Why would I need that, drobs? We don't have such stores, but I could find stuff like that if I wanted to, which I'm almost certain that I don't want. :)

Bingo, drobs. Biljna mast :) now it's clear to me. Thanks. Can I use only that - vegetable shortening - WHY do I have to mix it with beeswax and paraffine wax? I think I can manage that mix, but why can't I just put vegetable shortening? Because if I can, that would make things so easy and cheap for me.

BP is the one I announced long ago - the higher quality and more expensive German powder:

That's good powder. I'm shooting Graf's Schuetzen which is a private label of that Wano powder.
Same thing - different label.

You can cut wads out of a 100% wool blanket.

A Yugoslavian military Beret would be a good source of wool felt as well.
Possibly and old military wool uniform coat.

These guns, all direct copies of 19th century pieces, were designed by their inventors to use powder and ball, or conicals, not, as far as I can find, wads or fillers.
I've tested all my Uberti Colts with full loads, no lube or wads, and they will function thru cylinder load after cylinder load, eight in my case. Accuracy suffers and in the end cylinder rotation is difficult, but on an 12X18 target 12 yards, the 48th shot was still in the kill zone.

Powder and ball, and in the interest of keeping fouling to manageable levels a dab of lube, liquid or solid over the chamber mouth. No fillers, no wads necessary, not saying they don't have a function, the filler, IMO is needed only in extreme reduced powder charges, they are just not necessary to an average shooter for accurate fun shooting.

A handy reference to determine if enough lube is used is to examine the muzzle after six shots. A slight ring of lube should be noticeable around the muzzle.

As already mention, these are time tested guns of a simple design requiring simple components, don't over think it.

Hm, so whughett, in your experience, what is the smallest amount of powder which is still enough for a ball to be pressed well on powder, with no wad or other fillers? If I ever decide to shoot without wads, I need to know that. 12, 13, 14, 14, 16, 17... grains?

I went to a range - it was closed. Seems that no-one knows their schedule, no info and no contact anywhere. Also seems that it's rarely opened and used. Great. I might have guessed that. If it was a private range, it would be opened 7 days a week and very expensive. Since it's public, someone gets payed for it to function, but no-one really cares if it doesn't function. That's how many things are in this part of the world. I could go to wilderness to try it out, but that's illegal. Still, I might do it tonight.

I managed to get to the person who's in charge of the local shooting club - only registered paying members of the club can use the shooting range, which is owned by the city. He told me that I can't shoot black powder. He explained that it's too loud, it bothers other shooters and people living in a houses near by complained. I asked about the other range - he told me that other range is only for clay pigeons. He told me that there were 4-5 older guys shooting black powder, but they all stopped using percussion revolvers when they were asked to stop bringing them to the range. So that's it - no legal shooting for me. I can only go far away to some hills and risk being stopped by the police, cause I can legally shoot only at the range. And in my town I'm not allowed to use the range. Maybe in some other town I can, but here where I live I can't.

Many indoor ranges have also stopped allowing black powder here too. In addition to indoor ranges near me in Cincinnati, Ohio, many others are outdoor "clubs" on farms where a bulldozed hill has been created to keep the bullets from doing any harm behind the targets. These "clubs" are often only discovered by talking to other shooters. Before giving up on black powder, see if you can find out if there are other cap and ball owners in your area and see if they have found somewhere to shoot. Have you asked around on:

Ephraim, those are German and French forums, I live far, far away from them. I'm probably one of just few persons in my town with black powder revolver - if not the only one. The president of the shooters' club who talked to me an hour ago mentioned 4-5 other gentlemen - and said they all switched to modern firearms after being denied to use the range for muzzleloaders. I guess they kept their revolvers (I don't think they had pistols or muskets - most likely revolvers) only as a display pieces; they now shoot modern guns. In a city of 180000 people I'm most likely the only one who intends to shoot cap and ball revolver. Can't compare it to the USA, this is another world here. So I have no-one to ask about anything, all I can do is try to find some good spot somewhere far where no-one ever goes. If I'm lucky, I won't bump into a police patrol, a bear, a pack of hungry wolves or end up in a minefield... or be shot by some trigger-happy short-sighted hunter.
Thanks for everything everyone.

1861, I am so sorry that after all you have gone thru to find out you can not use the ranges near to where you live. I can't understand the thinking of people that believe black powder is louder than smokeless powder. I think it is just the opposite except for 22 rimfire.
When I was a soldier stationed in West Germany I wanted to shoot as a recreation but where I was stationed it was a very small instillation and I would have to join a local club and follow German law. It was too much of a burden so I gave up.
I do hope that you are able to find a range close to where you live and can finally shoot your cap and ball revolver.
Good Luck my Friend.
.

1861, I am sorry to hear that also. You have endeavored to ask the right questions of all of us here, and this has been a very entertaining thread. I think we all have learned something in the last 568 posts.

Don't give up. Some glimmer of hope will show up when you least expect it.

Persevere, take care, and don't get eaten by a bear!

Jim

As you mentioned earlier, there are many different ways to do this.

I started out making sure to use enough powder to eliminate air space, seated the balls over the powder, and then applied enough Shortening (Crisco for me, Biljna mast for you) to fill the remaining cylinder space.

Today I cut back on the powder, use a factory lubed wad (I am too lazy to make my own), and seat the ball without any additional lube.

Who knows, I might decide to do it a different way tomorrow.

One thing has remained constant. This is just about as much fun as you can get while keeping your clothes on, no matter what "formula" I have been using.

Thanks guys.
BullSlinger - there are no other ranges. Other ranges are probably a few hundred kilometers away.
Since the range is public property, owned by the city, I sent a long email to a city official who's in charge of it, explaing the situation and my problem. The president of the shooting club said that I can't, but he's not the owner of the range, the city is the owner, and I am citizen, so I should have equal possibilities as other citizens, and other citizens shoot their guns there.
When I get reply, I'll let you know it. Possibly on Monday, but who knows.

I could go to wilderness to try it out, but that's illegal. Still, I might do it tonight.
Do it. Im not for advocating illegal behavior but after all you've been through? You've earned it. If the cops show up just tell them your car backfired...six times..

Tonight I stayed home, I felt too tired. But tomorrow most likely.
I don't have a car - that's a major flaw in my plan to go to wilderness. I'll have to go with some friend. Luckily, one of my friends is dying to try it out, so I'll have a ride - but not whenever I feel like it.

Once your friend tries it out, you'll have a ride whenever you choose. Not trying to hype up shooting too much, but it really is fun and addicting. Post some range pics when you go out. We've all been waiting a long time! ;)

1861, my friend, you really need to become an American citizen in Arizona, Texas, Wyoming, Montana, Missouri, Arkansas. You already speak English...the rest is easy!

Come on over!

:)
