Recommend a 9mm or .22LR range pistol?

You live in TX and never heard of a BBQ gun?

I did see the mk lite. I think the mk's and the BM are close (for me).
I'm hearing the Ruger is more difficult to take down? Although the IV is said to be a simple button, and the BM needs an Allen wrench or two..
With those minor things in mind, I think price will be the tie breaker between these. Ruger around $400 all day, Browning on sale @ $219.....

Yes, the MK IV breaks down with the push of a button. The I, II, and III guns are not difficult once you understand how they work. The correct angle of the dangle of the hammer strut is the magical secret in putting one back together.

One of my favorite 9mm plinkers is my Star Super B. It feels a lot like a 1911. They were selling them for not much more than $200 a few years ago. It is a quality steel pistol. As you could imagine, in a full-sized steel pistol like that, the recoil is pretty much nil. Mine is so accurate and fun to shoot that my FiL ordered one for himself the same day that he shot it for the first time. I still see them for sale every now and again.

I just got one of these, too, about a month or so ago. I don't think mine (made in 1973, I think?) was ever even issued; it's in such good shape. I haven't gotten it to the range yet, though, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm not even a 1911-guy, and this feels really nice in hand.

Well, I totally blew my wad at Bass pro this morning. Got there early, me and the boy (20 months old). Brought the dyd player, power supply started smoking with in two minutes. Everyone got out of their cars an hour before open, standing out in 30 degree weather. Nice guys held my place in line and let us go back to the warm car. Got our number at the door. Fifth in line at the gun counter. Still stood there for over an hour (because everyone's paper work). Kid was not happy.
So...
I bought two Browning buckmark campers w/ sequencial (sp?) S/N's. After rebates, tax and what all, paid about $215 each all said and done. Pick them up next week.
That's enough holiday shopping for me!

With .22LR being widely available and cheap again I've decided to also look for a good rimfire pistol. Nobody has mentioned it yet but my search has brought me to the S&W M&P-22 Compact.

There used to be a full-size M&P rimfire pistol made by Umarex with the typical Umarex quality. But S&W started making their own rimfire M&P in-house and it's scaled-down a bit from the full-size M&Ps so they called it the Compact. It's reportedly of much higher quality and QC than anything Umarex was making. I've held one and it feels great in the hands.

Sounds like a very successful shopping trip! Like the two Buckmarks with sequential serial numbers; pretty cool!

Took one to the range. Its really nice. I don't think I've ever gotten such nice groups. Fed it all types of ammo with no problems.
The other one is tucked away in its original package at the bottom of the safe... Couple years I'll probably give it to the kid. That's the current plan anyhow

Your son will learn much better shooting fundamentals much easier/faster with that Buckmark! They're great guns.

Looking for a good full size pistol for fun at the range. I'd like 9mm because it's cheap enough to shoot. I suppose I could consider a .22lr, can't get cheaper to shoot than that!
I don't plan to carry this so size/weight aren't an issue (as they relate to ccw anyway)
I'm mostly looking at the Beretta 92.

Any thoughts?

If you just want to have fun at the range, pick any of the good 22 LR target pistol from the major manufacturers.

Now made in USA SIG 210 target pistol. The one I seen was $1500. This is significantly less than German or original Swiss versions.

Well done! I arrived at the thread too late to be the 8th person recommending the CZ 9mm/.22 combo, but I think that the pair you purchased will serve you and your son well for the intended purpose, and was a much cheaper unit price than you could've paid for even a used CZ. I admit I've never shot a Buckmark, but their takedown HAS to be more intuitive than the darned Ruger Mark series... as one previous poster wrote, those things are like a Rubik's cube!

Since you mention 9mm and/or .22lr, I'd like to direct you to various conversion kits availabe. Not the least expensive route to take, but a simple upper swap is all it takes. I have a G19 and an Advantage Arms .22lr conversion kit (now around $300). I like the fact I get the same trigger pull between the two calibers.

I second a CZ-75 variant (metal framed) with the excellent Kadet Kit .22 conversion. There is a conversion for the Beretta 92, but it isn't nearly as good as the CZ.

