I will probably be getting a used Mossberg 500 ,20 gauge with the rifled barrel tomorrow, and I figure it would be a good "Truck gun" because it has iron sights..I think they must only shoot saboted slugs, but I'm not 100% sure, and I also don't know if it would do any harm to the barrel if I was to shoot shot thru it...As you can tell I am not very informed about shotguns,so any info any of you shotgunners can give me will be appreciated..Thanks

I think you skipped a word? Shooting through a barrel will not hurt it typically as that is what their intended purpose is?

My Mossberg 500 20 gauge with rifled barrel is almost MOA with Accutips, that thing would be a slayer if I hunted in a shotgun only area.

Shooting shot loads through a rifled barrel accomplishes two things, neither of them good; 1. The rifling spins the wads, causing blown-out and useless shot patterns, and 2. fouls the rifling up even faster than sabots for slugs do.

If you want a "truck gun" that allows for shooting both slugs and shot, you can get a smoothbore with rifle sights on it. Just buy rifled slugs, not sabot slugs. Most smoothbore barrels will provide good enough accuracy up to 75 yards or so, which should be good enough for a truck gun. And obviously, there will be no issues shooting regular shot loads through the smoothbore barrel.

.I normaly don't even fool much with shotguns, but we got a new generator, and I advertised our old one for $200,and the guy called last nite and asked if I would trade for it and two boxes of saboted slugs..I told him I would if it has iron sights, and he said it did..He is suspossed to get back with me in the morning.

Sounds like a great deal if the gun's in decent shape. If you don't wanna mess with the rifled barrel & sabots you could easily pick up a 20 ga. smoothbore barrel for it. I just checked Midway USA and they have 20 ga. barrels for Mossberg 500's and even have one that's a smoothbore with rifle sights and cylinder bore. It's product # 825492 or check around at gun shows. I usually see a couple tables at every show with a lot of shotgun barrels and quite a few are for Mossbergs because there's also quite a few Mossberg 500's around. I even have a Mossberg 500 12 ga. turkey gun and It's very nice.

..The nickname of Mossberg shotguns around here is "rattleberg",but they are probably no noisier than most other brands, there's just more of them..I thought it was a pretty good sounding deal..He said it is camo, and dosn't have a scratch on it..

A Mossberg rifled barrel will shoot both sabot and forester type slugs.

The Winchester forester slug groups were 8" at 100 yards. Sabots were around 4" . Scoped canalever 12 ga Mossberg.

Shot shells would produce large patterns, my guess.

New Mossbergs can be bought for as little as $290. A 2 barrel combo, a little more.

For a truck gun, I think you're better off with a smoothbore. Like has been mentioned, shot won't hurt a rifled barrel but it'll really limit your range and probably dirty the barrel up. And you can shoot rifled slugs through one too, but you won't get any accuracy advantage.

If you trade for the gun, I'd try to trade the barrel for either a smoothbore vent-rib barrel or a smoothbore short barrel with iron sights.

I probably won't be getting it anyways because the guy was suspposed to call early this morning, and never did..

Shot shells would produce patterns with large holes. The shot string out of a rifled barrel flies in a spiral(just like shot out of a hand gun) sending the shot all over creation. Slugs out of a smooth bore, can produce 3" or so groups at 100 yards with iron sights.
Anyway, not having irons really shouldn't be a deal breaker if the price is right and the shotgun is in decent condition. Extra barrels for Mossbergs, even 20 gauge, aren't horribly expensive or rare.
