I was shooting today, and I think I have finally worn out 2 Wilson 47D magazines. They are about 15 years old. Neither of these 2 can reliably hold back the slide after the last cartridge is fired on several different 1911s. They feed fine and still cycle well.

What causes a mag to fail to hold back the slide? Wear on the nylon follower? or wear on metal?

Mag springs do eventually wear out. Lots of threads on THR about that and about what causes (or doesn't cause) that to happen faster or slower.

It's actually pretty nice when they give you a sign that they're getting old by not locking back mags... sometimes they just stop feeding reliably!

I have a couple of Korean War era 1911 mags...short of replacing springs...STILL working fine. LOOK like hell, but still fine.
