2017 hunting picture thread

Whacked this 9 pointer (should have been 10, but his left main beam tip was broken off). He came in and worked a scrape about 15 yards from me. Ended up putting an arrow in him at about 6 yards. His left G2 measured 14", right G3 was 12".

Very nice buck Charlie , he really has some mass . Y'all grow um big in Kansas .

Don't put my picture next to Charlie's , but I got in the game today with this 145 lb. 7 point with my muzzleloader . Where I hunt they don't get much bigger than this because they shoot every thing they see . I usually don't shoot them smaller than this . I shot him with in 30 min. of climbing the tree . He came in on my track , surprised me , but they are in the rut . My soap and detergent must be working , LOL .

What makes this deer special is , I missed all of last deer season because of rotator cuff surgery and my dad died 2 months later . He always was so happy when I got a deer , he was so proud of me . I asked him for his help finding this deer while I was looking for the blood trail and he came through . His birthday was yesterday , I miss him so much . This was the first time that I could not share it with him . I am so glad that I can do this again , I started off a little rusty . I dragged this deer about 300 yards out of the woods and my shoulder feels fine . I could not have done this in June 17 and my surgery was Oct. 16 .

One year the game wardens came in at the end of the season and shot truck loads of deer at night to cut down the population in that area . Now the deer are not as big and we do not kill the numbers that we use too .

When I look at those Kansas bucks it makes me not want to deer hunt at my club , no offense Charlie , I am happy for you .

Ok Sunday l walked up on a small group (that I could see). Had what looked like a decent pig step out. Long story short, it was a big boar. And he had a really tough “shield”. Over 3” thick. Has to go 300lbs. Shot him in the shoulder at about 70 yards. 350gr Hornady RN over 51gr H-4198. Hit just behind the shoulder, bullet exited out the neck. No recovery on the bullet. I’d say about 16” from entrance to exit. After about a minute and a half the damn thing tried to get up. He then received a 180gr Nosler sporting hollow point over 11gr BlueDot from my 10mm to some major artery or possibly the heart. He spewed a pinky sized diameter of blood for over a minute before finally ceasing to be alive.

Edit: He was 6’4” from nose to tail, 28”-29” tall and laying on his side was 20 inches thick. Someone may be able to guestimate what he weighed. But I know he bent my deer dolly that’s rated to 300lbs.

Excellent eating. Very tender. I like antlers as much as the next guy, but I'll take what I can get with limited time in the stand.

Cohutta Wilderness opening day 2017, great scenery but no game!

Today was the gun opener and I only saw 6 does; and that's counting the two I saw crossing the road on my way over to my friends place in the pre-dawn darkness. The other 4 I spotted from my ladder stand waaay out in the field beyond 12 ga. sabot slug range ( I was in a shotgun zone) and they never got any closer. Although about 8 a.m. I had 2 racoons climb a tree near my stand and settle into a crotch of the tree, stared at me for about an hour and then figured out that I wasn't hunting them and they both curled up there and were still sleeping up there just after 4: 30 when I left. Here's a shot of the field where the does were out of range and my "neighbors" for the day on the opposite side of me. Perhaps one of these days a deer will wander by. (within range)

All of these pics and posts are getting me antsy. Its still bow season here, and the rut doesn't really kick in until Dec-Jan. Our gun season ends in Feb. The deer are still mostly nocturnal- very few daytime pics on the cameras. Every time I sit in the stand I end up watching squirrels eat the corn for a few hours.

This basket 8 ran by me this morning chasing a doe. Stopped about 100 yds in field and spent 20-30 minutes trying to find here again!

That, my friend, is a Dandy. Don't think that I could get him on my little 250cc Beartracker.

Can't let Kansas get all the glory. Here is a friend's take last weekend in Arkansas. His family came in this is the results. Prime example of what the 3 point rule and proper habitat management can do. These were take off of approximately 500 acres.

WOWZERS! I'm just praying daily that I have the option to attach my release to my bow! Man, that sure would be nice to be able to see deer so easily!

Arkansas sure produces some nice deer.

your bear-tracker will do fine, I also have a 500 Polaris but I like the bear-tracker better for deep woods hunting. smaller and lighter and gets into some realy tight spots with ease. eastbank.

I shot a big buck with my bow about 100 yards from the truck. Caught one lung and, of course, he went 200-250 yards into deep hollow. I rode bushes down with the little Yamaha and had to lift it up to turn it around in the brush. Loaded my deer and rode back up a steep hill with buck on the back. I knew that if I took him off the ATV that I couldn't lift him onto the truck bed so I crawled up on the handlebars and rode the whole rig up the ramps and onto the truck. Possibly the dumbest thing that I have ever done. I was 30 miles from home, no cell service and no one knew where I was. If I had flipped the Yamaha I would still be there. I don't do that stupid stuff anymore. Takes too long to heal.

After 4 days in deer stands and pit blinds, without seeing a single deer, I final saw a little doe today at 1st light. Was the 1st one taken on our new parcel and my Ole Stubby 303 nailed her DRT. Little but good eating for sure. That said, I still have 4 more doe and 1 buck tag to fill! Finally broke the ice.
