You don't know - do ya?
I'm starting a gradual upgrade of my DPMS LR-308, beginning with a Magpul PRS1 Stock. What type of Buffer tube and/or spring should I replace to compliment the new stock?

Good evening,

I don't know the current state of your LR-308 because there are many configurations. However, if you currently have a rifle stock and receiver extension, you don't need to do anything. If you currently have a carbine receiver extension, you'll need to replace it with a rifle extension, spring, and buffer assembly. The JP silent buffer assembly is a proprietary buffer and spring assembly that has a small diameter spring that doesn't slide against the inside of the receiver extension so you don't get the typical "staple gun" sound when the action cycles. No need for a fancy setup like that, I'd just stick with the standard rifle assembly.

^^Have to agree. A quality, light, drop in can make a “so so” AR, a great AR. And what are your goals? More accuracy (consistency)? Better ergonomics? Better long range capabilities? Wanting to shoot heavy for caliber bullets? Are you trying to quiet the metallic “boing” sound when your rifle cycles?

IMHO... depending on your impression of the LR-308 recoil and function... I have in my PSA PA10 GenII ... an adjustable gas block, a PRS III , a Tubbs .308 Flatwire recoil spring and a KAK .308 Rifle length 9.3oz buffer ( shorter then AR15 rifle length buffers ! )... it shoots very softly and I can easily stay on target at the bench.

If your .308 cycles aggressively in its current form... those things will dramatically change( for the better ) its persona.

Sorry for not getting back to all who responded a little sooner. All of your suggestions/questions got me thinking and I took my "out of the box" DPMS Panther Arms LR308 (with telescoping buttstock) to an excellent Gunsmith not far from my house. He did recommend the MagPul PRS1 Stock, the JP silent capture Spring with a full length tube - (thanks farmerboy78") The trigger issue - he's going to replace some springs, polish and tune the existing one - if that doesn't do the trick in terms of crisp breaking - we'll try one of the drop-ins. I'm hoping these changes plus new scope (considering a Millet LRS-1) if I can get price knocked down to around $400 - I should be set to reach out at longer ranges with more consistency. Again, thanks for the thoughts and suggestions.

My likes are ultra slim hand guards, Geissele Super Semi-Automatic Enhanced (SSA-E) Trigger and Leupold optics.
I built this 308 a few months back.

Oops, you're going in the exact wrong direction, if you ask me (and you did ask me in a roundabout way). Too heavy. The starting point to improve such a rifle is to make it lighter. Get an MOE-SL stock (or lighter one), a carbon fiber handguard, and a lightweight sight (think micro Aimpoint or really light scope like a Trijicon Accupoint or Leupold VX-1 / VX-Hog 1-4x20). If possible, get a Christensen or Proof CF barrel to really lighten it up. Have your lower receiver sent out for lightening cuts. Leave most of the doodads off of it. Forgot about BUIS - you'll never need them if you have a quality scope and rings. Oh, and get either a Rainer Raptor or BCM gunfighter charging handle and an Ergo brand "Suregrip". Just my take. I tried to make an AR10 my "just one" rifle including hunting, but it was too heavy, and making it light *enough* was going to cost more than I wanted to spend. Oh and get an Echo trigger before they're banned - that's what I plan to do.

Thanks Danny, I appreciate your input and will definitely do some price comparisons and go from there. Wish I could win even the Pick 5 lotto here in NC...50k would go a long ways in customizing the hell out of my rifles! Anyway, again, thanks for taking time to respond!

Nice setup! Bet it's a tack driver with that longer barrel! Thanks for taking the time to respond - I do appreciate it!

The nice thing about having options is that right or wrong is in the eye of the beholder. For many a light weight option is the right answer but for others that isn't the only priority. If that was the case, AR rifle stocks wouldn't exist. Personally for me it was balancing portability with other comfort factors. I like the balance I get with a tapered medium profile barrel and a rifle stick. It shifts the center of balance rearward which is comfortable to me. My loaded 308 AR is dressed out right at about 9 lbs which is really not much different than a dressed out middle of the road Winchester model 70 or equivalent hunting rifle. I know many feel like you need featherweight rifle to hunt with but if you have decent upper body strength you should easily be able to hump an average weight hunting rifle.
