe it, because it has happened to me too. It happens, really it does, it's a documented fact. Too many "witnesses" who swear it happened to them to not believe it."

One of the upsides of divorce (an amicable one!)

Here's mine :)
Dad used to have me run interference to distract Mom while he snuck new guns into the house......we'd use the same technique to smuggle more old motorcycles into the garage. Looking back now, I don't think she was fooled for a moment.....

Probably not. My Mom use to have this "sixth sense" about stuff like that whenever my brother and I were up to something!
