I am looking for a hard-sided case for my flintlock rifle. My rifle is almost 60" long, and I need something tough enough to survive the airlines. I have found one at Crazy Crow Trading Post, but don't like to buy without shopping, which means I would like to see at least one other source.

Any suggestions (short of building it myself of wood)?

Maybe pad the rifle well and put it in a PVC pipe with appropriate locking caps on the ends.

It would not be elegant but it should offer protection, be relatively lightweight, and not look like a gun case to a thief.

If you can build your own from wood then do it. How sweet would that be to have a case that matches your rifle?

This is what I have in mind to do with my rifle after I purchase a few extra barrels for it. I fancy it being versatile like a T/C Contender.

I forgot who made it, but there is a stainless steel case that will take a long rifle.

Can you separate the barrel from the stock? Allowing you to use a shorter case?

Check out shipping containers made for rod and reels. My sons flew in and out of Florida with fishing gear in expandable cases. Given the thinner cross section of long rifles a case could be adapted. A quick Google image search showed dozens of models.

I'd never entrust any wooden case to the gentle ministrations of the airline baggage handlers. They even refer to themselves as "handle rippers."

Plywood with reinforced corners might suffice but its not going to be pretty very long.

My twin brother shoots a lot of looooong BP rifles and fowlers..........

He's looking at one of these expandable hard cases -- that were designed for snow boards or skis -- that extend all the way up to 83" in length:

Special Edition Sportube - Hard Ski & Snowboard Cases

Just keep in mind the extra weight of a long gun will enable it to move/shift more easily than a light fishing rod would, so strong foam pieces placed around it will be needed -- and more effective than bubble wrap. And you'll want a good way to secure the extension piece.

Best part is -- it won't look like a gun once it's packed away!

If you're flying with it, it can't be wood or home made. It's gotta be a TSA approved product.

Personally, I've had bad experiences with TSA and guns, so these days i'll just send it to myself a week in advance.