Best of both worlds - RIA full size 1911 in 9mm and an Advantage Arms .22 cal conversion kit. The AA kit locks open on the last round whereas other conversion kits do not. The RI will help to keep the cost down. Remington GB's are recommended and work perfectly

If you want to 'break the bank' you can go S & W 41, Ruger Gov't and High Standard:

M&P 22 is a fun gun, especially if you have kids that like to shoot.

I came in late to this party, so I was pretty concerned when I saw this:

I actually liked that new Beretta neos,

But I was really glad to continue reading and see this:

I bought two Browning buckmark campers

Not that the NEOS U22 is necessarily a bad pistol, but they're not without faults. I've worked on several of them over the years, they all need tweaking to reliably feed, and the cocking mechanism will forever and always be a functional liability for them. The grip neck is remarkably small, even if you can get past the retro space gun aesthetic, so folks with large hands tends to have trouble closing down on them. The frame mounted safety is backwards, akin to a slide mounted safety, and its shape is ridiculous for its location - I've had multiple owners (myself included) request the selector body be dressed down so it no longer gouges the web of the hand when firing, as there's a sharp corner on the selector body which interferes against the shooters thumb knuckle and base of the index finger when a proper high grip is taken. Shooting lefty, it's also very unfortunate the tip of my right thumb also lands EXACTLY in the pocket of the mag release, and I have inadvertently dropped the mag while firing - or rather partially released, since they don't drop freely - on multiple occasions over the years. The cocking serrations on the slide are nice, but the rear sight and rail are a bit wide, and aesthetically pleasing inlet in the top of the side of the slide offers very little real estate to operate the slide - almost impossible to do anything but slingshot (not great for an over-the-top racker like me), and that cocking design requires a lot of force, so it's a double whammy there, poor grip purchase and excessive force required. If they'd simply aborted the groove at the top of the slide in the last inch of the rear, there would be fantastic purchase, and the groove would even serve to increase grip, but since they carried it all the way out, it just makes the slide difficult to grip. The patridge sights are good, very tight fit of the front sight into the rear notch, and the integral pseudo weaver rail is very nice - especially being elevated to protect the sights a bit. It's really close to a decent pistol, but overall, I ONLY recommend the NEOS for right handed shooters with very small hands, a big enough pocket book to fund smithing work, a low shooting volume, and enough patience to tolerate a budget pistol which needs so much work and attention to run properly.

The Buckmark's a solid pistol. I tend to recommend in this order: Ruger Mark IV, Mark II, Buckmark, Woodsman, 22/45, Victory, Mark III, NEOS, followed by all combat style pistols like the Mosquito, SR22, P22, M&P-22, etc. (Recognizing here, the Woodsman is only so far down the list because they're all used AND recognizing the 22/45 grip and design isn't my cup of tea, but for some folks, it fits their needs or their hand better).

Thank you for the neos review. I didn't want to like it... To danged new looking! Space pistol, you got that right. But it did feel good my hand.

The buck Mark came out as a front runner for me, but the holiday pricing just couldn't be ignored. I've been having a great time with it, been to the range at least half a dozen times so far.

Hi. Beretta's are great. I did not keep the Beretta that I had, but have kept a VP9, a CZ SP01, and P07. The P07 is a great suggestion, plus you may like the legendary CZ75-B.

A CZ 75B or a Glock 17 if you’re looking to save $, A Sig P226 or an HK P30L if your budget is bigger.

And I have been having a great time shooting it. I got a monthly pass at the brand new indoor range just a few doors down from work ($35/month) so I can go anything I like. At first I went like 6 days in a row, now its every couple days or so.
Shooting .22s, even premium like CCI mini-mags, keeps things cheap. (Occasionally I'll bring another gun or two).
I'm finally able to spend time working on my shooting vs going sporadically and just throwing lead downrange.

Also, my wife may put the second pistol into service. I'm sure the boy won't mind too much;)

Sequential S/N's you say, sounds like a good father/son package! That would be cool when he gets old enough to have a close serial'd Buckmark with his dad.
